Hi everyone!I received this email from my sister, just thought I'd share this info with you all.
Something to consider next time you go shopping for lipstick......
This comes from someone who works in the breast cancer unit at Mt.Sinai
Hospital, in Toronto.
From: Dr. Nahid Neman
If there is a female you care anything about, share this with her. I
did!!!!! I am also sharing this with the males on my email list,
because
they need to tell the females THEY care about as well! Recently a lipstick brand called "Red Earth" decreased their prices from $67 to $9.90.
It contained lead. Lead is a chemical which causes cancer. The lipstick
Brands that contain lead are:
1. CHRISTIAN DIOR
2. LANCOME
3. CLINIQUE
4. Y.S.L
5. ESTEE LAUDER
6. SHISEIDO
7. RED EARTH (Lip Gloss)
8. CHANEL (Lip Conditioner)
9. MARKET AMERICA-MOTNES LIPSTICK.
The higher the lead content, the greater the chance of causing cancer.
After doing a test on lipsticks, it was found that the Y.S.L. lipstick
contained the most amount of lead. Watch out for those lipsticks
which
are supposed to stay longer. If your lipstick stays longer, it is
because
of the higher content of lead.
Here is the test you can do yourself:
1. Put some lipstick on your hand.
2. Use a Gold ring to scratch on the lipstick. 3. If the lipstick colour
changes to black, then you know the lipstick contains lead.
Please send this information to all your girlfriends, wives and
female
family members.
This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer, especially breast cancer. |

Sounds rather strange. Red Earth is a comparatively low priced range. I can't imagine their lipstick (or anything else) selling for $67.
Although I don't doubt that many lipsticks contain all sorts of "undesirable" ingredients. |

That does it! I'm switching my lip colors entirely over to carekate's lush lips and 100% Pure's fruit-based vitamin E glosses! |

I'm relieved to hear that this is just an urban legend, whew! Even so, I still feel better about using lip products with fewer chemicals and nasties... |

Well now I am confused and worried about my lipstick.
Found this
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/phs13.html#bookmark03
Quite comprehensive, so if you are an adult and are healthy you should eliminate it. If you are a child not so you only eliminate a certain amount....
I think the lipsticks will be at a safe level, you probably inhale more in rush hour....could be wrong tho. Will watch this thread. |

Yep...definitely a hoax...here's another article:
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_lead_in_lipstick.htm
ETA: In one of the original emails for this hoax, the price is HK$67 to HK$9.9
it's been changed to USD over the years... |

*laughs* well it is nice to see this little myth going around.
Still given goodness knows what in most commercial lipsticks and the brilliance of the more DIY ones (such as CareKate's) why not switch to the latter.
In my case, given how much lipstick I eat (and you guys know what I mean!), better safe than sorry. |

It's reported Dr.Hauschka's lipstick and foundation has no any lead and harmful things. |

Definitely a hoax! Had this one 3 or 4 times myself over the years. I put it right up there with the deoderant causing breast cancer myth! All fear mongering with no scientific basis to them! |

I think the issue about toxicity of the chemicals used in skin care and makeup (and food and air and ..) is a lot more complex.
I would highly recommend a book by Dr. Sherry A. Rogers "Detoxify or Die".
She also talks about infra red saunas, and many other things. She ia a practicing MD, who specializes in Enviromental Medicine (apparently there is such medical specialty).
It is not expensive and is very informative.

Thanks for the book info sigma, I'll order that one for xmas for a few folks - looks exactly perfect and will obviously explain this stuff far better than I can.
My folks are using the foot detox pads but I'm not sure they really get why it's a good idea... |

Yes, I have read about this myth years ago. I used Carekate's lush lips (I think it is the balm) recently and liked although the tint is very light. My natural lip colour is quite dark, so Carrie if you have one that would suit darker lips, I am interested. |

Ninetynine - have you posted your Q to one of Carekate's lip balm reviews? she has a list of colors and if you send her a color swatch ... she's working on more. |
