Hi, I am thinking of using retinol to help minimise/erase those pesky lines under my lines.
I have never used retinol before and need advice as to what percentage and product to use.
Would PSF Retinol Nite Repair 0.5% or Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5% be a good place to start? |

Yes, both of those products would be a good place to start.
Start off using every third night for one/two weeks, then every other night, gradually working up to every night.

Ninetynine -
If you're interested in trying a Vit A product that's a little more gentle (but possibly not AS effective) and is not in a cream base, you may want to check out Vivant Exfol A.
I'm too new to post a link, but you can purchase at betterhealthyskin.com or dianayvonne.com. I'm pretty sure you can purchase sample at dianayvonne.
If you're new to using Vit A, I'm thinking that it might be a good product to use as a "stepping stone" to a stronger retinol product.

When my parcel rrives from France I will be using Avene's Eulage.
It is supposed to be excellent (check out MUA).
I'll LYK.

I agree with Emma2006. I use Avene Ystheal+ cream or gel or Diacnel (1% retinaldehyde + glycolic acid).
(I'm pretty sure I have this right) Retinaldehydes are the strongest form of retinol without a prescription.
I used to use Green Cream but that was irritating if I used too much. Ystheal has been extremely well tolerated for me. |

Hi Rjez, how do the 3 Avene product differ in terms of texture? Which one do you like best and why? I'm eyeing the Ystheal Gel and Eluage Gel as I have combo skin and they seem to absorb better and faster, but my concern is they may be a bit drying for winter.
I've never used Retinol products before but did once try a sample of PSF Retinol. Though it is rather lightweight in texture, it left my face shiny. So I want something that leaves no residue and absorbs fast. Any recommendation? |

LMAO .... Okay, I'm laughing here because I am NOT the one to ask. Really, most of everything I know is from the experts. But here's my stab at things until someone else chimes in:
Retinaldehyde is stronger than retinol.
retinol must be converted to retinaldehyde, and then on to retinoic acid to be effective. The reaction in the skin goes:
retinol (aka RO) => retinaldehyde (aka RAL) => retinoic acid (ie. tretinoin, aka retin a)
Retinaldehyde is one step closer, so it gives you a higher dose of retinoic acid per capita. (This is why it's also a better deal than Green Cream which is retinol).
Ystheal+ gel cream for eyes: 0.015% retinaldehyde. I won't be reordering this. It has a light texture but also the lowest retinaldehyde. It IS nice and there has been some tightening of my eyes (upper and lower) and lessening of dark circles. BUT, I can tolerate more retinaldehyde.
Ystheal+ gel: This is actually being discontinued. It has 0.05% retinaldehyde and is nice for oily areas or days.
Ystheal+ cream: Same as above but in a cream form. I can use this all over, including eyes. 0.05% retinaldehyde cream intended for dry skin.
Diacnel: 6% glycolic acid and 0.1% retinaldehyde. The glycolic acid sometimes stings a little but this stuff is great.
Eluage: Is the most expensive because it contains HA and is marketed for 'anti-aging'. The others are marketed for 'acne'. I really don't know much about this. I have a sample but haven't tried yet.
You can buy above throughwww.tubotica.com and if you post on MUA they have a discount.
Or, you can purchase Retrinal (U.S. version of Ystheal) online in the U.S. Retrinal is available in three concentrations: 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%. The ingredients are similar to Ystheal Creme but Retrinal is reportedly lighter in texture. I think Diacnel is also available in the U.s.
I just really love how gentle these products are. For me, I haven't had any reactions vs. Green Cream which itches if I use too much.
As Emma2006 suggests, you can read Tetrakis and Beethovengirl's notepads for more indepth info on Avene and retinaldehydes. |

I did like the ystheal gel but I am a bit of a bugger when it comes to skincare and cnstantly think there must be something even better.
I'll post up when my Eulage (sp?) arrives and how I like it. |

Emma kindly let me try out the Avene Ystheal Eye Gel and I have to say that even at such low concentration it has helped to reduce dark circles under my mother's eyes. I don't know about wrinkles because she won't stay still long enough for me to 'examine'.
She is using it every night and because it is so gentle she has had no adverse reaction.
I would definitely recommend Avene Ystheal products since the eye gel is effective. |

I'm so glad that your Mum loves the gel.
I ordered some shampoos from the US for my MUM (Morroccan Method ones). I like looking after my Mum's beauty routine too.

I had a look at Tubotica and couldn't believe the amount of the postage - I think it was about £10 |

Thanks Marla, have you used the Vivant Exfol A. Do you know what is percentage the Vit A? |
No, I don't know. You should look at betterhealthyskin.com -- it's Dr Fulton's website that might be able to answer questions better than I can. Dr. Fulton is one of the co-creators of Retin A.
I've used many Vit A products in the past (SkinCeuticals Retinol, Green Cream, Tazorac cream, Tazorac gel, Retin A) and, so far, like the Exfol A's delivery system the best. It sinks right in and doesn't leave my skin feeling too oily or too dry or too sensitive.

cuppre - Did your mom notice any skin tightening? I noticed that my dark circles are mostly gone (have a slight circle under one eye - genetic). AND, I noticed that my upper eyelids and undereye are tighter.
Ninetynine - forgot that Avene can be found in some CVS stores. I know people on the east coast have found Ystheal. |

Rjez - I'd forgotten that.
Priceline carry a few items - I haven't seen the gel or eulage here though. |

Yeah - I'm nowhere near a CVS so I always forget that some people can walk to a neighborhood drugstore and buy it! Meanwhile, us unfortunates have to order from Spain, sigh. |

Thanks for all the help.
I will go and checkout Priceline over the weekend. If I can't find Avene there, I will probably go with Marla's suggestion and order Exfol A from Diane Yvonne. I think from memory, it's on special last time I checked. |

Yeah I like the gel but am currently using a sample of the Eluage.
Have you tried Diroseal at all? I tried a bit on my hand the other day at the chemist and thought it felt quite nice. I might get that next as Im getting a bit sick of having to order stuff online so much. |
