I don't have any eBay horror stories, but just thought I'd ask if any of you have sniping software?
I use "JBidWatcher" which is freeware and works on all platforms. http://www.jbidwatcher.com/ I can't tell you the fun I've had snatching something in the last 5 seconds from some poor schmo who thinks he/she has it in the bag |
Is that legal? I am surprised that ebay can't institute a firewall that detects bidding software...oh well..
Schmo |
I've never heard of that. I think I've been that poor schmo way too many times. |
Well, you're certainly not alone

It's certainly not illegal and if you've been outbid in the past, I'd recommend you use it and bid your "schmo" days goodbye |

I have a hard time imagining many - not all, but certainly not most - of the cosmetics on ebay are fakes. With handbags, there is a much bigger profit margin. If they can produce a bag for 30 bucks, and sell it for 500, that's a pretty good profit.
But with makeup, they not only have to have some generic product in place of the real deal, but they have to replicate all the packaging. For, what, a twenty dollar return? Seems like a pretty crummy business to me.
Personally, I think many of these people just have connections to wholesalers and liquidators. We have a liquidation store near me that recently got in big supply of makeup. I bought a RIDICULOUS amount of Joey New York, T. Leclerc, and Three Custom Colors products for 80% off retail. If I were an ebayer, I could have sold it all. But I'm a hoarder instead, lol!
Also, there are people who work for the cosmetics companies themselves. A few of my friends work for one the makeup giants. Pretty entry level positions, but they still got an unholy amount of freebies. Not to mention their corporate discount in the corporate store, which can lead to savings of about 90% off retail. While they are limited in how much they can buy each month, it's still possible for them to get a good number of products and turn around and sell them on ebay. Of course, being my friends, they are hoarders as well! |

I think I'm another poor schmoo who's been "sniped" on Ebay.
I frequently buy things on Ebay, including skin care and beauty items. The only "bad" beauty/skin care experience I had was receiving a product that wasn't totally full (which was not noted on the listing I bid on). I've gotten some great deals though - things I probably couldn't afford to buy at retail prices - products I've been using lately and have been very happy with.
My advice: yes, definitely feedback for %, check what negative (if any) posts say, and for # of things sold. Communicate with the seller - asking expiration dates and any other questions. Pay thru Paypal only (that's my advice for Ebay in general).
I did have one unhappy Ebay experience on an espresso machine which I could have avoided by paying closer attention to the feedback - instead of only looking at the seller's % ratinging, I should have checked the negative postings and many mutual withdrawals. I probably could have gotten my money refunded thru Paypal but they wanted me to take it to a dealer and have it evaluated (which would have cost me more $ and time). I took it as a loss.
One bad experience out of 140+. Considering all the great deals and finds I've gotten on Ebay, I still buy a lot on Ebay. |

I just got 3 tubes of Dr Hauschka Revitalizing Mask, 160 count Night Conditioner, the facial steam bath, and shipping to Canada, all for $150 US. I think that's about half of what it would have cost me elsewhere. Now I'm just crossing my fingers that I don't get stuck with customs charges. |

I'm bumping this thread because I missed it and only just now read it! Wow what eye-opening info, I would star everybody's post but I can't do that for all six pages!
I did make a purchase on ebay before, it was just the one time and I haven't bought anything off ebay since. It was the Lucia eyebrow serum from a seller in Japan (I don't even remember the seller's name now, but I'll know it when I see it). I am certain I'd bought an original item, the seller was nice, too, and had good feedback. That said I wouldn't buy any skincare or makeup stuff off ebay although I am open to buying other things (like the weird handmade jewellery my friend makes and sells on ebay).
Once again, thanks everyone for this valuable thread. (there's my star for everyone to share... ) |

It's not that hard to fake it when the stuff might be being made in a factory after hours. And the volume and mark up on something that cost nothing in the first place well its just pure profit.
What I see on ebay is expired stuff or close to, stolen, damaged mark offs, testers, fakes and stuff that someone bought and didn't like. So like with anything buyer beware. If its too much of a hassle to return anything I dont buy it. |

I have been a die-hard ebayer for 9+ years. I have bought everything from high-end jewelry, antiques, art, designer clothing, hardware, electronics (one of the most risky categories on ebay)...you name, and I have probably experienced it on ebay, lol. I have also sold on ebay as well.
As far as beauty products are concerned, the rumors about people peeing in bottles, etc. are mostly just rumors, and ways that sellers are trying to discredit each other. A recent example of that was the big deal about the type of seal offered on the Revitalash bottles. (BTW, I always buy Revitalash on ebay for about $70...why pay $150??)
A couple of ebay tips for beauty products:
- ALWAYS buy from sellers that have a very high % of positive feedback.
- ALWAYS ask about expiration dates, if your product usually has them.
- Know that there are reputable sellers who acquire their products in ethical ways (like from wholesalers who sell goods with damaged boxes), AND reputable sellers who acquire goods in unethical ways (like cosmetic sales people who steal from their makeup brand).
- Understand that the product may not have been stored in optimal conditions - excessive heat may impact sensitive components, change the smell of perfumes, etc. Pick and choose what you buy on ebay carefully.
- Try to always buy SEALED products if at all possible
- ALWAYS buy from sellers that accept credit cards directly or take Paypal)...you have NO RECOURSE if you pay with a check or money order, and your product isn't as advertised or never shows up.
- ALWAYS check out the return policy that the seller offers.
- Don't bid early (and frequently) on an auction...you are just driving up the price for yourself and the rest of the inexperienced ebayers!
- Never leave feedback until after you have received and tried the product.
HTH!
