I recently had my entire head coloured instead of my usual just highlights (done professionly) and it seems to me that I'm losing larger amounts of hair daily. I know that its normal to lose hair daily but what I'm losing seems excessive. Has anyone else had excessive hair loss associated with dying their hair? |

is it falling out or breaking off?
Look closely at a few starnds, a fallen out hair, will have a white tiny bulb on the end. (thats the hair root)
A broken hair will have no bulb.
Broken hair is from damage. Treatment is some good protein treatments, followed by some good deep conditioners, this can stop breakage immediately.
Falling out hair, is a bit different. It is normal to loose from 50 to 100 hairs a day, and can change from seasonal varients, hormons, stress, diet, age, health, medications, birth control pills, products used on hair etc. I have actually changed my hair fall out rate from 50/day down to 10 a day year round, do to changes in suppliments, and styling etc.
It is more common to hold hair in winter, and loose it faster in summer. And when season change (winter/summer - fall/winter) it is common to loose a lot for a few weeks. Indoor heat also facters in and can increase fall. But usually after a few weeks it does settle down.
Stress from the dye can also cause a fall out increase for a few days from the manipulation involved, but unless you are reacting to the chemicials, this normally stops in a few days. |

Thanks for posting this, Tangal. I seem to be losing a lot of hair these days, and I take a ton of supplements. I'm blaming it on stress, and I don't expect things to let up for me much before summertime. I hope I'm not bald by then. |

if it is lost hair, not breakage - do concider 4000 mcg of MSM daily. Wonderful stuff, and results are fast. I prefer a powder version from online, easier to adjust dose that way.
One study showed 4000 mcg daily for 6 weeks doubled hairgrowth speed, shine, thicxkness and hair attachment -resulting in less shed in 60 % of the subjects. (mixed very small group of men and women, 20 people I think)
Start at 500 mcg twice daily, working upto 2000 mcg twice daily (over about one month)
Good online sources if you want powder www bio-alternatives . net or www . msn-msn . com
You can also get capsel versions in all drustores near joint suppl;iments.
I also recomend GNC Ultra Norish Hair - good stuff. Rates excellent at drugstore . com |

Tangal, is that mcg or mg? I just looked at my MSM and each tab is 1500 mg.
Thanks

Oh, and there's a lot in the news about Paraphenylenediamine (PPD)sensitivity around here lately. Evidently, if you're sensitive (or develop sensitivity after years of use), effects can range from hair loss to dermatitis and a trip to the ER.
So, of course, I've switched to non-permanent haircolor just in case that was the cause of my hair thinning.

Within the past 12 months both my primary care physician and dermatologist have ordered thyroid tests because of the amount of hair loss experienced over the past year. The tests are normal and their conclusion, due to my age and the onset of menopause is "female pattern hair loss". Biotin supplements did not help at all. I'll check out MSM today. Thanks for the tip.
Maybe I'll actually open the box of Rogaine I bought last month and try using it. |

If you're taking any medication, it's possible that could be responsible for hair loss. I was prescribed Progesterone to treat heavy periods and noticed within a couple of weeks that I was losing loads of hair when combing or washing it. I've now come off it and my hair loss has really slowed down and thickening up again, so if you are taking anything, it's worth checking out possible side effects. |

Rogaine,...not good for me.
I had some hair starting to thin on my temples, I tryed Rogain for a month. (the liquid with alcohol base)
Anyway, I did not feel happy about the alcohol base, because it can be drying to hair, mine is fine, mid back and I color it. But good shape overall.
After useing Rogaine for two months, I colored my hair, and had a lot of breakage. Unusual for me, I never have breakage, don't heat style or blow dry my hair etc.
I looked close and ALL the breakage was at my temples, only where I used the Rogain - Not on older more damaged hair ends, where you normally get breakage.
I have never in my life had breakage in this area. Rogain went in the trash.
I am sure its fine for many, but with my fine, long and color treated hair, just a no -go. |

