In my zest to try way too many new actives back in August, I managed to upset my skin--including having some raw spots on both cheeks from treatment with too much AHA/BHA. I also have two dark spots on my forehead from two bumps that came up when I was "purging." These never turned into full-blown pimples, but instead flattened and became dark. Usually, even with a small insect bite or other small abrasion on my skin, I get a dark spot that takes months to go away. It DOES eventually go away on its own, and I think the discolorations on my face will fade in a few months, BUT...what would be the best products to expedite this?

I have a kojic acid/wildberry serum from Garden of Wisdom and am applying this along with a high PPD sunscreen. Are there other products that would complement this? A vitamin C product, perhaps? Vitamin E? I will be grateful for advice.

I think what you're doing already is good.

You're right, adding a Vit C product should help fade it faster or a combo Vit C&E serum. I don't like to recommend one in particular because I haven't tried that many of them and I'm not sure what your skin type is.

It would also be a good idea to go back to using an AHA occasionally to speed up the skin's turnover or use a microdermabrasion scrub, Epidermx for example.

Good luck with it - Molly Cool

Thanks Molly!

My skin (before I started trying so many different products) was combination: oily T zone, normal skin elsewhere; only occasional blemishes (usually hormonal). The AHA/BHA dried the skin outside of my cheeks while at the same time causing my pores to become visibly blocked so I think that in general I was over-drying my skin. Stopping the AHA/BHAs temporarily has helped my skin calm down. I would like to slowly add back AHA/BHA, but will be CAUTIOUS due to what happened before.

The C will definitely help. You might also consider a product with azelaic acid like acnederm. Azelaic acid is very good at specifically removing the hyperpigmentation left behind by acne. Other lighteners include hydroquinone, kojic acid and licorice extract but they are more for treating age spots/melasma than for PIH (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.)

There is a skincare system by Skin Doctors called Potent C. I've been using this after hearing rave reviews about it on another forum for helping with hyperpigmentation. The system contains a three month supply of vitamin c serums, day cream, night cream and eye gel. My skin tone has really improved.
