My office is located on the edge of Tokyo's national government district, which means wide and busy roads - all of which are lined with beautiful Plane Trees that have huge leaves; lovely and shady in summer, but of course fall off in winter (they dont even really have the nice coloring first either, they just kind of dry up).

Now that the leaves are starting to die off (but are not dropping yet), the local council have moved in and I got a good laugh today at their way to deal with the leaf raking problem - chop off the branches completely before the leaves can drop! Yup that is right, the council is going around giving the trees a big - HUGE actually - prune. They are lopping off all leaves and branches, leaving just little stubbs sticking out of the top of the trunk. Saves on mess, but makes for a dreary old landscape Laughing

http://www.s-araki.com/HP-E.htm#plane%20tree - a nice pic of our Plane Trees.

Tiger, thanks for the link to the pics! They are really beautiful trees. I must admit that the pink dogwood and the white and pink cherry trees are my ABSOLUTE favorite! They are just so gorgeous!

Is this something they do every year as far as giving the trees such a drastic pruning? Here in Los Angeles, our tree trimmers just got done pruning the daylights out of some trees around my apartment building - they do it because apparently its the time of year that trees need to be cut way back (before winter sets in) so that they bloom up big and beautiful in spring time, which they do every year like clockwork!

yup they do it every single year and they do burst forth in spring with lots of new shoots.. it just always makes me laugh how they race around and get it done before the leaves fall (and then they would have that mess to deal with too). Now Tokyo is full of naked trees. Shock
