I turned 40 this year and decided to try botox for the first time. Booked my appt and had it done with my derm whom I trust completely and have gone to forever. Left her office completely thrilled with how great I looked and couldnt wait for the full results to be seen within two weeks.
After the fifth day I noticed my eyes looked slightly swollen and puffy. I also felt a funny pressure as if something was pushing my eyebrows downward. On day six my upper eye and brow area became even puffier looking and it looked like I was scowling.
Called my derm and she told me to come in right away so off I went for the 3 hour drive each way. Got to her office and she knew immediately what had gone wrong.
I dont know the techncial terms but the basics of what happened are that we have safe zones as to where botox is injected. One person in about 100,000 has a smaller safe zone and I was one of the lucky ones. It had ended up relaxing the muscles that keep our eyebrows in place.
For six weeks I ended up looking like I was scowling all the time and my eyes were puffy.
Yes I did it again after and had great results.

It sounds like the botox was placed in the wrong muscle(S). I had that happen one time by a new injector. She had to go back and place it higher up to help raise the eybrow after 2 weeks. I looked like an angry cat. Try some Naphcon A eye drops, it helps relax the eye area faster. Also, make a report to the botox customer care so they can follow up on your case. |

Hi Annie, There was nothing that could be done. I did go to a second derm and was told that it was an honest mistake. They also gave me the right technical terms at the time and I researched it. They were both telling me the truth and it wasnt injected wrong. Wish there was somethingthat could have been done I looked so pissed off all the time.

You are brave! I don't know if I would dare to try again if it's bad the first time. My family doctor does Botox but I have not asked her about it. I am just too afraid of needles! How often do you have to have it done? How much improvement do you get? |

If I wasn't afraid of it before, I am now. Thanks goodness the bad effects wore off for you. |

Well I am glad the next time was better. Same for me, once it wore off I was game to go again. The eye drops were a recommendation of the allergen company and they did help. But that scowl is ferocious with the swelling, and I kept saying that "my allergies were acting up" because explaining the botox failure sounded so vain! |

That's a great excuse!
Thanks for sharing your experience, you were so brave to try it again! Glad to hear your results were great. Are you planning on getting it again? |

Oh Sherri, you poor thing! I've had botox a few times now and always worry about something like this as I know it can happen! Glad at least it didn't last too long for you, although it must have been awful. I've kind of given up on botox for the time being as I have very strong frown muscles and a short forehead, and it takes a really skilled practitioner to get a good result on me. My derm in Florida had it down pat, but I've only tried once since I came back to the UK and the results weren't great for such an expensive procedure (well, it is compared to the States anyway). I've now got a fringe (bangs) instead! |

Hi,
The only reason I had it again was my derm was so upset that she gave it to me for next to nothing. She was truly horrified that it had happened to me . It was her that suggested I go see someone else of my choosing so that I would know it wasnt her error.
The second time she did it I was beyond thrilled with the results and now have it done every three to four months.
The embarassing part of my story is that it did happen to me the second time but entirely my own stupidity.
When it was time for my fourth treatment I couldnt get in to my regular derm as quickly as I wanted(spoiled brat). I had to wait three weeks heaven forbid lol. I went elsewhere and the same thing happened to me as my first experience. It was actually even worse and the derm that did it barely batted an eye over it.
I was so mad at myself for not waiting and had nobody to blame by myself . Knowing I was high risk was beyond stupid and shows what a spoiled brat I am.
Even with two bad experiences I am a botox junkie now and love how it makes me look and feel.

Your disaster was due to the same reason as mine. My derm couldn't fit me in so I went to someone else, (who does my facials and restylane from time to time) and she just didn't put in the same amount in the same place. Good botox in the glabellar (the 11's) can make your eyes look open and well rested, bad placement makes you have that scowl because it lowers the front part of your eyebrows while lifting the back. The people at Allergen (the Botox makers) in customer service said it is EXTREMELY common. All in all, I'll continue on as well when I need it. |

This is all very interesting. I had Botox in early September. I hadn't had it in a few years, but went to the same plastic surgeon I've gone to before. I noticed his technique was a bit different this time -- he injected me farther out on the sides of my forehead than before, and up higher too -- not just between my brows [and out a little bit] like in the past. This resulted in more of an upward tilt of my outer brows than I previously experienced. It wasn't a dramatic difference, but a girlfriend who's always very "candid" mentioned it to me that she noticed.
On the other hand, my entire forehead was extremely smooth this time around, and migraine headaches were more effectively kept at bay. As long as my brows don't end up looking like Jack Nicholson's in "The Shining", I think I may prefer the newer technique for the headache relief alone. But for those who don't want the tilt of their brows to change at all, I wonder if it would help if injections didn't extend as far laterally? |

Sherri I'm so sorry you had a bad experience but impressed w/ your courage (vanity?!!) to go again I've had it done about 5 times by the most sought after cosmetic surgeon in the city. I'm thrilled with the results - smooth forehead but still a little movement. The $500 cost every 4 mos is still hard to justify but it makes me feel really good about myself |

Try 850.00 everytime. Guess it goes with living in the boonies and not having a lot for options as to competion.

M April-My injector doesn't go out very far only about an inch from the middle of the glabellar and it lifts the eye up near the nose bridge, very natural. It runs about 175.00 to 225.00 here in Austin, Texas and lasts about 6-7 months for me. |

OMG $175 - $850 for Botox?! How can that range be possible? I'm moving to Texas |

Hi AnnieR - I pay about $250. It's still working from when I had it done in September, but I think I recall you saying in the past that regular injections result in longer-term effectiveness. I just may keep it up for that reason!
I'd probably prefer to have it just between my brows for the way it looks, but my lines aren't so bad and I have it done as much for the headache relief as anything else. |

It is a lot more effective for long-term use. I find I don't squint my eyes as much when I am tired, as the Botox retrained my muscles to relax after a while. It did take several times of having it done to get them retrained though. I now need fewer units of material and I can go longer in between. My doc said some people react just the opposite and have to have more units each time as they develop a resistance. |

Botox questions:
How did you decide on your specialist? Is one type of doctor better than another?
Just curious...I am 45 and thinking about it. |

I guess I have been very lucky because I have not experienced anything bad with my injections.
I wish I did not have to get them and if I did it purely for cosmetic, I think I would get them only for an eyebrow lift. It really shapes my face nicely but it is one of those things that people do not notice but at the same time, they notice something different but did not know what and to this day, they still don't.
I have no choice to get them between my brows because I am an emotional type of person and it strengthen my muscles there. I found people would comment or have a changed attitude towards me and it affected negatively professionally and in my personal life. Since my very first injection, I noticed a very quick change on how people treated me and they probably thought I had a better attitude. I am disappointed that it has come to that point and this is my very deep secret from people I know. |

I'm 57 and have been fascinated with the idea of Botox treatments. Cost is an issue for me BUT safety is first.
I found this a very informative thread! |

I go again tomorrow at 3:20 and have to admit to be extremely nervous. It has happened twice and could very easily end up happening again. The worst will be the wait after, both times it took 5-7 days to show up.