Can I PM you some info/links? I cannot post them here.
Also GNC Norish Hair - great stuff - really. Read the reviews at Drugstore.com and 4000 mg of MSM. But also there are a few other things that may help.
But I need more details on your personal issues, and products used etc.
Let me know if you have breakage, or lose hair from the scalp?
MSM, EFA and other supplimenmts do wonders on loss scalp hair. I also have a good scalp oil treatment some of you can REALLY use. I can give you the ingrediants to make it - or make a few bottles if someone wants some, If I have enough. Need to check my "stores" first though - LOL
But some of the info incluides online links. |

heres from a PM I sent a poster - this is for hair loss, not breakage. But some may be interested.
Sounds like you are losing hair at the scalp then. This is from loss attachment issues.
First, look at you hair habits, how often do you wash your hair? What products do you use? Is your scalp oily, dry? Irritated. That can all help.
I really recommend you stat with the GNC Ultra Nourish Hair, you can get it at any GNC store, or online atwww.drugstore.com orwww.gnc.com.
I have a gold card, which gives you 20% off the first week of every month.
Reviews are here. Read them . (click the orange stars)

When I started taking this product, I notice hair loss slowed drastically in two weeks. Results can take as long as 6 weeks though.
I know there are many hair vitamins out there, but really – this is one of the better ones. Most don’t have enough of the right stuff, or are to costly. Don’t get the Hair Skin and Nails formula – get the Ultra Norrish Hair. It has more Biotin and such and is overall better.
I also really like and recommend the GNC Women’s Mega Multi Vitamin as well, with the Ultra Nourish Hair.

But if you have another daily multi you like also – that’s fine two.
This is a link on another board I wroth, it has a number of supplements you can also try, and why. Its good reading, and I suggest you check it also.
http://www.sunless.com/phorum/read.php?f=2&i=608757&t=608601
I am Vicki II/III there.
I also really suggest you go with MSM 4000 mg total daily. I like the powder because you can easily adjust the dose.
You can get it fromwww.msm-msm.com orwww.bio-alternatives.net.
One studies showed an increase in growth and attachment in 6 weeks after starting 4000 mg of MSM.
Most people notice less hair loss within 7 days of starting MSM.
MSM Links:

I also recommend mild low detergent Sulfate free shampoos, and minimize washing to only 2 to 3 times a week.
Other options to help hair loss:
For a scalp treatment oil that helps with increased hair growth, and lessening of shedding, use this one. Good for Bald Patches, and thinning areas, and those with lots of daily hair loss.
Chrome Dome Scalp Oil Blend
1/2 Teaspoon Chrome Dome Oil Blend
4 ozs of Carrier Oil, Emu or Jojoba
Shake well, store in dark glass bottle with pointed applicator or dropper spout. Apply to scalp daily at night until shedding slows, then apply two to three times a week. Message well.
May take two shampoos to remove all oil.
Thickness and increased growth apparent in 4 to 6 months.
Chrome Dome Oil available here:
http://www.essentialwholesale.com/sh...l+Oil+Bl ends
From this site.

You can also add Cayenne Pepper and Aspirin to your Shampoo, as seen in this post.
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=37312
Cayanne Shampoo Recipe:
16 Aspirin dissolved into 1/2 cup of water, add 1 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper. (dissolve) Mix into bottle of shampoo. Shake well. Shampoo as normal, don’t get into eyes. You should feel new growth in one to two weeks. |

Sorry looks like the long Hair Community site links work slow, if you wait they DO come up..
Do read them, excellent tips, and reviews there.
The ChromeDome oil is good for hair that falls out fast, either from hormonal, medical stress or other issues. Many girls there had amazing results with it.
Apply nightly at first, shampoo out in the AM. I personally cannot leave it on over night, to smelly. So I only leave it a few hours then shampoo. After two weeks of this to jump start, then move to 2 to 3 times a week, if issues seem to improve. Also helps new hair growth increase. Maintance is once a week.
The Asprin/Cayanne wash is to stimulate new hair growth. It uses an counter irritent tecnology with the pepper. Much like the Nixion shampoo does with Peppermint extract. (irritates the scalp to increase blood flow)
You can also buy the Cheaper Nixon Generic/knock off at Sallys beauty Supply for half the cost of the original. Almost identicial product.
http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/623/623802
It is a bit harsh, so I did not use it on every shapmoo, but you can at first, until hair loss stops. Then use once a week as needed.
Other products in the line. (I have not used them)

I also like the Folligen spray. A friend used this on her husband, and he noticed hair growth of new baby hair all over after aboout 6 weeks.
I also did, but I tend to forget to use it regularly. But when I do, I do have some results, though not as dramatic as friends husband did.
But it is another option, some may want to look at.

