I'm doing a half-face test with a different retinol, and I don't know whether to stop using it asap or trudge on. I have redness, tiny bumps like hives, extreme drying an flaking, itchiness, pain from tightness, and slight swelling (only noticable to me). I've been using it 5 days now. It may be better today than it was yesterday. I'm not sure. It the dreaded reaction that you just have to work through? I have never reacted to retinol before, so I thought I should ask in case it's an allergic reaction.
On the plus side, the other side of my face looks lovely in comparison. |

well, I don't want to tell you it's normal in case you are having a reaction...but yeah, all those things can happen. Have you considered just using it every other night at first, or trying short contact therapy? |

Thanks!! I thought about trying one of those methods, but if it seems normal, I think I'm going to work through it unless it gets worse. I guess I'll see what it does in the next couple of days. Luckily, I'm at home the rest of the week. |

Tosca redness, dryness, flaking and even slight swelling are things that you might go through starting a retinoid or retinol and they should go away eventually. The hives DOES NOT sound like a normal reaction. Are you the one that is trying a 1% retinol versus GC9? If so the small amount of extra retinol should not cause most of the problems that you mention. I am thinking allergic reaction.... |

oh no! looks like I gave bad advice. yeah, hives are not good...I guess I thought you just meant bumps. Listen to the others, don't send yourself into allergic shock or something. |

Yeah, that's me. 1% instead of GC level 9. I was really surprised that there was that much difference. I might have to call this test off! They do look some better today, though.
No worries, Waffle. You are in no way responsible! |

Tosca were you using the Skinceuticles 1% Retinol Night Cream? There are so many ingredients in that, I really wouldn't be surprised if one of them is the cause of your problem. Maybe after your skin calms down you can try a different brand of retinol or if you like the GC9 you could stick with that. Other ingredients being equal 0.9% is IMO about the same as using 1%. The extra 0.1% is really small when you think about it!! |

True! It's a very small difference. I do really like the GC 9, so I may just go back to that after my face goes back to normal. I just couldn't resist trying something different. |
