So I just realized, since I haven't traveled in a good long while, I'm NOT going to be able to carry my toiletries like normal.
Usually, I carry all my stuff with me and ONLY check my clothes. Now due to the new restrictions, of course I won't get away with that.
My cleanser is a powder, and I'm planning on buying makeup removing wipes so I can leave my cleansing milk at home. Luckily I am waiting on my Ormonde Jayne sample programme (I'm going to wait to take them on the trip before trying them, I'll sample them during the holidays), my two .25oz. samples of IE 2MM exfoliating gel are on their way, as well as my sample of acne serum from the Best Bath Store (though I'm not sure how big this will be, I'm hoping to make it last).
I want to try to get a little over a week's worth of skincare stuff into my lil' baggie they allow each passenger (I'm paranoid of them losing my bag and never seeing my Decleor oil, balm, etc. ever again). I'm actually contemplating refilling alot of the little sample containers (that have labels) I have (other brands) with my usual stuff. At first I thought I might go just get travel containers from Wal-Mart, but then I realized that if they are restricting liquids like they are, they probably won't let some random chick carry on a bunch of plain, unmarked, 1oz. bottle with unknown liquids in them.
Or I'm wondering if I'd be better off purchasing a different line (like Ice Elements) and going with a "try me" kit that has 1oz cleanser, toner, etc.
Luckily, it says on the TSA (the US government office that regulates air travel) website that I can take solid lipsticks and stuff...so my Sephora Blockbuster palette, the only makeup stuff I'm taking back (plus a few BE eyeshadows that I have plus a lip balm), will be able to go in my carry-on and my Everday Minerals won't be a problem (I hope!!!).
My question is...for those of you that travel...how do you cope with this? I've gotta last for 10 days and I really would like to avoid checking any of my skincare stuff. I can buy shaving cream there, etc.
Am I being too ambitious???
Oh ye seasoned air travelers, please impart thy wisdom on a lost skincare/makeup junkie. O fie you liquid restrictions! |

Paris, you can use little travel bottles. They don't care that they are not labeled - it's the 1 quart baggie that they are most interested in. Now, I pack all of my makeup (dry stuff) in my carry on and only the important liquid stuff in a baggie. This works okay when I travel for longer time frames (still pack hair stuff, etc. in my checked luggage) but is crap for shorter stints. As I'm sure you know, there are a lot of liquid-y skin care/hair products that will over fill a 1 quart bag quickly, if you're trying to only carry on.
I wish, oh wish, that it was a 1 gallon option instead. I could manage that but not strictly the small one. That's just impossible for us makeup/skincare junkies.
In any event, you should be fine carrying your most precious products (what I do) and check the rest. |

So I know gels are under the 3oz requirement...what about balms? Lip balm is allowed, but I'm wondering if my Decleor would count...I don't think it would. Gosh darn it...this is tough!!!
I luckily have a tiny sample (from EDS) of the Angelique oil from Decleor, too much for me, so I'm going to refill it with my ylang ylang since I use so little of it everyday anyway. Pointless to cart the whole bottle (and waste my space in my baggy).
I wish the gallon bag was allowed too! Maybe if we have a note from a therapist saying "makeup junkie" they'll let us...haha. I almost feel like it's a psychological condition...I can't stop buying makeup and skincare!!! |

Unmarked travel size bottles are permitted, although sometimes you will get a misinformed TSA agent who will try to tell you otherwise. Asking for a supervisor should solve any problems, but I'm trying to use empty containers from other products when possible. I spent last night decanting things into smaller containers for my trip tomorrow and think I've gotten everything to fit, though I am a bit concerned about my hairspray, which is under 3 oz but labeled entirely in Japanese, so I'm not sure what they'll make of it.
As for the "balm" question, if it is solid consistency (lip stick or harder) they are supposed to allow it. Using that logic I have excluded my Stila Smudge Pot from my baggie in the past and have never had a problem with it. I travel a lot, and in my most recent experience it seems as though as long as you have a baggie out for them to look at, they're not really checking other carryons with the vigor you might expect. I always carry a printout of the most recent rules on what's allowed from the TSA website in case I run into an uninformed screener who gives me any problems.
Also, a colleague gave me a handy tip today that I'll pass along - when she has filled her baggie, she doesn't close it, but instead places it open-end-first into another 1 quart bag, giving her a little more space since she doesn't have to zip the bag shut. I'm not sure if this is technically allowed, but she's done it several times and not had a problem. |

This is a GREAT idea...I never thought of this!
Your Stila mention reminded me that I'll need to put my MAC paint in there...but I might leave my MAC fluidline out...to give more room.
I think I can make it work...I realized that I have several small containers that my Everyday Minerals samples came in...GREAT for putting my powder wash (even though it's allowed, I use so little, why carry the whole darn thing?), some of my Decleor balm, and once my Jonathan Dirt paste gets here, I'll fill a couple of those with that. This might actually be beneficial for me...I normally stuff everything into a carry-on and never end up using 3/4 of what I bring.
I love these ideas! A thread like this might be a good thing to "sticky" since we can trade our traveling tips. I can see it now Airline Approved Beauty for Skincare/Makeup Junkies

Good luck! I am reusing my Everyday Minerals sample containers as well! For a 5-day trip, my baggie is holding: sample size IS Clinical Super Serum, Active Serum, & HydraCool, Milk of Magnesia for mattifying, Kiehl's moisturizer for day, SkinCeuticals moisturizer for night, Eucerin hand cream, sample size Cellcosmet purifying gel and eye contour cream, Kiehl's Calendula toner, Henri Bendel Wild Fig body veil, sample size Bliss Magnolia Body Scrub, travel size toothpaste, 2 oz. contact lens solution, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, Stila mascara (trial size), Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, and a few lip glosses. Virtually everything that's not already sample size has been repackaged into the smallest possible container, so that it all fits.
Ever since I had my suitcase lost 3 times in 6 months a few years back, I've refused to check a bag for trips shorter than about 10 days - if I can't carry it on, I don't bring it! |

something *is* being overlooked here. the pure joy of the airline loosing your bag in which you packed all your beauty products... you finally have an excuse to go out and get all that stuff you've been lemming forever |
