Have been reading threads on Paris and London and it suddenly hit on me that I should start a new thread on travel.
Europe is my favarite continent. I have been to Italy( Rome, Florence & Venice), Greece ( Athen & the islands), Paris, UK (london, Edingburg and the Lake Area), Bathelona, Amsterdam. The most beautiful country i have to say is Italy. I would love to discover more of it, especially south part of the country.
France is my second favorite. London & the lake area is probablly the third.
For Western Canada, I have travelled to calgary and Banff National Park, for east canada i have been to Montreal and Quebec. they are both beautiful. but Banff is my favorite in Canada.
For US, I have only been to LA, San diego, Las Vagas, and New York. I love New York for shopping and musicals but won't considering living there.
For Asia, well i lived in China for many years and yet there are many gorgeous places i have yet to discover. Malaysia is the second country in Asia i have lived/visited.
In a nutshell, Italy wins my vote for the most beautiful country in the world. Of course I have never been to Australia/New Zealand and those islands such as Tahiti on pacific oceans. gosh i wish i can just quit working now and travel around the world without worrying about my income! |

Grace like you I've been just about everywhere except the Middle East, Asia and Oz, NZ. I lived in Italy for a year when I was younger and to this day it is my all time favourite country I went back last summer just to make sure the love affair was still hot and it was - in fact I want to retire in Italy! The most spectacular vista I've ever seen has to be Lake Louise right here in Alberta with the statue of Christ overlooking Rio being the 2nd IMO anyway |

Well, we haven't traveled extensively but would definitely like to return to {b]Singapore, Sitges (near Barcelona), Bruges[/b]
Planning on going to Fiji and Tahiti and know we'll love it there. In the U.S. it has to be Hawai'i. |

Great thread! I have also been a whole lot of places, but I think some of the most beautiful would be:
Istanbul: Amazingly beautiful - I was just there over Thanksgiving and it far exceeded my expectations. Standing in the square between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque and watching the sun set while listening to the call to prayer from all the mosques gave me goosebumps.
Paris: It's just a classic. Probably my favorite city anywhere.
Italy: So many beautiful places but the hiking around the Cinque Terre on the northern coast was stunning.
Seville: I spent 6 months living here as a student. It is a beautiful and spirited city - it's at its best in the spring, especially during the April Fair.
Kyoto: All the shrines!
Belize: Snorkeling in the marine reserve off Ambergris Caye is like swimming in an aquarium.
Northern Ireland: The Glens of Antrim and Giant's Causeway were so pretty, especially since there were virtually no other tourists!
And finally, in the U.S. (since I feel I should name at least one place from my own country... . Probably Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding bits of Montana and Wyoming, although Acadia National Park in Maine is also pretty.
P.S. Rjez - I also love Bruges! It is just the prettiest little town with all the canals. [/b] |

So many beautiful places in the world! Southern Europe is lovely, sort of soft and golden in the summer. China and Japan are so different, strange and facinating. Switzerland is breathtaking, like a gigant postcard! Same with the norwegian fjords, crisp, fresh and dramatic (but I'm maybe being biased here..)! |

Hmmmm....
London, Stratford-upon-Avon
Paris, Avignon and Provence
Ireland
Netherlands
HongKong
Vienna, Austria
Switzerland
Hawaii (3 islands)
Belize
Costa Rica, all over
Mexico- Puerto Vallarta, Zihuanteneho
British Columbia, all over
Arizona- Tucson & Sedona
The real stand-outs for me are Costa Rica, Vancouver Island (B.C.), and Arizona, for their natural beauty--completely different from oneanother, of course! |

OK, ruling out Australia (birthplace bias ), oOf countries I have been to I would say Switzerland hands down.
Of places I have been to, then Varenna on Lake Como in Italy is a no brainer. That place is so beautiful it makes you cry.
As for my home country, the most beautiful place would have to be the Whitsundays, hands down!
From my adopted country.. um.. well.. I cannot think of anywhere drop dead georgous at the moment...
And for somewhere I have NOT yet been...I am keen to get into some of those NZ mountains and sounds though!! They look superbly beautiful.
My choices were drawn from various travels to:
Europe: France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, England
Asia: Hong Kong, Japan
Oceania/Pacific: Guam, Australia, Tahiti, Bora Bora
USA: NY, FL, CO, NV, CA
Canada: BC, Yukon, ON |

