Yep, it's not an easy one.
I'm going away tomorrow with two male colleagues, who I don't even know very well, to a beach and I don't want them to realise I'm mildly UV paranoid and totally skin obsessed.
Neither of them use sunscreen at all, I'm sure. I've got to transport a stack of anti-oxidants and 3 or 4 varieties of SS not to mention the peripherals like my umbrella - need to pick up a new hat. Actually, they already laugh at my umbrella, but assume it's because I'm 'an English rose'(which says a lot in a positive sense for the way my skin must look) and sensitive to the sun. That always makes me laugh inside because I tan really easily and darkly and get a load of hyperpigmentation.
It's going to be hilarious. Do you think they'll notice |

Molly, they'll have absolutely no idea what is it exactly what you're putting on your skin (most probably they have never heard about antioxidants yet) - so they will be even more consolidated in their opinion that you are one of the real Eglish roses (and you should be prepared that they're going to be completely crazy about you after this trip !)
Have a nice trip & enjoy !

Decant your lotions and potions into little pots that you can easily hide in a handbag or beachbag to take with you.
Or you can always pretend that you're an English Eccentric as well as an English Rose. We're supposed to be completely potty and do ridiculous things, so they'll think you're just behaving "normally". (I do this all the time. It's surprisingly easy to get away with. ) |

| Eccentric's a good idea and usually easy to pull off, except I forgot to mention one of my colleagues is from the UK too. He thinks the umbrella's weird, the other's Australian and he assumes it's my Englishness. |

Molly, slather away! Boys don't understand the complexities of the female psyche, anyway. Anything else you do to confound them will only be taken as the norm.
Remember, they are fantastically wonderful creatures but my goodness, you can't imagine they might actually UNDERSTAND you!
Brollie - check
Antioxidants - check
Loads of SS - check
Female to Male Dictionary - ?
Have fun! I love my boyfriends. |

I like majorb's suggestion of putting your potions in little pots. They won't take up much room and nobody really knows what you are putting on. I once went on a month's long camping trip with a bunch of Russians and Americans in Russia. The Americans that went were environmentalists that had nice simple routines. Me, I'm a skincare junkie so I had to find a way to hide my routine from everyone (didn't want to appear vain!) but stay on it so that my skin didn't deteriorate. I've gone on other trips where it was similar. I try to pare everything down and put them in smaller containers so they don't take up much room. I also go hide somewhere so that I can put everything on in private as much as possible.
I was so relieved when I found this forum and finally found people who also do things like this. I thought I was the only one! |

I know Ellyp - isn't it great to know you're not the only one.
I already have the mini-pots because I travel for work and you just can't let it all go, can you But my procedures am and pm are a little elaborate especially if I'm facing a big UV day. Hotel's are fine because you can secretly do all your procedures, but staying with people is a bit of a nightmare. It's like having to hide away a secret vice they must wonder what I'm up to. |

Just tell them you're sensitive to the sun...that your skin sometimes reacts in upredictable ways so you have to be careful. |

I try to hide my makeup bag so people (usu. family) won't see it! When you look at me, I don't necessarily look high maintenance either. If only they knew.... |

Me too - I'm a very 'natural' looking person . In fact I don't use make-up anyway - that would certainly extend my day.
Only my family knows how obsessive I am and it really gets on their nerves when we're on holiday together. I need a 2 hour lead time before I go to the beach. Anything less is unreasonable. |

On a positive note, he now encourages me to open a spa in a few years time when we have one more kid up and in the school already which will be say 5 years from now....hehe Not only did he give up, he has accepted this as a part of life |

Okay, so you can always say you're an English Eccentric who needs to have extreme sun protection because sun exposure provokes a terrible psychological reaction which makes you kick men in the goolies. They won't dare to say anything just in case it's true. |

Oh That is funny !
I thought that I was the only one who hid my skin obsession. Only the very few nearest and dearest to me know my dark secret which is why I have to come here and indulge my seedy passion! I really would be quite embarrased if my male work mates knew how much I spend on trying to get nice skin! |

MA Crisis, I actually like myself the way I am! (and I think men do too).
Thanks MajorB, I like the idea of kicking men in the goolies any day of the week.
So how did it go? I don't think I pulled it off terribly well - my vice is out, though it didn't disturb proceedings. I had to transfer my anti-oxidants to a restaurant fridge because my room had a corrugated tin roof - this kind of gave the game away from the start and I had constant knocks on the door during vital skin routine procedures which didn't help. I was compared to a younger version of Helen Mirren though, so a little bit wrinkled, but extremely sexy.
Finally, I was in my element; beautiful, natural, remote beaches along with swimming and hiking, listening to the waves, collecting shells and stones had always been my thing until I became so skin focused and I was tempted to ditch all the skin paranoia stuff and stay forever. I'm still thinking about it. I'd have to give up the acids and the retinoids, but it might be worth it for the happiness and health. I feel great all over |

Molly, sounds like you had a fabulous time! So happy for you - where'd you go, by the way? I'm intrigued.
As for giving up the skin care in lieu of stone investigations, I can surely see your point. Perhaps, a wide-brimmed perma-hat for those possible future endeavors. |

I'd love to tell you where I went, but I'm not very familiar with Cantonese, my guidebook doesn't say and I've forgotten already.
Broadly speaking, I was in a national park/nature reserve in Western Kowloon which is the northern half of Hong Kong. There are no cars allowed so you have to lug your stuff over the hills by foot. It's got three classic golden beaches with surf-style waves and just a bit of basic accommodation in one tiny village, all of which accounts for the lovely, remoteness of it. |

| I've always thought so too Sharky and I've noticed you're a bit of a beach lover in past threads. What I really don't understand is how you can combine acids (I notice you use 40% glycolic regularly) and a love for the beach. For me that's flirting with danger. The sun feels badly stinging on my face despite SS if I use acids or retinoids even gentle ones. How do you manage it? |

Wow, that's quite a compliment! I would certainly not mind being compared to Helen Mirren.
Just this week I saw some pics of HM at the gofugyourself website and she's looking fabulous, as always. |
