I have been really sick with some kind of awful head thing, and I have a weird symptom that I can't find anything on. Instead of running a fever, my temp is low (96.3 F compared to 98.6, which would be normal.) I'm getting better, but I'm very curious about this. Has anyone ever heard of it outside of hypothermia, thyroid problems, and gram-negative sepsis? |

A low body temperature just means that your body is operating at a lower than optimal metabolic state. It's very common when you have an infection that is respiratory or sinus related since your body's utilization of oxygen is lowered. It's nothing to worry about unless it's chronic. When it IS chronic, especially in women, the most common cause is anemia...
But, WAIT, the GOOD news is that lower body temp means slower aging (although that doesn't mean you should sleep in the fridge ). |

Oh, great! I might feel like s***, but at least I'm not aging much this week!
Yeah, it's nothing serious. It's just one of those annoying things where you feel like crap for a week and then get better. |

Tosca, Also sometimes if it's a simple virus you may run lower than the proverbial normal of 98.6. Just like the WBC part of a CBC can be lower than normal with a virus. This is not a hard and fast rule but more often the case than not. Good luck with your illness. I too have been sick this past with some kind of respiratory virus, think I got it from my granddaughter |

That does sound odd...could it be your sinuses? Does your head hurt?
My body temperature always hovers around 96.6 for some reason. As a result, I almost always feel too warm. So, the two or three times that I've ever had a "fever", my temperature went up to about 98. Doctors have never told me what causes my low temperature. I wish I could be more help.
Feel better! Orange juice, orange juice, orange juice! |

I'm no dr, but I've heard some people just run colder than others. Whenever I go to the dr, I'm about 97.3 degrees. They've never seemed alarmed... |

Yes, RedDevil,I had a horrible headache for about three days, but it's gone now. Whoopee!!
That's basically what I was looking for, a medical reason reason. I've never been one of those people that run colder than normal. I'm usually right at 98.6. It didn't worry me, but I wanted to know why. - Always want to know why... It's a burning question for me.
At this point, I'm assuming that because I couldn't breathe, my respiratory sys wasn't getting lots of O2, and dropped by body temp and metabolism down to adjust.
I took my temp because DH insisted. He seems to think it will make you feel better. After it came out so low, I started monitoring it out of curiosity, and I couldn't find any satisfactory info on the internet, other than sepsis, which I certainly don't have. I asked a prof of biology, but she didn't know, so I thought I'd ask all of you.
Nomoreneckpain, I hope you feel better! |
