I am very baffled right now. I wore spf30 during summer time. and since now the weather is getting cooler, I want to eliminate the suncreen step and use a moistrizer with good spf. I was browsing the mall last weekend, and was told by a SA that I should wear a high spf at all times cus even light from light bulbs could harm the skin. and when I asked how high should I go, she told me at least spf50. I was very confused!!
is that really necessary? |

I think Spf 50 is too high, unless you have super reactive skin. I only wear spf 15 most of the time. My mother doesn't wear sunscreen at all, she just avoid too much sun, her skin is very good considering she is 50 now. |

I'll be wearing spf 55. My take is too much is never a bad thing when it comes ss. Is it really hurting you to put a higher spf on, probably not. I just like to take the extra precaution. |

i just learnt that putting on sunscreen in the morning is not enuf - my derm found hyperpigmentation altho i never ever stay in the sun for long, so i've just ordered a powder sunscreen (colorescience sunforgettable) to reapply sunscreen on top of makeup |

Wow, I didn't even know they made such a thing! That sounds like something I'd be very interested in! I've known the one time application wasn't enough to protect all day, but had no clue what to do, with makeup on... I'll have to check into this.. Let us know what you think of it.. Anyone else already using this?
Living in Colorado, we have sun well over 200 days a year, and being so high up, adds that more to sun damage factor.. ANd if you're out with snow, the reflection will get'cah good! Even cloudy days you need protection, more so in fact... No matter what season, you need as much protection as you can get, IMO, anywhere... |

Carmen, the difference between spf 50 and spf 15 may seem small but the cumulative effects are quite huge. i would personally never wear sunscreen under an spf 30. UVA rays are the same strength all year round, all day long, so i wear an spf 50 PA+++ and avoid the sun as much as i can. |

That's what I used to wear thinking it was adequate ss. I'm starting late on my ss regime, but will not be going back to moisturizers with ss in them. They're just not adequate and from my understanding, the ss protection may be diminished by other ingredients in the moisturizer. |

I wear either SPF 15 or 30, plus I wear MMU, which helps a bit. |

Is there ss built into MMU's? I was unaware of this if it is. |

Hi aries,
yes MMU has a natural sunscreen since it is composed of either crushed titanium dioxide or zinc oxide or some other oxides which are natural ss. i have heard that two dusting offers an spf 20. a lot of MMU companies have not tested the strength of UV filter in their MMU but claim "some" protection. I don't think the protection is sufficient and some members say you need to apply a lot more than just two dustings to get the best protection. |

i am weary of combining sunscreens on top of another ss because certain ones can degrade each other. i know that some chemical and physical sunscreens degrade each other. |

Then I have a question, that one powder ss thats mentioned in the other thread, if used will that degrade the ss that you apply before you makeup routine? |

Spf 60, I'm in the sun for about 5 minutes per day, but I work under fluorescent lights. Even if I didn't, even if I was only exposed for 5 minutes per day, I'd still go for the highest protection possible simply because I'm OCD about the sun (I will turn down 'fun in the sun' with family and friends ) because I do not at all, want anymore sun damage. |

dealated,
What ss are you currently using if I may ask. I'm seriously becoming one of the ss junk freaks. My b/f thinks I'm nuts when I try to cover myself up completely from sun exposure |

I have been using La Roche Posay Hydraphrase UV 30 for about a year. It is marketed as a moisturizer. This is considered a stable SS due to the mexoryl sx and available in Canadian drug stores such as SDM. IIRC about $31.00.
I am oily, sensitive, acne prone and 45. I apply this all over my face, neck and eye area. I do apply a little moisturizer on my neck and an eye cream in the under eye area first then SS. I wait 20 minutes or so then apply my MMU. MMU does have a LITTLE spf protection due to the zinc oxide; titanium dioxide but I apply such a light dusting as it is very pigmented.
My second choice for SS is Clinique City Block spf 40. Zinc Oxide is first active ingredient 8.8%; also has by Titanium Dioxide 6.6%. This one is more matt and is advertised as oil free and fragrance free. It has a slight tint (no white cast or greasy look). This is $21.00 cdn. I plan on buying another tube (and something else from Clinique) during the GWP at Sears Canada at the end of this month.
I think it is really important to wear SS everyday. It is hard to find one you like but worth the search. |

techically, there is no higher spf than 50. all the higher spfs don't actually offer anymore protection from uv rays, but it actually extends the time you can go out in the sun without reapplication. sunkiller and sunplay have sunscreens labeled spf 100, but it offers the same protection as spf 50, just you won't need to apply as often. |

I didn't realize indoor lights could damage your skin! Is this a well known thing?... have I been living under a rock (albeit out of the sun ) or somethin'? |

Me too. The last couple of years I've become more proactive in protecting my skin...I guess I'm trying to make up for years of sun damage with outdoor sports. This past summer I didn't get a tanned AT ALL and every time I went out into the sun I made sure I had something covering my skin and face as much as possible. My mom said she's not used to seeing me so un-tanned.
I so much as see another person basking in the sun and all but cringe. It's such a weird rxn I've developed. For instance this summer, at our vacation home, when I saw my adult neighbor playing outside with his shirt off it appeared he never applied sunscreen b/c he was almost a lobster. I nearly hollered out the window at him (but my shyness restrained me). |

It might. It really depends on the ingredients on your ss. The colorescience (which is the one you're referring to) uses physical filters so if your ss is entirely physical there will be no conflict. Also if you're planning to use the powder ss as a touch up ss anyways I'm sure you wouldn't need to worry about degradation of your regular ss since your regular ss is probably wearing off after a few hours anyways (thus the purpose of you using the powder ss to touch up).
As per topic I use my Clarins SPF40 year round mainly because that's the only ss I have. I don't think I'd bother buying a ss with lower SPF just for winter use (that's just silly). I also use MMU (even with my old powder makeup I had SPF 17 in it) so I get extra protection. However, I am lazy sometimes with my sunscreen especially when I'm only going out for 1-2 hours AT NIGHT, in those cases I rely on whatever spf is in my MMU. |

Now I am in Tokyo.. i have to say.. none. But if I was back in Oz, it would be SPF30 just for day to day, but full-strenght SPF50 if going out in the sun for any length of time |
