hi all!! i was wondering if i can get some advice on searching for the ultimate makeup primer. i've never used any primers before but i'm looking for something that would help make my skin appear smoother and more matte. also, can a primer cause you to break out? i did a search on EDS, and some of the ones that i'm interested in are smashbox's photofinish, ptr's mattifying gel and laura mercier's oil free primer. what would u all suggest for me?
(also, i wear mineral makeup.. if that makes a difference) Thanks in advance!! |

Hi, I have tried all 3. My favourite is the PTR. It gives a matte look. Also Clarins new one is excellent as well, hths.  |

| leaffie, I use mineral make up too. I used to use various silicone-based primers, but after a few days they all clogged my pores. Right now instead of a traditional primer, I use a light layer of Jurlique's Rose Silk dust under my mineral makeup. It makes my mineral make up go on more smoothly, has a mattifying effect, and best of all, it hasn't clogged a single pore! (Plus, my husband says when he kisses me I smell like roses...^-^) I've also tried carekate's lavender silk dust and to be honest, I think I like it even better than the Jurlique, so once I use up my Jurlique I'll be ordering from carekate. HTH! |

I'm with lipgloss doll but I'd take it a step further and say that IMHO the Clarins Perfecting Touch completely blows everything else out of the water - I love it! It wears beautifully under makeup and as a line diffuser it totally smokes Prescriptives Magic line eraser and any other primers I've tried. Beware though, cuz when it comes to primers - what might be an HG product for me or someone else ends up being the disaster of disasters for others....It is hard to say what will work for whom - the whole primer discussion (IMHO) is one where none of the regular rules apply -- some oily skins that you'd think wouldn't be able to tolerate Smashbox (for example) end up just loving it - while others break out like crazy...I think it really is one of those "you just gotta try them" products..try to get samples if you can!

My HG is Carekate's Silk Dust Powder. It's formulated after Jurlique's Silk Dust.
It absorbs oil better than other primers I've used, smells fantastic and leaves my skin soft (sometimes on the weekends I just use this and no makeup).
Smashbox makes a good primer too. I used to use a primer from PureLuxe but notice that many times it balls up on me. |

I am very excited to hear about the Silk dust as a primer. I have stopped looking for a primer because I have the same issue as manslayerliz
with clogged pores. I spent a lot trying different brands and had decided that primers weren't for me.
Would you recommend Carekate's Silk dust as the first one to try? Is there anything else besides the smell that stands out with Carekates? I do have to admit that the smell is a big selling point in her favor. Not sure I want to smell like roses every day. |

I also thought I should mention that carekate's version comes in several different scents, including citrus, lavender, etc, so you're sure to find one you like.^-^ Please keep us updated~! |

no no, no smashbox, I break out thanks to it.
I use laura mercier, regular one or oil free one. They both meet your requirement. It helps the foundation last long and keep a fresh look. Most of all, it is anti-oxidant primer, ^_^ |

the silk dust actually sounds quite interesting.. is there a difference between the rose one and the lavendar one from jurlique? also, where can i order Carekate's if i wanted to? And, laura mercier's primer has antioxidant properties too? Wow.. so many to choose from, what's a girl to do ? i guess i'll follow pudoodles advice and try to get some samples first!! |

Hi Leaffie! In theory the lavender silk dust is supposed to be better for oily skin, but really it just comes down to which scent you prefer. I have rose which I love, but I'll probably give lavender a try next because I love lavender too. If you are interested in trying carekate's you can send her a pm, but she only has limited internet access, so you may not get a response right away. HTH! |

I really like ModelCo's Face Base, I don't find it heavy or greasy & it leaves my skin soooo smooth. It's also not that expensive either.  |

SusieQ. I remember seeing this on one of those home shopping channels a while ago & was so tempted to purchase. The developer/mu artist said he created the product in response to the change in tv to high definition. My only concern was that it was a light lavender in color, if I remember correctly, and I am very tanned skin. Do you think this product would work for my complexion? Does Skinn give a glow, mattify, or just fill in lines? |

I bought Nars new makeup primer 2 weeks ago. It is my second foray into makeup primers after first trying Smashbox which broke me out pretty badly. This is Nars' second makeup primer, the one with SPF. It smooths out any flakies I have and my Alima MMU glides on like silk. No breakouts so far, just beautiful, flawless base for my foundation.

I agree with the others on Clarins Pefecting Touch. It's my favorite so far. If you want to try something comparable to Smashbox though, just head on over to your local drugstore and buy Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel in the feminine section. It's nearly the same feel as the Smashbox but is only around $7 USD for a 1.5 oz tube.

I've tried samples of the Smashbox primer. Feels greasy to me, as did the new (Shoppers Drugmart) Quo primer when I tested in on my hand.
Apparently, Face Atelier's Ultra Foundation is so awesome, that one doesn't require primer, at all. |

How does Clarins "perfecting touch" differ from their "Instant Smooth Perfecting touch"? Which I've heard raves about.
I've just discovered the concept of "primers" so I'm in search mode at the moment. |

Just thought I'd add a little something. There is a slight difference between a plain primer(prepares skin for make-up), and a mattifier (absorbs oil).
Products like Skinn's Orchid Gel and Benefit's Dr. Feelgood are great mattifiers for people with very oily skin. They allow you to put on your make-up without it sliding off, and are great in warm weather.
Primers, like Smashbox, are a little different. Beacause they are silicone based they they Do create a smooth surface for make-up to glide over, but I found it just too oily feeling and kind of weird. It is not one of my fav. products, and I can see where it might clog pores.
For anyone near a Sephora, they are great at giving samples so I would suggest trying a few different things there.
I really like the idea of the Jurlique and CareKate silk dust...something to check out! |

| Smashbox felt really greasy to me--and I have dry skin that soaks up everything. I really like Chanel's primer. It is light and doesn't feel like you put a "film" on your skin. |

I am using Avon anew primer right now. It's amazing!!!! You've got to check it out! It's so moisturizing and blending in so well with my Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, even better than LM's oil-free primer. The avon primer has some shiny elements that will make the makeup look more brilliant!
I also tried to mix the avon primer and the LM TM together before the application. It works even better! |
