Am I the only person who finds the thought of using emu oil for skincare reasons disturbing..?!
Just curious.
(No I am not a vegetarian and I do wear leather shoes). |

No you're not. Theres no evidence that emu oil benefits skin. Its just an emollient. Theres lots of other emollients I would rather put on my skin such as shea butter for example. I pity the poor emu bird. |

Why pity the poor emu bird, if it's being used for other things such as its meat? I personally do not find it bothersome or wrong, if an animal is used for a variety of reasons (cow, lamb, etc.) - unlike a mink, for example, which I think is cruel and unnecessary.
I happen to use emu oil and do understand that some people find its use disturbing but that is a personal choice; however, it does work for me as an anti-inflammatory and also is very healing.
I use a lot of actives/exfoliants and with Ultra Emu from LB Processors, my skin is calm and soft in the morning so I know it works. There are many others who experience the same thing and I don't believe it is a placebo effect or simply emollient but this is my experience and opinion. |

Well, you do have a point with the meat Scalawaggirl. Do know that there are other emollients good for skin as well. And THEY aren't necessarily good for skin either. There is no proof that any one ingredient is good for skin. I think emu oil's reputation is driven mostly by cosmetic company claims and not by any real proof that its good for skin. |

Oh good I am glad I am not the only one. I guess it seems odd to me as we don't really have emu meat over here, not exactly something you trip over at the supermarket. I suppose if it's eaten a lot, then it's just like lanolin or something. The only use I have heard of for emus is skincare on the EDS forums (and it took me a while to realise it was from emus!).
Now snakes, if I see a pretty one I think 'you'd make a nice pair of shoes' It's just oil from a bird just for skincare just seemed a bit creepy. I was imagining an emu with a tap in its side! Yeah I know that sounds mad but think of foie gras methods. |
