i agree with Athena here, I have never received a fake item from ebay and buy my skincare on there all the time. In fact, i just purchased a few Ice elements products on there since HSN is basically clean out of IE. saying that, i don't think i would purchase a really expensive skin care product like la mer or jan marini from any seller that wasn't a beauty store and had multiple items of the same thing available. |

Most bags sold on ebay are fake. Even for sellers with excelent feedback. Sometimes they are better made then the real things though.
I would say if the deal sounds too good to be true it most likely is.
I would never buy skincare on ebay. I just would not trust the items.
I would and did bought several cell phones on ebay and am quite happy with them. They were Europen/Aasian models and were exactly as advertised. it is a gray market merchandise, and thus there is room for a reasonably honest way to make money for the seller.
Yo can buy some designer clothes on ebay, but only if you know exactly what you are bying.
I would summarize that it is a good tool for an educated consumer.

You are probably right & I'm happy you've had good experiences.
Guess I've heard too many stories of rip offs on ebay to be confident. Perhaps it's the old addage that you never hear about the good, only the bad.
I may even try ebay one day...just seems like a complicatd process to go thru to buy something to is so easily available from places like EDS.
But I did seriously consider ebay for some of my v. xpensive Sisley products...never followed thru tho'. Just seemed to riskey to me. |

I never had a problem buying from eBay. It is very important to buy from a seller with good feedbacks. I always ask the expiry dates and confirm the shipping cost before I bid. If the seller doesn't respond within one day, I'd move on to other seller. |

You all are giving good tips for that big day when I decide to take the plunge.
For now, just finished opening my latest purchases (from EDS & another site) and am thrilled.
Lip Fusion lip plumping pencil works as promised....hurray. But I digress.... |

I used to buy PTR from Ebay in the States but I suspect at least one or two of them were 'end of bin' (or whatever the expression is) as they did not seem as effective as stuff I've bought here in the shops so may be older (?) - luckily, I can now buy from EDS and it's definitely fresh
I wouldn't on the whole buy a handbag on Ebay, the reason sellers have good feedback is most of the people who buy designer handbags on Ebay can't spot the fake from the real thing. I've seen handbag styles which have never even been in the designer's collection.
On the other hand, if we are talking new stuff generally, I have sold new handbags on Ebay which are authentic (honest) - when I go to Italy I try and visit the Prada outlet store (love Prada classic clothes and accessories) and if I find a handbag which I want and if itr happens to be a style I think will sell, I'll get say three and sell two which will just give me enough profit to pay for mine. Whilst this is a rare occurence, not some sort of business therefore I don't have tons of feedback on selling handbags (though have excellent feedback overall), I always offer a copy of the receipt from Prada and also offer pick ups from my home which some people take advantage of.
I also do it with beauty products e.g. Santa Maria Novella body lotion is £60 here but I pick it up for 20 euros in the shop in Florence. I don't make big bucks though, maybe I'll get £25 or £30 for it so it's debatable whether it's worth lugging it back.
I've also had occasions where I've bought items of clothing in a sample sale in the UK or in the Prada outlet store in Italy thinking if I don't like it I can always sell it, e.g. a dress I've paid £250 for (though originally £1,000) and not been able to sell it for what I paid for it so maybe I am the worst Ebay seller ever. Far too honest lol. |

I buy lots of stuff on eBay and most of the time it's a good experience. For designer handbags, post to the shoes and handbag community board and the experts there will help you athenticate before you bid. I love Prada and I buy from a seller from Australia who gets her stuff from Italy direct, at a fraction of the price.
To check all negative and neutral feedback of a seller, go to toolhaus.org and key in the seller name. You can see all bad feedback seller received and left. |

I buy all my skin products off ebay,I have never had a problem with anything on ebay,I even bought Jan Marini on ebay and its working fine growing my lashes. I save quite a bit of $$$ by buying samples usually from the same sellers, sometimes I email the sellers and I just buy it straight thru the seller without ebay, never had a problem and I have saved a ton of $$$$. |

Trust your instincts on eBay. Read feedback carefully (though even feedback can be stacked) and read every bit of an item's description, shipping info, payment info, etc. Sometimes I'm uncomfortable with the way something is worded or how a page is laid out, so I stay away. You can tell when someone is posting stuff in a hurry--I usually stay away from those too.
I've sold a number of items, always auction style with no reserve (because I'm not trying to run a business or anything), and while I've had a few non-payers, generally it's been a good experience. |

i have bought directly from sellers before but I wouldn't recommend doing so. I have heard of people getting ripped from sellers and not being able to file any type of claim because 1) it was through ebay and 2) they didn't use paypal.
i have also had sellers soliciting me after a bid offering to sell me a product off ebay. I always refuse because that is against ebay's policies and i always wonder why these sellers are watching other seller's auctions. |

I think one of the smartest thing that eBay did was implementing the feedback system. When I see a seller with a high number of feedbacks and with a feedback of high 90's, I then stalk the feedback list to see what the negative ones are about As a result, I've never had a problem with purchasing on eBay. And in terms of skincare, definitely get sealed, boxed products and ask for expiry dates. |

Wowee! Another great ebay find! Great deal for Dr. Hauschka eyeshadow duos! I asked the seller why they were available for such a great price and she responded within 30 minutes - reduced price because their packaging is changing for 2007.

Occasional sellers are fine, but how about those ebay store sellers who have tons of products? Could all of them be stolen or testers? How could they get that many?!
I am scared.. but glad I am here to read the post, ^_^ |

Congratulations Lotus! You are no longer an ebay virgin Just for grins, I hopped on ebay and checked out the seller you refer to - based upon their positive feedback for similar mineral based product and the total feedback rating, I would be very comfortable bidding with this seller - They also charge a very reasonable rate for shipping, always a plus.
I also noticed that they have received 9807 positive feedback ratings and their total feedback score is 3911. This indicates they have a lot of repeat business which is the best sign of all.
I'm positive this first ebay experience will be a good one for you, keep us posted! |

I buy probably the majority of my skincare products, including sunscreen, and some makeup, on eBay. I've never had a problem with things being fake or diluted. Like everyone else says, just check the feedback history. I agree that a lot of the sellers are probably SA's from beauty counters. They have access to tons of samples. And many sellers have a full-scale business where they acquire items and then sell them. Ebay seller Wasabina, who sells Anthelios sunscreens, comes to mind.
I also agree that you should check the expiration date. Many sellers actually show the date in the listing. |
