Long story short. I was diagnosed with a photosenitivity to the sun in my early 20's.
Apparently, I'm sensitive uva rays. Once I was diagnosed, I began using sunscreen. I could only use chemical ones, because I would get cystic acne with the physical sunblocks. In my later 20's to early 30's I started seeing a slight loss in volume around my face. I didn't think twice about it. I thought I was aging and pretty much accepted it. During the same time, I was using the Peter Thomas Roth sunscreen with avobenzone. Then in January of 05, at 32, I started seeing fine lines on the left side of my face and slight sagging around my mouth. Crying or Very sad I FREAKED OUT!!! I began using sunscreen with zinc in it: Obagi, Citrix, Skinceuticals...I began using Neova. I then, changed sunscreens and moved towards the Shiseido SPF 55. I used that until a couple of months ago and then moved onto the Bioderma. I liked the Bioderma but the little tubes began to get expensive moved onto the lotion and that just piles up on my face.I also thought it might be best for me to move back to a physical block.
So...this is my dilema...my face is aging quite rapidly. It was beginning to look better but lately, I see more lines. On the ciba sunscreen simulater Clinique SPF 40 had a PPD of 9.9. I used it today and I got sunburned. Rolling Eyes I've used the SVR, but it has a low amount of zinc in it. Does anyone know of a sunscreen that is a physical block and has a high amount of zinc in it? TIA

I haven't used this myself but have heard raves about Megan Gale sunscreens, her suncreens are based on Zinc Oxide and there are a few products to choose from in the range.

There are only 3 sunscreens that I have used where I can stay out in the sun in the middle of an Australian summer and not get burnt. They are Remergent SPF30, Kosmea SPF30 Moisturiser and Ego Sunsense Daily Face Matt Formula SPF30+. There are probably lots of others but I have used all of these and they work, have a matt finish and are also suitable for oily skin.

I use one called COTZ (Contains Only Titanium & Zinc) It's a 58spf, and I find it's the only sunscreen that doesn't irritate my eyes!

It's made by Fallene, and the website iswww.totalblock.com

I just reread your post, and you mentioned fine lines on the *left* side of your face.

Very interesting! Do you drive much during the day? Maybe sunlight coming in the car window has sundamaged the side of your face that gets more UV exposure! I just had my car windows and windshield tinted with the maximum UV protecting stuff, and noticed it cut down on the slight pink flush I was getting, despite tons of sunblock applied frequently.

Just a thought--maybe a totally irrelevant one!

skincarefreak -- if you haven't already, you should email Kathleen at http://www.skincarecentral.biz/skincare-contact.html. she's done quite a bit of sunscreen research (both american and euro products) and can probably help you.

Megan Gale apparently has the highest amount of Zinc you can buy it atwww.adorebeauty.com.au

Am curious, how long were you using sunscreen, and what SPF level, until you noticed the lines? Was a little confused by your post - are you more sensitive than normal to UV? Also why the need for sunscreen with zinc? The Euro chemical sunscreens have the highest PPD, much higher than physicals, if you can tolerate them (you said you were using chemical?)

In addtion to sunscreen how about using a wide brimmed hat to keep the sun away from your face ? How about tinting your car windows with an UVA filter ?

Skincarefreak, the SVR has a PPD rating of 20 (UVA), so I would definitely give this a try and see how your skin deals with it. Samples available from Kathleen at skincarecentral.biz.

Skincare,

I haven't tried it, but someone on here has forget exactly who, may have been TheresaL. The Glycolix ss which contains I believe 17% Zinc Oxide compared to others that only have about 5%-6% or so.

I may give that a whirl, although she didn't like it too much. Currently I'm using Bioderma Max Creme, but the whole free radicals issue is starting to scare me.

Heathercolorado, could you, please, give more details about UVA protection for car windows?

I drive into NYC for about an hour and am very concerned about exposure.

I do use and like SVR 50 B, since I was looking for high PPD and physical sunscreen. I order it from tubotica.

Lucy.

Wow! I just came on to take a look at this topic and I'm amazed at the responses!!! Thanks you guys! I truely appreciate each on of your responses!

Kalegr and FaithTruth : I am researching the Megan Gale sunscreens as I am posting. To answer some of your questions FaithTruth. I used sunscreen for about 11 years until I saw the lines. Yes, I am photosensitve to uva rays (it is a medical condition).Zinc is a physical block that is a good uva/uvb protectant. I need both. Furthermore, it's tried and true. I've used the Bioderma. I liked it but it bagan to get very pricey. I don't like the milk lait, because it looks awful. I can't get it to spread evenly.

