December 5, 2006 — ALLURE offers plenty of advice to its readers, but here’s some for the beauty book’s future staffers: Don’t hawk products on eBay that were sent to the magazine for editorial use.
Last week, assistant editor Molly Friedman was fired for selling beauty supplies that had been sent to Allure editors. Friedman had been working there for almost a year and was very recently promoted from her editorial assistant position. “She was asking makeup companies to send her products that hadn’t hit stores yet, and she was selling them on eBay instead of putting them in the magazine,” said our insider. “She’s pretty much banned from Condé Nast for life.”
Before joining the Allure team under Editor in Chief Linda Wells, Friedman worked for Absolute magazine. Another source familiar with the situation asked, “How can she do this? You think of Allure - they are the beauty magazine. It’s pretty shocking.” Friedman could not be reached.

humph, well I am appalled by this news! You'd think that it's already amazing that she's receiving free and unreleased beauty products to try , but she has to sell them? |

There is always something behind sellers selling so much of those products. We always wonder how they get their hands on all this stuff. ESPECIALLY samples. You know employees stealing stuff and then selling it on ebay |

Talk about a product pig. I wonder if her eBay money was worth bagging her career over. She may have to enter the Product Pig Protection Program and change her name to get another decent job in the field. |

What a knob. How did she ever get promoted? Makes you wonder sometimes. |

I have never purchased from Ebay because I could never quite trust the sellers. I guess they aren't all bad but I don't like what she is doing. |

I find it amazing that people with good (paying) jobs try to find ways to make a few extra bucks ... then get busted. Is it really worth it? |

Talk about a bad descision. Some people just don't think through their actions very clearly. It's too bad her WHOLE career is ruined because of it. That was a plum job that she had to work very hard for too. |

Isn't that the truth...It is amazing the risk that people will take for $$$$...She cooked her career for sure - she doesn't have any sort of celeb status or charismatic persona that can save her from this...she kicked herself off of her own ladder...amazing....on a related note: I've always wondered about how these editors decide what is and isn't fabulous about a product...Do the editors really just "choose" their favourites or are they "bought" into their decisions? What do you think?

I have a pretty strong feeling that most of the items hyped by beauty editors are hyped merely because a company has bought a lot of advertising space in the magazine. Allure does this all the time. They also have such a volume of stuff to sift through that they end up writing up the most advertised ones. |

I NEVER go buy something (anymore...) based off of a beauty magazine review. I always have checked MUA, or even just googled reviews for the product, since joining EDS I search on here as well.
I've fallen too many times for hyped-up products in Marie Claire, Allure, Cosmo, etc. Never again!
It's funny how MUCH I research now before spending money on any skincare or makeup...sometimes to the point of I don't want it anymore! |

I'm with you, Paris! In years before I totally fell for the hype in magazines, and I wasted a lot of money! Thank goodness I found EDS! |

Second that. She's going to have to change her name and go into a different line of work ... her actions show such a total lack of integrity. Not a good message to send to a potential new employer ... if she ever finds one. |

She so deserves it. It's just insane how some people are willing to risk their careers for some extra cash on ebay. Actually, I know quite a few places in Bangkok where you can buy full-sized products that were meant to be testers at the counter. I was told each counter's given a quota of products as testers, so the SAs just sell them off to shops for cheap prices. |
