Anybody can tell me how to choose a reliable/good orthodontist?

My dentist has recommended one but I want to know more before I go.

Please PM me if you had a good choice in Vancouver, Richmond or Burnaby. Much appreciated.

To: Canadiangirl,

Thank you for PM me.

Another question:
If the Orthodontist does not belong to the Association of Orthodontist, I mean not a member, is that OK?

I'm not sure... my instincts would tell me no, that's not OK. Perhaps try calling the Association and ask them what it means to be a member and if someone is not, how important that is.

You also might try googling potential orthodontists. I've done that with doctors in the past when I have no clue about who to go to. Sometimes you can find out info about them that can help you make a decision.

Hi,
As long as he is registered with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia as a practicing Dentist it is fine. You are not legally required to be an orthodontist to practice orthodontics. Many regular dentist out there do this and belong to "orthodontic study clubs" at UBC.

These are dentists who do not want to go to school for an extra 2 years but are interested in practicing orthodonitics on the side. The good thing about this is that your dentist will review your case with about 10 or more other dentists and orthodontists to make the best treatment plan for you, and these same dentists and orthodontist will go over your case every month or so during the study club and make sure that everything is on track. The bad thing is that they may not have that much experience and it may take longer for the whole procedure.

I have worked with an orthodontist and a regular dentist practicing orthodontics on the side. Both were great. Either route you go, make sure that you get your whole treatment plan and cost in writing- a sort of a contract.

In either case if something goes wrong you can make a complaint against any orthodontist or dentist at the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, beleive me these complaints do not go unheard.

HTH!

I've been to 2 orthodontists. The first one I picked because his office was this really cool old house. (I was 19 picking it by myself, but still, pretty dumb! Laughing ) I went to one appointment with him and got my records done, and I just didn't get a good feeling about him. So I decided to get a second opinion, and this time went to the guy that did everyone's braces in junior high. I liked him much better, and asked for my records (that I paid for) to be transfered over to the new guy. The first orthodontist threw a big fit, and I realized I had made the right decision. You have to think about the fact that this person will be in your life for YEARS, and every few weeks for a few years. You end up spending a lot of time at their office, and their "chairside manner" is important. I'm 24 now, and I have an appointment with my orthodontist tomorrow (a retainer check). He still sees me every 6 months or so, and I haven't had to pay a penny since I finished paying off the original amount he quoted me. So I guess what I'm trying to say is to get recommendations from people and also go with your gut when you meet them (and their staff). Also, I think it's a good idea to find one who is a member of whatever organization you have up there. Hope my rambling helps a little! Smile

If you are looking to get invisalign braces, you should make sure they have a lot of experience with them.