Difficult ! There is just too much of them (and one has too little time to see them all…).
The loveliest time of my life i had in OZ (heading southwards the east coast from Port Douglas to Sydney). Though here and there I need a buzz of a city but I’m very much a nature-loving person.
I love Brazil, an absolutely gorgeous country, amazing (Iguazu, Pantanal, Bahia, …).
I’ve never been in Asia (except Singapore and Bangkok).
I love England (Cotswolds, Devon, the gardens in Kent ) and Scotland, of course London (but my native Londoner friends maintain this is only because I’ve never had to live there for longer…). Not to mentioned my beloved Channel Islands…
Now that I’m thinking about, there is almost everywhere something I liked : Andaluzia (Spain), Provance (France), Tuscany (Italy), Lisboa & Alentejo (Portugal). Norway is a wonderful country (though a bit chilly for my taste…). |

Greath thread! I LOVE to travel and have been doing it since I was 3!! I've spent most of my professional career in the biz as well (including my present job) so it's always been a passion.
I'd have to rate Canada, my home country as one of my favourite places to travel around. I've been all over this great nation of mine, but have yet to see the Territories, BC, Nfld or PEI. Will probably head out to BC later this year and try to get up to the Yukon and Alaska as well. I've also travelled all over the US and think I'll have to rate Arizona and California as my fav states to visit but have a few other states on my must see list.
I've done lots of international travelling as well. Countries I've visited in order of preference:
Taiwan - lived there for 4 months - definitely would not return, nuff said
Columbia - didn't see much; just a one day thing when I was making my way from Brazil to Peru so not much to go on
Brazil - didn't enjoy it as much as I thought; probably wouldn't go back unless I was staying deep in the jungle
Bermuda - beautiful beaches and very friendly people
St Lucia - gorgeous island
Spain (but just in Palma de Mallorca - would like to see more)
Egypt- hated Cairo but really liked the Red Sea coast and the interior, and smaller off the beaten track places
Swaziland - stunning but would prefer to return to Africa to see other places
Peru - loved it - want to go back and see more
Mexico - only spent 2 days there in total so must return to see the entire country. I've been trying to make it back for years as I've had my itinerary planned for half a decade. LOL I'm dying to see all the ancient ruins and be immersed in the fabulous culture and of course eat the food and drink every variety of Tequila I can get my hands on.
Italy (Parent's homeland so have been there probably over 20 times and will be returning there again for about 2 weeks next month)I have to say it is one of my favourite places to travel as it has a variety of cultural influences from all the civilizations who once conquered and ruled. Awe-inspring geography, fantastic food, spectacular ancient ruins and of course excellent shopping!
South Africa - my ultimate fav so far. Just loved the landscapes of this wonderful country, the colourful friendly people who made me feel so welcomed, the wildlife, the food, the beaches - there wasn't one thing I didn't enjoy.
And now for places I have to visit:
I just love Africa and want to see so much more of this beautiful continent. My next month long trip is going to be a trip back to discover Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and hopefully Malawi, Uganda, Ethiopia and Madagascar. Hmm think I've got all my top places in Africa covered. LOL
Other countries high on my list include Australia, New Zealand, and a bunch of South Pacific Islands, Costa Rica, France, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Morocco, Jordan, Turkey, Israel, The British Isles, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Antarctica... Ok so there aren't too many places I WOULDN"T want to go to. LOL Ahh so many choices so little time - and money.[/b] |

Thanks everyone! Europeans are so lucky they can just take the weekend travelling to another European city/country. as Canadian we have to take weeks off and only able to visit one or two places during one trip.
I love to travel to places where there's history, culture, museums, and of course, delicious foods. I am not that into beach holidays, to me they are all similar.
Gosh there are just so many places on my list and I am afraid i can't finish all of them in my lifetime! |