Bushy: Thank you! I will look up those that you mentioned.

heathercolorado and Moochez: I have the COTZ by Fallene. I called the manufacturer. I was told that it only has 2% zinc in it. Yes, it is from driving. I did spurlge and put a clear tint on it. I was told that it was a very high uv protectant. It didn't help at all! As of now, my car is on it's last leg. I need to buy another one. Once I do, I'll place a darker tint on it.

marla and Poco: I have e-mailed Kathleen, and she has been gracious enough to help...many of times. I like the Bioderma cream with the tint, but I would use the cream in 2wks. It just got very pricey. The larger tube with the milk lait made my skin look like it was peeling something awful. It didn't go on smooth. I began using the SVR, but it only has 3% zinc. I'm not sure what the 3% thermopherol are. Please understand, the sunscreens she sells are very good, but my skin is very damaged and it needs a physical block. Poco, thank you for the Linda Sy's link! I will look at it.

ariesxtreme: Thank you! I will definately take a look at the Glycolix!

sigma: I have been using the svr.

Thank you all for your responses! I'm a little upset, because I've tried to protect my skin the best way possible. I've recently seen two new deep ice pick scars on the left side of my face. The lines look even deeper. Uggghh...I've waited 20 minutes in the morning...I've reapplied before the drive home. I've spent so much money on sunscreens...good sunscreens. I just feel like it's a losing battle. Crying or Very sad

Please note: I hope I'm not scaring anyone. The sunscreen that you've all mentioned are very good...especially Kathleens. I just have a medical condition. I feel safer with a physical block.

I also recommend Powder Base makeup by Merle Norman. It's a cream foundation that looks really nice on, and the first ingredient in it is zinc oxide. This product kept my face from frying in my youth when I used to sunbathe on the beach all day. At that time it used to bug me that I could get brown all over except for my face, which stayed strangely pale... Laughing

As far as tinting car windows is concerned, I thought it only blocked the UVB rays and not the UVA rays.

Kathleen at skincarecentral.biz knows about this as she had both her home and car windows tinted. She was fighting melasma so I think that there is protection from UVA rays or she wouldn't have bothered with it.

Okay, it maybe UVB rays. For some reason I heard it doesn't block one of the rays. I could be completely off base though.

Hi all,

ariesextreme: I read Theresa's review of the Glycolix. I've also read makeup alleys.http://www.makeupalley.com/product/showreview.asp/ItemID=83349/Topix_Glycolix_Elite_Sunscreen_SPF_30/Unlisted_Brand/Sunscreen/
I decided to try out the Glycolix.

sigma: I'll let you all know.

I've also ordered the Colorscience almost clear. It has 12% titanium and 12% zinc in it. I'll keep you guys posted.

ariesxtreme regular untinted glass blocks UVB but not UVA rays. Tinted glass will block UVA rays although the amount of UVA blocked depends on the product that you are using to do the tint.

aries and skincarefreak please post your experiences with the Glycolix. My main dislike was that the product balled up and did not seem to provide even coverage. Maybe it was due to some other product in my routine. Anyway I would love to hear how this works for you.

Hi Theresa,

I'm glad you posted. Out of curiosity, what moisturizer did you use when you used the Glycolix? My sunscreen would ball up when I used a serum instead of a lotion. What sunscreen are you using now?TIA

I hope I recall this correctly. I believe I was using Proheal (or ISC 15% C), Kanebo Silk Moisture Polish Essence and Kanebo Emulsion I. I switched to SkinMedica C since then so I wonder if I would have the same problem? I still have the Glycolix so I will give it a try someday.

Right now I am using the Sofina Rise UV Cut Milk SPF 24. I had been using the Sofina Perfect Lucent SPF 50+ but ran out and am waiting to get more that I ordered. Both of these Sofina's have ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and in all honestly I would prefer a sunscreen that has only physical filters. I also prefer zinc oxide over titanium dioxide because it does offer better UVA protection. I do have some concerns about ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and really feel that all zinc oixde offers better UVA protection than zinc oxide plus ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate but it seems difficult to find sunscreens that are all zinc oxide or mostly zinc oxide with some titanium dioxide....