For hair breakage.
First hop over to Sally’s beauty Supply and pick up a good protein Treatment like Apohogee. http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1215/670510
This is stronger then the CAT, Jerry Redding Etc. And works excellent to immediately stop hair breakage. But it is intense, I don't recomend unless hair is badly damaged and breaking. For less damaged hair use the lighter protein treatments or a protein conditioner.
Wash hair lightly with a gentle sulfate free shampoo. Then apply this product, covering all hair. Then blow dry. As it dries it will get sticky and hard – this is NORMAL. Do not try to comb or agitate when it gets hard. Once it is all dry, get in the shower, wet it, it will soften- and rinse all out.
Then liberally apply a good deep conditioner of choice. I like:
Aussie 3 Minute (or Sallys Gereric Version) -http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1215/264310
Loreal Theropy - http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1215/500342
Nutrogenia Triple Moisture- http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=86554&catid=11938&trx=PLST-0-SEARCH&trxp1=11938&trxp2=86554&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SEARCH
Feirea - http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1480/500485
Biolage Ultra Balm, or Walgreens or Sallys generic Version- http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1205/264074
Wrap hair in plastic wrap or shower cap, and then a towel (or heat cap) let set under heat for 20 minutes if you can. Use a heat cap, or wrap in a warm towel. (warm in microwave or dryer, replace as it cools)
Rinse hair. Gently gently gently comb hair just to detangle. Do not fuss with hair more then needed, it breaks and stretchs more when wet. Let dry, then comb out and style. Hair will break less when dry.
Do the above treatment a few times a week, or once a week until breakage is better, or for about 6 weeks.
After that deep condition deeply once a week, with product of choice for your hair type, you can use a lighter protein treatment like CAT or Jerri Redding or ION, (or Soy Sauce mixed with a little ACV) weekly or monthly as needed.
For daily use, also get a conditioning spray on treatment, to lessening tangling when wet, and make easier combing. I like the gereric Infusium, put in a spray bottle, and use after every shower on wet hair.
http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1210/264031
A good hair glossing hair serum or serum spray with silicons will help a lot also if you like Silicons. A few good brands out there based on your needs.
I like the Red hair one at Sallys alot. ( I have very red dyed hair) http://www.sallybeauty.com/shop/1252/425604
But Biolage or the generic is good if you prefer that one. (I have fine/medium hair) for course or curly hair a heavier one like the Citre Shine or other drugstore one works excellent also. Only use a little! I will try the Paves next.
The Apogee is heavy duty, most people only use it once every 6 weeks, and do always follow with a deep heavy conditioner after.
Use gentle mild, low detergent Sulfate free shampoos on hair when you can. Only shampoo one to three times a week as needed. Scalp only. Though you can rinse and condition daily.
Never brush wet hair, use only a wide tooth comb to minimize breakage.
Limit heat styling, blow drying and flat irons. Air dry when you can Use an ION type blow Dryer. Wal-Mart has a great low cost one I love. Its Red.
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3999276
If you like OJON restorative Hair Treatment, http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=142423&catid=25437&trx=PLST-0-SEARCH&trxp1=25437&trxp2=142423&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-SEARCH
start using plan Palm oil alone, or mixed with coconut oil instead on hair.
A tiny tiny bit applied daily on ends, then style. Or all over, set for 20 min with heat, or overnight, then shampoo for deep conditioning. OJON is Simply 95% American Palm Oil, not some fancy rare oil, (unlike what the ad says – look at the ingredients at drugstore.com and you will see), and you can get Palm Oil very cheap, with the same results.
Coconut oil is excellent at helping add protein back to damaged hair, and lessening protein loss. It works wonderfully. It is one of the few oils that actually penetrates hair, most don’t. The other ingredients are in there in small amounts, and are really not the major activities in this product. I also like to mix it with some Meadowfoam oil for a bit more shine. |

did they bleach your hair before they dyed it? the last time that happened to me I lost a lot of hair as well. now I only get my hair "coated", which makes my hair shiny with only a hint of color that's basically only really noticeable in the sun. this is kind of morbid but I've heard that hair dyes can be so potent that each color actually shows up on your skull. my uncle who's a medical doctor said that it's really bad for your skin and your health. then again, he's never had to walk around with some really heinous looking roots! ah, beauty really is pain. |