Wildflower, if you head up to Yukon and find yourself in Whitehorse, be sure to stay out at Inn on the Lake and its sister property Inn on the River (I think they are known as "exceptional places" on the web). They are both just the BEST and the staff superb and the food... to die for...
We spent year end/new year of 2001/2002 split between the two of them and it was just wonderful. So much better than staying right in town. |

one question to all: what type of person you are when it comes to travel accommodation? 4/5 star hotel, B&B, Motel, or backpack/ymca hostel?
as we are getting older and more finacially sound, my DH and I just can't save money on our accommodations. I might be biased, but I hesitate to visit most Afican countries (except for South Africa)because of the hygiene conditions there. |

I'm just wondering where to go in 2007. I'd like to take 3 weeks to take the children somewhere special. (They are 8 and 12) - I was wondering about Costa Rica.
My favourite countries are Borneo, for the jungle, Mexico, for Tulum particularly _ the huuuuge beach! - France, for all of it and maybe particularly, the Dordogne region. And the Andalucia region of Spain is blissful too. I love mountains.
Last year I visited Slovenia and was bowled over by the beauty of the Lakes and mountains. |

I've stayed in them all at one point or other but nowadays I opt for B&B's, reasonably priced Hotels or Motels. Before I book anywhere I always check reviews on the various travel websites first. I want to make sure the place is clean, comfortable and most of all quiet!!! |

I'm the adventurous type so I've slept and stayed just about everywhere. On trains, plains and buses, from backbacking and camping in the bush, to small inns and B & Bs, stone cottages, chalets, cabins & lodges, fine posh hotels, all inclusive resorts, expedition ships, and even a falluca! You name it, I've done it. I think it's really important to have that balance. Sure I prefer the luxury when I can have it but sometimes you miss out on things staying in glamorous hotels. I think being open minded really allows you to not be limited when you travel so you get to see and experience many wonderful things. For example, staying in a 5 star hotel in the city certainly doesn't compare to a camping safari in Africa. Both can be great experiences but they couldn't be more different.
As for hygeine, well let's just say sometimes you just gotta go when you gotta go. I'm really never comfortable using public toilets. Sometimes I'd just prefer to squat behind a rock or bush. LOL I remember using an outhouse in Egypt that was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen but I just couldn't hold it in. Unfortunatley I was in the middle of the desert off a long stretch of highway and there were no rocks or bushes to be seen for ages. And when I mean disgusting (WARNING GRAPHIC) just picture a crap bomb having exploded in a stall. Yeah - it was bad. I was trying to hold back the vomit while using the "facilities". It had to have been the most wretched experience I've ever had but something I still laugh about to this day. My suggestion is ALWAYS carry tissue or TP in your purse and a pack of wet wipes. They will be more useful than you know. |

I have travelled to many countries including USA, Canada, most countries in Europe and Asia, UK, Scotland, Wales. Ireland, New Zealand. There are still probably some I haven't mentioned but Australia is by far the best. Second to that is Switzerland. As for the wow factor, Whitehaven beach in Oz and Zermatt in Switzerland. |

What a great Link. Most favourite place is Paris, followed by San Fransisco. Also love Rome.
Did live in Portugal for 5 years, close to Spanish border, so could go to another country to do my shopping in the car, a strange experience for a Brit after living on an island.
My husband won a trip to Maui, which was an amazing 4 days, not keen on the 24hour trip home though.
The Rose Pink city of Petra in Jordan is a place to see before you die.
So many places, so little time !!!! |

oooooohhhh great thread grace!
I have been to most places but the US and Africa remain relatively unexplored.
Wildflower, I am with you on St Lucia; it is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean but we don't tell everyone so it stays a bit unspoilt. Last time I treated myself and stayed at the Chanse Anstanet hotel.
You guys are stoking my wanderlust so thanks for all the great new places suggested! For Hawaii vistors, what do you recommend? We want to go there on a two week holiday or more. Which island is best and maybe a recommendation on places to stay?
For Italy please do see the South: sicily is beautiful as is sardinia. In Sicily you must see Taormina, temples in Trapani,Zingaro, Erice, the moorish influence in Palermo, the beautiful coastline is everywhere. And the food divine... |
