Just wondering if getting it in prescription products is still the only way to go.

Hydroquinone has not been banned....yet. It is under review by the FDA and is currently in a phase that asks for questions and comments from the general public, from formulators, from cosmetic companies, from doctors etc. It is up to the people who like using hydroquinone to argue positively for keeping hydroquinone as a basic ingredient in cosmetics. If no good argument is presented, then chances are the FDA could ban its use in general cosmetics and keep it as a prescription only material, or even worse, ban it all together. So, right now you can still get products with hydroquinone, but that might not be the case for long. It all depends on how quickly the FDA acts on this subject.

I think right now in the States you can buy products with up to 2% HQ OTC and anything higher is prescription-strength (usually 4% is what you get then, unless you have a derm who blends their own and makes a higher percentage). HTH.

That was my understanding too (what fifi said). Whatever you do, don't get any stuff with 20% or something from Ebay..from my understanding it's as different from 2% as rye whiskey is different from rye bread..! It's stuff that strong that led to people in the UK getting patches damage etc so the authorities made it illegal (though they were buying it from markets or asian shops rather than say Boots) they did a broad brush ban.

Yes been banned for a while. I had to get my PTR lightening lotion containing 2% HQ from EDS (I only knew it existed from the PTR site as clearly had not seen it here). saying that' I only used it a few times, layering products is too much of a faff for me.

I think that must have happened while I was away, it completely slipped by me. Prices are better overseas anyway - I have ordered some Glyquin from EDS which has 4% HQ to try to encourage some of my more stubborn dark patches to disappear. I've used it before a few years ago and it did help a bit although not hugely, so I'm looking forward to receiving that when my order arrives. It must have cost double when I bought it in the States though and that was a few years ago.
