Aloha all,
Thanks to all the great info on this board, I've been buying new products left and right.
However, I've been wondering how long you try a product before you decide that it's not working for you and try something else? I'm thinking 3 weeks is a good time frame.
I'm trying really hard to not try everything at once because I won't know what is really working for me. It's so tempting to try everything and see if a miracle will happen! |

Aloha Genie!
I try to give products a fair chance unless I have an allergic reaction (or unless an EDS member raves about something else and I can't wait!)...If something doesn't start to do something within 2 weeks (i.e. if I don't start looking in the mirror and saying, "Hey, something looks at least a little different" then chances are that I'll drop it before month's end...(which I suppose is a bad thing!)..Often though, I'll give it a month..BTW, Genie, I've been looking for "a miracle" for what seems like forever (LAUGHTER!)...I think the closest I've found so far is DMAE!! (last month it was Skincubed Eye Repair )

As soon as I start developing pimples and breaking out while using the product! |

It depends on the product for me.
Foundation: A few days to a week, if its gonna break me out it will happen in the time frame.
Moisturizer: Same as foundation, since switching to Emu this is no longer an issue.
Treatments: This includes acids, peels etc., I use a peel product up before I decide if it has given visable results. Luckly the two that are in my siggy gave immediate results and my skin gets better each time I use them. Acids IMO should be given a few months to see full results, as long as you are not experiencing irritation and see a steady improvement. From personal experience and from what I have read when using acids on acne prone skin you may have a time of "detox" or "purging", so I try to keep that in mind.
If something doesnt show any signs of anything within a few weeks I will usually move on. |

I've heard you should give it a whole skin cycle (28 days I think is what they tell you on the Ice Elements website) to determine if something is working for you, assuming you don't have any bad reaction before then (then I would stop it sooner). However, with products for dark circles, hyperpigmentation, etc., I would wait longer as I think these take more time to see the effects. But sometimes it's hard not to want to move on when you don't see any changes right away! I'm trying to be better and stick in there now for a longer time. |

I've heard 3 months is a fair amount of time to see if a product works. |

If I have a reaction or breakouts then I stop using immediately, otherwise I use up the whole container. |

Theoretically you should wait an entire skin cycle at least, but I think if you're experienced with using actives you can tell much more quickly if they are doing anything positive for your skin. And I certainly ditch things extremely quickly if I feel anything negative is happening. |

As a rule I usually allow 4 weeks to see if products are having any effect.
These days I try to introduce one product at a time so that I can 'monitor' any positive or adverse effects.
This method was quite helpful recently as I introduced a new foundation into my make up routine. I did not have a negative reaction to this product was delighted with the finish / longeivity of this product. 2 weeks later I ran out of my current bottle Exfol Serum (part of my morning skincare routine )- before my new bottle had the chance to arrive and started to notice little pin prick spots cropping up over my face.
Fortunately I was able to pinpoint the lack of Exfol serum as being the cause of my 'mini outbreak' otherwise I may have inadvertently discarded a great product.
My new bottle of Exfol serum arrived, I have now been able to re-incorporate it into my AM routine and my skin has now calmed down |

I'm with Bushy, I try to use up the whole container before moving on to other products. |

well if it feels horrible to use or wear or if it makes my skin look worse then it wont last long at all.
if it is not bad to use then I give it definately a full month - but unless something is not nice to use then I try and use it up
but if I really like using something I give it 3 months to show results - like line or pigment reduction, redness reduction, etc. (and will even repurchase during this time if necessary). |

I also use the whole container up, unless of course, it starts to clog my pores or makes my skin look worse. Then I just use it up on my arms and legs or butt! |

3-4 weeks for me. But if I start breaking out, get major redness or irritation, I stop sooner and throw out the product. |

3-4 weeks is usually the length of time that I'll try out a product. If it causes any irritation or break outs, I stop right away. |

I heard you should at least try it for one "skin cycle", around 28 days (or 4 weeks). Unfortunately I usually don't have the patience for it...except for DHCC...I finished an entire tube of it. (Quite proud of myself on that one!) |

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try and patiently let the products "do their job" before I try another brand. It seems that at least 28 days sounds good as long as the product is not making me break out.
It's just hard to have lots of choices sitting right in front of me and not trying it all at once! I wish there was "skincare" or "make-up" of the month club. Then I would only receive new stuff every month to try and not be so tempted. |

If it doesn't cause problems during the first few days of application, I will give it up to a month. If there aren't any great, or noticeable, improvements after a month I am always easily tempted to try something new. |

I started the ISC line 3 days ago & have broken out in cyst like acne. Is there truth to the theory that sometimes your skin needs to purge itself when trying a product initially, but after sticking it through for at least 2 weeks, your skin should then start to improve? Or, should I just stop using the line immediately? |

I don't believe in the "your skin has to purge theory", unless it's just a small break out. If you've got cyst-like acne, I'd suggest you stop immediately and go back to your regular products.
Btw, I hope that it clears up quickly. |

Hi tam. I'm so bummed. I was finally starting to like how my skin was looking & then had this terrible breakout. Now I'm gonna have to try & clear it up & then deal with the residual scarring. uuugghhh. I think you're right about the purging. I suspect that it's the isc super serum or the firming complex that may be causing it b/c the active & hydra cool are recommended for acne prone skin. I know that c can sometimes cause breakouts. I think I will switch back to using the c+e+ferulic as that did not cause a breakout. Another theory is that my FIR sauna use could be causing me to breakout b/c I started doing that at the same time as the ISC line. |
