I really want to change my haircolor. I would love to do it myself or use something natural. I know that for blondes they can use natural things like lemon, chamomile and the sun etc. for subtle highlights. Although my hair is a flat light brown. I was blonde as a kid and it suits me well. I can't really go blonde though unless I bleached my hair and got highlights, which I've done before and is a LOT of maintenance and is expensive and very damaging to the hair. So really I need darker and richer. I'm just sick of the color, it's flat and boring. I really like the look of darker brunettes with a deep dark base with lighter rich golden brown highlights on top of it.
My base color is not dark enough for that though. Can I achieve that kind of effect through lowlights? I'm thinking no cause the darker color would have to be all over the base/roots, not just pieces of darker color.
I'd like to at least deepen and get a darker/richer and warmer brown color. Yet if I do it myself with Henna, would it just be flat all over color? How do I get the multi-tone depth of color at home? Or do I HAVE to go to a salon to get that? I want low maintenance though and natural products, so I'd prefer no salon at all.
My final question is, how do you all decide on what color to color your hair? I'm having the hardest time knowing what will look best on me. Thanks.  |

As for choosing what color, if you're cool-toned, you're supposed to go for colors with 'ash' in the name, and if you're warmer, you go for colors that are 'golden.' Usually you can tell just by looking at your hair, and seeing what sort of color it reflects. A professional would be better at judging that sort of thing, though. But, you know, I've also heard if it's done right, anyone can carry off any color.
I really would suggest going to a stylist and telling them what you have in mind. What you're describing, I think, would be acheived only by some sort of chemical processing. There are semi-permanent haircolors that won't damage your hair. And usually they won't charge you an arm and a leg if you just want one color. I know some people who will do their base color at home and then go to the salon to get professional highlighting or lowlighting done.
