I lived on the Central coast for 3 months while doing an internship last year. I'm assuming you're going to LA, but Santa Barbara is only about 2 hours north. This time of year, there's a lot of whale watching because they're migrating, and sharks....if you're into that stuff.
The only thing I know about LA is that LAX is right next to Inglewood. I got lost getting off the 405, and I don't recommend it....those rappers are not lying about that place. |

Nikki, where in California are you headed? I'm in Los Angeles (west side, away from all the nastiness!) and can probably give you an idea of places to go. |

The 405! Bane of my existence! Aaaack! Its the freeway closest to me, how I got back and forth to school (even though UCLA is only 6 miles from me!) and how I get back down to Newport Beach when I go to visit friends. It is almost always a parking lot! If I had a dime for every minute I've wasted of my life being stuck in traffic on the 405, I'd be able to purchase my own tropical island! |

Ooooh...the OC . I called it that when I was out there, I'm sure everyone thought I was a stupid Midwesterner. |

Hi Sushi! I was born and raised in Orange County - lived there most of my life (except the past several years in LA for university). No one who is a native of OC calls it "the OC" - its just that stupid TV show makes everyone think we do! If you called it that, people probably just thought it was because of that show.
I think the reason they named the show that is because everyone who wasn't from OC who traveled there called it "going behind The Orange Curtain" because its well-known for being a small, conservative, suburban community that leans Republican. I've read numerous articles that state that little Orange County has more gross national product than many entire countries out there. I know there are A LOT of really wealthy people that live there - I was not one of them (darn it)! |

Ok, BH is not far from me. It really depends on how long you're going to be here (there's A LOT to see and do) and what your interests are. If you don't already know this, keep in mind that LA is very big and very spread out. Everyone drives because we don't have a good public transport system at all, so a rental car is a good idea. Freeway systems are big and confusing, and the worst drivers in the world are in LA so be careful. If your uncle is a member of the Auto Club, he can get all kinds of maps and recommendations from them on things to do.
Please elaborate on when you'll be here, what you hope to do when you're here and how long you will stay. Do you like museums? Theme parks, shopping, sports? You can surf and snow ski (if there were snow on the local mountains, which there is not ATM) in the same day if you like outdoorsy stuff. |

Why don't you ask your uncle for tips and ideas? That would seem like the most logical person to ask. |

I saw something really strange on that freeway that I never understood; we were driving out of town and there was a break in the oncoming traffic, all of the sudden this cop pulled out in front of all those cars and parked his car sideways to completely stop all the traffic on the freeway! It was like a movie. |

I'm in northern California if anyone ever wants ideas for Napa, Carmel, San Francisco.
Oh, and I'm from Hawai'i so I keep a list of rec's for all the islands. |

Sushi, that's not so strange here, actually! He was running a traffic break (not sure what its called official), and it could've been for any reason - anything from protecting traffic from debris in the roadway to creating a clear stretch of road for a helicopter or light plane to land. (Yes, its happened before - when helicopters or small planes can't make LAX, the CHP (California Highway Patrol) will run a traffic break so the small plane can actually land on the freeway. It doesn't happen often at all, but when it does and if you're on the freeway at the time, you can forget about going anywhere for a very long time unless you happen to be near an exit at the time!) They might've also had a report of a suspect on the road or been clearing the way for emergency vehicles.
And speaking of movies, I just read where one of the studios is filming sequences for "Live Free, Die Hard" (sounds like another Bruce Willis sequel) on an adjacent freeway, the 105, and that traffic on the 405 is expected to be worse than ever. I sure hope I don't have to go anywhere south of here for the next couple weeks! That's the kind of crap I hate about living here. Hopefully its just a rumor. |

nikki--the griffith observatory reopened this last friday after 4 years of renovation. that would be an awesome place to visit, but if you go, you need to make reservations. The place is awesome, you get to see all the star and space stuff. also the huntington museum and botanical gardens are awesome.
