There's a little article about pomegranate in the March issue of Allure (that I finally got around to going through Smile). It's actually quite interesting. I remember reading about pomegranate and it's "powers" about a year ago and subsequently stocking up on some Murad pomegranate products. But the Allure article mentions an interesting study that I haven't heard of before (I might have to search and find out more info about it).

The article essentially says that studies (on mice) have shown that the application of pomegranate prevents skin cancer. A derm at the Univ of Wisconsin did a study whereby skin cancer was induced in mice (poor little squeaks! Sad ) and then some of them were treated with an application of pomegranate. After 16 weeks, only 30% of the mice that were treated with the pomegranate had developed cancer, vs. 100% of the mice that were not treated. They also mention that the mice that had pomegranate applied before cancer was induced (with a chemical Crying or Very sad ) had significantly less inflammation and irregular cell growth than those that didn't have the pomegranate applied. The article also goes on to say that studies (though it doesn't reference any) have shown that the antioxidant activity of pomegranate is higher than that of red wine or green tea.

hmm I'd love to know how it compares to antioxidant activity of vitamin C....

Never tried any skin products infused w/ pomegranate, but love POM pomegranate juice. You would love the bottle, as I know you are a sucker for packaging!

hi girls,

that POM juice is unbelivable, it's really really good for you, especially for the skin. it's crazily expensive Surprised , in Canada runs at about $5 per bottle, but i think is totally worth it. It's one of the strongest anti oxidants out there and I try to stock up up and drink at least 4 bottles per week. I find the pure pomegrant has the best taste!

Omigosh it has been so long since I've posted! Sad It is good to be back. I just bought a bottle of POM the other day so imagine my delight to see this discussion! I read that Pomegranites are the new hot anti-oxidant but I hadn't thought of it's use in skin care products. Does anyone know a pomegranite based product that they would highly recommend?
ps: I think I'm spelling pomegranite wrong each time I mention it.

Hi Zazu! Welcome back!

I so want to try that juice Crying or Very sad

I think the only (or one of the very few) brand that make skincare with pomegranate extracts is Murad. They have a whole range. I hear that the cleanser is very nice (still haven't tried it though). Personally I only have the Murad Energizing Pomegranate Treatment (which is nice) and also the Murad Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer, SPF 15 which I really like.

I wonder if they're going to make an eye cream with it too. I'd so buy it! Embarassed

I just tried the P M juice, sort of like grape juice but a bit bitter (maybe it's better described as "tart")! I like it but I am a bit disappointed coz it is from concentrate; finishing one bottle gives you quite a bit of calories .. it's reaching 300 (dont remember the exact # Confused )

Also, as I stumbled into Body Bath and Work recently for a hand cream, I discovered that they now carry pomergranate facial scrab (maybe it's been a long time already). This is not a brand that I would choose though, I believe the use of pomergranate has drawn attention not only from the customers but also the cosmetic industry Laughing

I tried Murad energizing pomegranate cleaser and lotion. I brought it as an antioxidant kit. The cleanser is a foaming cleanser and it smell sweet, but I prefer to use L'occitane foaming cleaser.

Hi Mabsby, the POM juice is now being stocked by Safeway, in the fresh food section. I saw it in my local (Ocean Grove, VIC) last week.

There's a skincare line called Pomega5. If you google, you will find it. (They also make supplements you take internally.)

I've never used it. I did see a trial set advertised for $9.99.

hhm I heard that pomegranate is good for skin and helps to repair sun damage too. I'm taking a multivitamin that contains Pomegranate extract of 40%...

I guess it benefits to apply it toically too although I haven't tried it myself.

Please take care to the pomagrate juice - contains iron .I got too excited about it and had 2-3 bottles a week ..Hmm, actually it was like a bottle a day 3 times a week ..And blood tests came back with a higher percent of iron than normal.....I have to mention that I had a partial hysterectomy 12 years ago so I don't have period and I can't lost too much blood but still....Smile

talyta, it's interesting that Pomegranate juice is high in iron. I have iron deficiency so that might be my cure then! But on the other hand, I take a multivitamin that contains Pomegranate extract but still my iron is low...hhm hmm

The pomegranate extract that's in your multivitamin is probably the equivalent of a couple of drops of pomegranate juice.

My husband loves the POM juice but I'm too picky to try it Embarassed Anyway, a couple of makeups that contain pom are: Mineral Fusion, its packed with an antioxidant complex, pom, white and red tea and actually covers and wears well. Also, Estee Lauder (though not a fave of mine) has a new MMU that comes in a liquid and powder that contains pomegranate. I've been sampling the liquid for about a week now and I must say it has beautiful coverage and the perfect glowy finish. The downside is it doesn't last long. These are the only two I know of but I am sure more will be popping up soon!

Try the Pomegranate Seed oil. A couple of drops on skin at night. Save some money and go right to the source.

Keliu and Oriana,

That's a fabulous idea.

I know Hannah at SAS (skinactives.com) says pomegranate is very good for your skin, she carries both the oil AND a pomegranate extract. John at BA has the extract much cheaper: http://www.bulkactives.com/pomegranate.htm

I wonder what the difference in 'activity' between the oil and the extract is. Any ideas?

Good question. The Bulkactives website says the extract is: Assay: Ellagic Acid 40%, Polyphenols 78%. I thought Ellagic Acid was a Polyphenol. It would probably be a good idea to ask Hannah her opinion. The oil is definitely very versatile and easy to work with.

Quoted from my link above:

Pomegranate seed extract and juice have been popular lately for their anti-oxidant properties, and pomegranate seed oil is proving to be even more beneficial. Not only does pomegranate seed oil contain high levels of anti-oxidants that fight free radicals and skin aging, but the oil is also a potent source of punicic and ellagic acids.

Whether this is the gospel or not I don't know.

sorry to diverge this thread even further, but anyone make their own pomegranate juice??

i'm thinking of getting a juicer to make carrot juice, but i'm also thinking of other juices such as blueberry and pomegranate.
