I've been having a terrible time shipping to some Canadian customers lately. I wasn't sure what was causing the delays as I ship by Air Mail, but products I send to Europe are getting there before the ones I send to Canada!
Today, I just talked to another company and they told me it's the Canadian customs and that they're having a terrible time, too. This must be a new thing.
If anyone here from Canada buys from the U.S., I was wondering if you know any tricks to get things into your country faster. Maybe the word "cosmetics" or "skincare" on the customs form is a bad choice. I'm thinking of writing something else, but not sure what. My husband sells DVDs and he has no problems that we know of shipping to Canada.
If anyone has any ideas or thought to share on how to get products into Canada more quickly, I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks in advance,
Kathleen |

Hi keickholt13,
I'm Canadian ... and have ordered quite a bit of stuff from the U.S. Generally it takes about 2 full weeks for a parcel to come from the U.S. to me in S.W. Ontario. That's the time-frame I count on.
Some stuff DOES get to me faster ... although I'm not quite sure why. The company who manages to get stuff to me within days is tkbtrading.com ... for some reason their stuff generally gets to me in about 4 or 5 days. Perhaps they'd be willing to let you in on their secret?
I also find that stuff sent via FedEx gets to me faster than through the mail ... but it costs me a fortune! On the other hand, it is still cheaper than my taking a trip to the U.S. to get the stuff!
If I recall correctly, most of the labels have "costmetics" or "costmetic samples" on them ... so I'm not sure that it's that term that holds things up. It could, however, be the value of whatever you're sending.
Canada Customs can be very frustrating ... but I'm afraid I don't have the answers for you. If your parcels are getting there within the 2 week mark, I wouldn't worry too much. For years things have taken that long to get through customs and find their way into my mail box.
Good luck

Hi Mary,
Thanks; that was actually very helpful. At least I know it's not just me and I can let customers know that it is customs.
I will try writing that company you mention, though!
I declare very tiny amounts, like $10 or $15. Maybe I should say it's a gift and send by a personal name, not a company name. That might actually work.
At any rate, thank you so much for your help!

I get my Alima MMU shipped from Oregon, US, to Vancouver Canada, via USPS Airmail Post. They do declare "cosmetics" under Contents, and also the full value of my products. On average, it arrives in 3-4 business days! |

My experiences have ranged anywhere from a few days to 5 weeks. The latter item was from eBay and shipping was included in the purchase price, so I imagine it was sent 3rd class snail mail! Skin care items can usually take up to 2 weeks in general. Last time I ordered Epidermix II they kindly put "gift" on the package and I didn't have to pay duty Most other companies just put 'skincare' and since they are usually MMU samples, the overall value is very small, so no duty payable. |

Maybe it's Ontario causing all the problems. I'll check the addresses for the people who are having trouble getting my orders in a timely fashion.
I do put a very small value on the products so my customers don't have to pay duty at least. |

I'm in Ontario. I find that purchases usually take 2 weeks, although I have waited up to a month. I have noticed that if the items are from the east coast, they seem to take longer. Not sure why. |

i have the exact problem, i bought a handbag from a UK ebay seller. she sent it by great britain postal service in sept, and it was stuck at customs for 2 wks in canada...then it got bounced back...i kept calling canada post & customs, but no one can give us an explanation...the rejection label just checked off, sender name cannot be in arabic letters (which her name was not) ...so the seller is going to file a claim with canada post with the help of great britain postal service .
so in the end we decided to use UPS, and it arrived today finally safely into canada...its 2 mths
wonder whats going on at customs |

By the way, anyone know if the Canada discount code for shipping still works? I placed an order today & it was rejected. Thanks |

Sorry, it had expired. I set it up for another whole year, so it should work now!
CANADA -- put it in the gift certificate spot
You will get $3 off shipping--but apparently it might take 2 weeks to arrive! I am trying something new today--shipping from a personal return address, not a business one, and putting "gift" on the customs form. I'll see if that helps.

Hi Kathleen.
Just a note NOT to include an invoice in any package going to Canada that you have put "samples" or "gift". I have had packages opened that have said that and then I got hit with the duty charges- but more importantly, I think the company got in trouble.
(I don't think you include an invoice anyway but thought I would mention it.) |
