Mabsy mentioned in an earlier post that she didn't know if anything would work to diminish dark undereye circles caused by a lack of sleep. I can attest that the PTR Power K DOES help even if the circles are caused by lack of sleep. My circles are caused by lack of sleep and are hereditary but I would say 90% of the time they are there b/c of lack of sleep. If I got enough sleep, I don't think I'd even need concealor. I figured this out just last weekend when, after having a very long work week AND being sick, I slept for 22 hours straight!! When I awoke, I looked 5 years younger!! A testament to the importance of sleep when it comes to beauty. Unfortunately, I usually average about 3-4 hrs. per night and sometimes stay up all night.
The products that work all have the same type of ingredients in them that do one of two things: either repair broken capillaries and improve circulation of blood under the eyes (reducing the appearance of veins and cappillaries) OR work, over time, to actually thicken the skin under the eyes - thereby diminishing the appearance of the circles which usually lurk under the VERY thin skin under the eye.
One of the ingredients that increase helps with circulation is Vitamin K - which PTR Power K has in it. Vitamin K reduces dark circles by aiding the healing of capillaries that leak blood in the eye area causing dark circles. It also aids in the fading of hyperpigmentation.
Among the products that aid in the thickening of the skin are Sorbitol, Horsechestnut Seed Extract and Ozokerite (I think these can all be classified as "ceramides". There are others besides the 3 I listed. I recently read that the combination of Horsechestnut Seed Extract and Vitamin K work far better than either of them alone. I read this on a site for a company called Urist Cosmetics. I don't know if anyone has heard of this brand. They seem to really concentrate on skin lightening products and similar type things.
I'm not sure which (if any) of the above ingredients Power K has but it works for me. I'm definitely going to check out the ingredients and see if I can figure out which of the active ingredients it contains. AND now that I know about the skin thickening issue, that might be one reason so many people use Power K for 2-3 weeks (even if they do crush the spheres) and don't notice anything. I imagine it takes a while for the skin to begin thickening. But over time, you can REALLY tell a difference.
To Mabsy - and everyone else who would like to comment on the dark circles under eyes issue: You mentioned in another post how much you like the PTR Power K for dark circles but said you're now using a Cellcosmet product and had also used a Phytomer product in the past. Which have you liked the best? I'm still using the Power K and really like it but am always looking to try something new. So - give us your comparison of the 3 brands you mentioned!!
Thanks! Nicole

Hi Nicole
OMG! You average 3-4 hours of sleep per night? I couldn't handle it - I LIKE my sleep
I think that in the long run if you really want to get rid of dark circles then you have to be getting enough sleep and eating healthy stuff too. Relying on creams will not solve your problems. The only type of cream that I could imagine working on dark circles regardless of the cause would be one that promises to increase the fat layer underneath your eyes - therefore hiding them. I tried one like that ages ago (some sort of dark green copper peptide cream) but the skin under my eyes didn't look any "fatter" Copper peptide is another ingredient that is supposed to increase the fat layer. Perhaps I should use it all over Anyways, PTR Power K's main ingredients are Vit K (circulation and fading bruises, veins etc) and Co-Q10. I'm not sure but I don't think that there are any ingredients that are supposed to increase the layer of fat. While PTR Power K has faded my dark circles considerably, I didn't notice any thickening - mind you I guess it would be fairly hard to notice that.
The problem that I had (for years) were really dark circles under my eyes combined with little veins too. These were there even if I got plenty of sleep. PTR Power K was the first cream in a long list of creams that really had a dramatic difference. I stopped using it when I got to the stage where I rarely had to use concealer. I probably would have kept using it if not for the fact that I couldn't use it on my eyelids. At that time I also tried a sample of the Cellcosmet and absolutely loved it. So I bought that and put the PTR Power K on hold. I will go back to it (I still have some left) if I my dark circles dare to come back - but the "situation" seems under control now I'm not sure if it's the Cellcosmet keeping them in check or if PTR simply reduced them and it stayed at that level.
I haven't actually tried the Phytomer eye cream, I think my recent post was pointing the person to a review of it (by Summertimegirl I think).

Hello Ladies,
wow, it looks like you really know a lot about skin. I was wondering if anyone has tried the Emergin C lighten-up for dark circles, I heard a lot of great things about it and was thinking of purchasing it. Any ideas?
Thanks

baggedcrx - My dark circles were pretty dark - but mostly in the inner corners under the eyes. They were a beautiful bluey purpley colour Put it this way, I'd always get comments like "late night last night?", "not feeling a 100%?" even if I had enough sleep and was feeling fine.
I'm not sure about PTR Power K samples. I bought the cream based purely on reviews and recommendations from other people - I didn't actually try it prior to buying. It is fairly pricey though, so it would be a good idea to get a sample and make sure that you don't have any reactions to it. Don't expect any results from using a sample though - it takes a good few weeks.
glow - sorry, haven't tried the Emergin C. But I'd love to hear about it if you do

Glow - I think it is worth the money but I can't guarantee you'll get the same results as me. However, my circles were pretty bad. If you decide to try it, just make sure you put the amount you use in the palm of your hand first and crush all the blue spheres before you apply it to the eye contour. Also- it takes 3 to 4 weeks to see results. I think this is because it thickens the skin under the eyes and obviously that is not going to happen overnight. For that reason, I wouldn't depend on a sample.
Now that I've done some research and know basically what ingredients cause these type of products to be effective, I've been thinking about doing a little research into a cheaper product with the same necessary ingredients. I'll let the board know what I find. The necessary ingredients are:
Vitamin K - a MUST
Horsechesnut seed extract - a MUST
(PTR Power K Eye rescue has both of these)
Also look for products containing Sorbitol and Ozokerite (I think these can both be classified as "ceramides". There are others besides the 4 I listed. I recently read that the combination of Horsechestnut Seed Extract and Vitamin K work far better than either of them alone. I read this on a site for a company called Urist Cosmetics. That site has some good information about this issue: www.urist.com
There is also some great info. out on the web about the ingredients you need to look for in these types of products. LIke I said, I'm going to check into it. I'll report back to the forum of course on my findings.

...Quick Kitchen Fixes
If unprepared for under eye bagginess and the dark circles that inevitably follow, try a quick fix straight out of the kitchen. Moist cool tea bags (the caffeinated ones) rapidly reduce swelling. The tannins in the tea help reduce the swelling by reducing inflammation. And caffeine draws water from the skin helping deflate puffiness.
Another solution is in the vegetable crisper…cool cucumbers. Enzymes contained in cucumber slices reduce tissue inflammation, shrinking bags and erasing unbecoming shadows. Keep these on hand for those little life emergencies like when your kids have kept you up all night or you need to look your best for that special event. They´re temporary, but do work!" Much more here: Dark circles under eyes. |

Hi Fantasia
I tend to use a concealer brush with it (Laura Mercier secret camouflage in my case). I use the lighter colour under my eyes when necessary, and also use the pinker colour over some visible veins.
The concealer is nice and creamy so it's easy to blend. After I apply it with a brush I gently tap it in to blend it.

Fantasia - glad to hear it! It's one of my faves, it's so creamy and easy to blend!
Reema - Welcome to the forum! So far I've found that the Peter Thomas Roth Power K Eye Rescue has worked best for me. Keep in mind that different people will get different results with different products. There's been a lot of talk about dark circles on this forum lately and different products were discussed. If you're interested in reading the product reviews then do a search (upper right hand corner of this page) for "dark circles".
