Has anyone used Benzaclin? I believe it is a mixture of both Benzoyl Peroxide and Clindamycin. I is great at clearing up my acne, however it is very drying for my skin. I do not have other experience with these medications. Do they have to be used as a preventative, or can I just use them as a spot treatment? Any input would be very valuable to me! Thanks |

Hi Astrokitty,
I used Benzaclin for about 4 years and stopped about a year and a half ago. Clindamycin is an antibiotic, so using it as a spot treatment wouldn't accomplish much because you'd only be killing the bacteria when using it. If it's drying out your skin from everyday use, maybe try every other day, just stay consistent. |

I can? I assumed that it would render the benzaclin ineffective. This is good news for me! Have you used the Benzaclin yourself?
Thanks! |

It is just like any other BP product. Moisturizer shouldn't be a problem. I've been prescribed Benzaclin by several derms and all of them have said I can use a moisturizer if needed.
The last few years, I have switched to just Clindagel because the BP makes my face really red. For me, the clindagel works as well as the benzaclin, without the redness or bleaching my pillowcase.
Give your derm a call to double check about the moisturizer, that is a question that he should be able to answer for you over the phone.

Hi astrokitty.
I used Benzaclin for about 2 years and also used Duac (same active ingredients as Benzaclin) for a year. I have very sensitive skin and delt with not only dryness but also irritation when I was using these products. Here are some things that helped me.
-Originally my derm said to use the Benzaclin twice a day. It soon became obvious that my skin would never tolerate that. I was for the most part able to tolerate using this only once a day. When I was using this once a day and using Differin in the evening my skin was pretty much acne free. I even went to every other day application at some point and found that this also worked very well for me. So if you are using this twice a day I would suggest trying to use it only once a day.
-I switched to a non-drying cleanser and this helped alot. For over a year I was also washing my face only in the evening. In the morning I would just rinse with water. I can't believe how much doing this cut down on the irritation and the dryness.
-You can definetly use a moisturizer over the Benzaclin. Just wait a minute or two for it to absorb some. I always used a moisturizer over the Benzaclin. I guess some may say that this reduces the effectiveness of the medication but at least for me a little reduced effectiveness was okay because it also meant less irritation and dryness. If you are concerned about reducing the Benzaclin's effectiveness then wait a little longer than 2 minutes before you apply the moisturizer.
You really need to apply the Benzaclin to your acne prone areas on a regular basis. Spot treating will not work. Occasionally if I got a pimple in my non acne prone areas I would spot treat but otherwise I was always very consistent in applying my acne meds. |
