I have dry (mature) skin and am working on an effective anti-aging routine. I have read a lot of stuff but am still feeling confused about which type of products to include.
Should I include retinol and AHAs or do they do the same thing and I only need one of these? If both, how do you do that so your skin doesn't get too dry or irritated.
Thanks. |

Have a look in this thread:

It'll give you some background on what these products do. That should give you some food for thought to then do a few searches. I'm suggesting that because it's a good way to "get your head around" it all. Atleast it really helped me.
Once you understand them more, you can then discuss a routine on how to introduce them! |

Hi Marie1120 - I use both (alternate use at bedtime), and the products I use are milder versions. IS Clinical Firming Complex contains 5% AHA. And I use Avene Ystheal Emulsion for face and Contour des Yeux for eyes and lips. These are fairly mild and contain retinaldehyde (retinoid). Using AHAs helps to quickly exfoliate the skin, and some believe this helps other actives penetrate better, so something like a retinoid can be more effective. I also use PSF Pumpkin Enzyme peel/mask no more than once a week to very quickly remove crusty skin.
IF you're uncertain, you may want to start out with some milder products like these. I can't handle the strong stuff on a regular basis. If your skin is tougher, then maybe stronger products are for you.
But as you suspect, these are drying. I follow up with a Vit.C serum in the AM (SkinCeuticals CE+Ferulic), and also use an oily sunscreen containing Tinosorb (Avene SPF50+ Emulsion), though I've just decided to try another one, Bioderma Fluide SPF50+ which is slightly less oily. You really need to use effective sunscreen if you decide to use AHAs and retinoids since your skin will be much more vulnerable to photo-damage. |

Thank you for sharing your routine. I ordered the Avene Ystheal - hope I ordered the right stuff. I have a trial of the SC CEF but it seems too strong. I just bought the Skin Medica Vit C so will try that alternating with the SC vit C and see if that works better to adjust. Otherwise I wil stick with the Skin Medica C for now.
Alternating the retinol and AHAs sounds like a good way to try incorporating both.
The Pumpkin Mask sounds good!!!!
Do I need a product with sunscreen if my foundation has sunscreen? For the next few months I won't be out long enough to be concerned with sunscreen. I live in Wisconsin and outside time is very limited. |
