Hi all,
I just found out that my hair has been falling out due to some medication. I have now stopped the medication, and of course am anxiously awaiting new hair growth.
The problem is, my dirty blonde roots are starting to show (my hair is pale blonde with dirty blonde being my natural color). I am scared to get my roots touched up blonde in case more hair falls out.
I was thinking of dying my whole hair dark brown (like Cameron Diaz/one of the Olsen twins) but am afraid again that more hair will fall out, or my hair will look even more sparse being dark (in contrast with my scalp).
I have to wait about 1-3 months before any new hair starts growing in, but I really can't keep my hair color like this for that long.
In your opinion, what can I do?
Thanks! |

I would agree with you that the darker color will make your hair volume appear more sparse. I lost all of my hair when I had chemo. When it barely started growing back in, it was very fine. So, at my first hair appointment in a year, my hairdresser trimmed me up really nice so it didn't look sloppy. It looked very closely cropped, but it actually looked like a cute style, albeit way short. So, I think short would help. And also, she dyed it a fun color. It was like papaya, kind of orange. Looked gorgeous, and I cried right there cuz I hadn't looked so pretty in a long time. Maybe shorter, and a fun color? |

If you're afraid of dying your hair will cause more demage to your hair, you may want to try the products without harsh chemicals, such as Herbatint. Another better choice will be Henna, it's 100% natural (no chemcials) but the color will only last for 4-6 weeks. Rainbow Henna is one of the brands. |

Aha! that is the kind of thing I'm looking for - maybe I will try that. Is it a do-it-yourself kind of thing? (the Herbatint).
PS - Has anyone had massive amounts of hair fall out after getting their hair dyed? Like, even to make your scalp start to show through? |

There are different levels of dye permanence. Maybe try the one that you'd have to touch up or redo every couple weeks? It's gentle. |

I agree that the henna or more gentle color option might work best, but also wanted to throw out another idea. It sounds like our hair color is similar, and I don't love my natural color but also am lazy about getting my hair colored.
The solution that has worked well for me is that instead of coloring my entire hair, my hairstylist just weaves in highlights & lowlights. This would help bring some of your darker blonde through to the ends as well as having some of the lighter color (that's currently on your ends) up to your roots. I only have to color my hair a few times a year doing this, and the color looks good and the growout is very natural looking.
Anyway, I just thought this might be another option for you, as so little of your hair is actually foiled with color that it would reduce the damage, but it still gives a big impact.
Good luck with whatever you decide on! |

i agree with the henna, but stay away from Rainbow Henna. It's awful stuff. just buy body quality henna and mix it with lemon juice and apply. you will get better color, and conditioning, as henna is healthy for the hair and scalp.
there's tons of information on this page on henna including before and after pictures of people who have hennaed:

I was going to suggest the same thing marmurl did - highlights & lowlights. In addition to not having all the hair colored & easier growout, the color usually doesn't go all the way to the scalp, so there's less color product on the scalp to irritate it.
Good luck & hope it reverses itself soon... |

Henna, I think is actually good for your hair, and it doesnt have to be red, I think if you add chamomile tea and a dash of turmeric or lemon you can get blond - ish results?
the Hennaforhair site has loads of info, there are some real henna heads out there, who experiment with all sorts of concoctions.
It might be worth looking on the LongHairCommunity forum, too - they have some very knowledgeable women there about these matters, and how best to condition falling hair. |

I have the same problem. My hair fall out a lot due to a medication I was on. I stopped the med a while ago but the growing back process is very slow. I talked to my hair stylist about it and she recommended using Natural colouring without chemical e.g., Aveda line. Because its "natural", I think the colour can only go darker instead of lighter. I hope this helps. |

Hi wild cat.
Have you tried the Aveda line eventually? What is the result? |

my hair was actually reaaaally damaged (straight perm, died it like 7 times, bleached streaks) to the point where i didn't even want to shampoo my hair anymore.. but i just couldn't live with all the different shades on my head. so i went to sallys and bought demi-color. its a gloss and won't damage your hair - at least to the extent of hairdyes. my pair was so damaged that it actually absorbed a lot of the pigments into the shaft.. so if you do decide to do it, go for a much lighter color because it comes out darker than u'd expect it to.. and if ur hair is really damaged then a lot of the pigment will actually be absorbed by your hair if you do it multiple times (since it is very temporary).. but i love it and has saved my hair and now its back to growing out healthy. |
