Blech, I can't believe they'd do this, definetly lost a potential customer.
I know it's supposed to be funny and all, but it's just...I dunno maybe I'm in a bad mood
(Yes, I'm a gay male, and no I don't talk like that) |

no, agreed, they're trying to make us women feel "fabulous" by making them feel like we're hip with gay men. it's such bullsh*t.
but don't take offense -- if anything it's going to promote acceptance even if it's at the price of a stereotype. |

No, it's not funny. It's been done a million times before on t.v. and the fake "gay" banter is just that, fake. Don't let it bother you.
Isn't it like all gay men are portrayed as the same character on television? It is so ridiculous! |

Yeah, this kind of thing annoys the hell out of me too.
Makes me think of an incident I witnessed once in a straight bar, where a guy was hassling a woman and pulled out a knife. All the straight guys stood by and did nothing to help the poor girl, while my gay friend jumped in and “dealt with” the knife guy. Not saying all straight guys are wimps and all gay guys are bar brawlers, but that’s my point ... everyone is different but somehow all gay men in movies/TV are portrayed as mincing queens.
That’s my rant for the day LOL |

I agree, edenfield. But try to not let it bother you... when I see stuff like that it's like watching a silly cartoon -- it's nowhere near reality. |

I don't know any gay men who actually talk like that (unless they're playing it up for laughs).
Just ignore the advert, edenfield. I agree, though, it's pretty irritating. |

oh, isnt it a bit of a rip off of that makeover programme - wotsit called.. I cant rememember, where a team of gay guys re- do a straight guy's apartment and wardrobe for him? They sit around and talk like this, for the camera.
Cliched and silly stuff, but then arent all the sitcoms about families unrealistic about how families are, and depictions of women's conversations and friendships in the media isnt that hot, either... |

Yep, most of the gay male characters portrayed on tv are pretty stereotypical. It reminds me, actually, of the way African Americans were initially portrayed on television -- as either the maid or the minstrel. It took quite a long time before African Americans were portrayed as more multidimensional characters.
At the moment, it feels like it's fashionable and trendy for all tv shows to have a token gay male character. But the shows that portray gay males in the stereotypical fashion (Queer Eye, Sex in the City) have actually helped the gay community gain wider acceptance, it seems. As awful and unjust as it sounds, widespread acceptance of an alternative lifestyle does take time...
I think that acceptance for less-stereotypical gay characters is around the corner, though... |
