I am an adult male that just got his acne under control, but now get shiny skin after about an hour of washing my face in the morning. I use sunscreen (Obagi or Z-Silc) everyday and 3 times a week use the Obagi Nu Derm system (Iím in the maintenance phase). As I donít want to use makeup to get rid of the shininess, what can I do to help keep it under control? Someone recommended a product called OC Eight. Any thoughts?

Hi PlasmaJ,

I can only speak from what I know but it could be that your skin is overcompensating for dryness/irritation caused by your regime by producing more oil. Is your cleanser very harsh (high alcohol content etc)?

There are users of Obagi on this board and I am sure they will come forward with some suggestions.

I hesitate to give you a recommendation outside of your regime but I can vouch for Decleor Aromaessence Ylang Ylang oil as an overall regulator for skin. It comes in a little bottle and all you need is 2 or 3 drops max so it lasts ages.

I also think that the best "mattifying" product I have used is Decleor Matte Finish Skin Fluid. It is a moisturiser but keeps skin matte. This is a fantastic product. It is not the cheapest but you can try a sample and see if it works for you. Decleor is very gentle and very rarely causes reactions/breakouts from all reviews here.

I am sure Obagi users will jump in and sort you out.

A lot of oily people here love the jurlique silk dust and the decleor ylang ylang balm for controlling oil. You can use the search feature for the product reviews forum if you are intersted in finding reviews for these products.

I broke out terribly from the ylang ylang oil. I like to use johnson baby poweder...the one made with pure cornstarch, aloe and vit. e, just dusting a thin layer on my skin keeps it from getting oily. ( I read about this on mua)

I have used Sothys' Oil Control Serum for over 3 years...and I can say my skin has stabilised to the point where I don't have to use it any longer. (Less shine and oil) But I must admit that other factors could have helped my (previously impossible) oily skin: the fact my skin has become drier due to (gurk!) age and the fact that I am on progesterone pills (for birth control).

You might also want to try Dermalogica's Oil Control Lotion, that one packs a punch, and smells like some chemical. It bites a little, can't say I liked it on my skin, but it may help. I read somewhere that although your skin might be oily on the surface, there's a chance it may be really dry underneathe. So you may be dehydrating your skin if you use too much oil control products?

plasma, I have oily skin as well with a tendency to get the shines after 5 hours. The only thing that seems to work for me is Peter Thomas Roth's Max Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel. I put it on under my mineral makeup in the am, then when my T-zone starts getting shiny by lunchtime, I'll dab on a little more. By the end of the day, makeup is still there and not longer sliding off.

Bottle is black and white, kind of medicinal looking - you will still be a MANLY Man when you stock this in your shaving kit Smile

I agree with the mattifying gels. Skinn Cosmetics also has a nice one call orchid gel and totally takes shine away.
