Hello,
I am going to New York in December. Not my first trip and I have done the major tourist stuff so I wanted to see if anyone had any tips or ideas of fun things to do that are not on the tour guides. Any great places to go on Canal Street? Any hidden gem restaurants?

Yaffa's Tea Room is a really great place in Tribeca to have dinner, a drink, or to just sit and visit with someone while having a lovely cup of an exotic tea. Try to sit in the cozy back area which they describe as "having a bohemian feel."
In December you may want to see the huge Christmas tree in Rockefellar Plaza.
What fun - I NY! |

Shop at Century 21 - amazing couture labels at a fraction of the price!
For a true taste of Little Italy and a really fun experience: Puglia's on Hester Street.
Great cheap Chinatown favorite: Wo Hop on Mott St.
Best corned beef sandwich in the world: Katz's Deli
Another great southern Italian place: Supreme Macaroni Co. 511 9th Ave (its in the 30s)
In general, the BEST greek food is to be had in Astoria. Best gyro of all time: Tony's Souvlaki on 31st. (under the el) between 28th & 30th Ave
And, if you're in the mood to spend money, the best store on the planet is Barneys NY on Madison.
Ok - I better stop or I'm gonna leave work, hop in the car, and drive north !!! |

I really like the Guggenheim museum.
The Cloisters (bus from the Met)is a wonderful under appreciated museum.
You have to go to Trump towers the waterfall is fun and they are the best bathrooms in NYC. If you have kids the zoo in Central Park is small but nice and there are many playgrounds.
Also it is fun to skate at Rockefeller Center but you need to go early in the morning on Sunday or a weekday or the wait can be 2 hours.
I absolutely love NYC!
See something at Lincoln Center, if you go to the Opera have dessert in their restaurant during intermission. You can sit next to the Chagall murals.
I also really like the Oyster bar in Grand Central Station (have been going there since I was 5yo). It is a real piece of NYC to sit at the Oyster bar (commuters, crotchety waiters who've been there for years and great oysters and oyster stews made in front of you). The inside of Grand Central is also beautiful.
We're going this weekend also. |

I second this!! You'll need most of the day to go through the store properly, wear comfortable shoes and you'll need a ton of patience!
Think "Ross" except all high end...good luck! |

Someone just recommended this store to me today, saying it's one of the best bargain shopping places around. I'm heading there tomorrow - fingers crossed that I find something interesting (but not too much of it ). |

Mabsy -- you're in NY? Cool! (I knew you were away but didn't know where.)
There is a pretty new Sephora just a few blocks from the Century 21.
You can get some good buys at Century 21 - if you are willing to hunt and deal with the crowds, something I'm not good at.
Dsq -- that's a great link. Thanks!
Shelley -- South Street Seaport has some nice stores and boutiques. They used to have ice skating set up in the winter and something called a singing Christmas Tree which was neat - singers on a huge metal frame in the shape of a Christmas tree singing carols.
Also, the site of the World Trade Center is near the Century 21 and Sephora.
Have a great time in NY all you lucky ladies! |
