Hello ladies,
I thought I would just put this out there and ask anyone if they have any sort of advice to help me get pregnant!
My husband and I have been trying for about a year now- no luck, both perfectly healthy, both have healthy diets, I am taking prenatal vitamins.
Not sure what to do. So before I go to the extreme and take hormones etc, I was just wondering if any of you had any advice that might help/work.
Any unconventional advice/myths out there???
Thanks a bunch

Hey Canadian Girl,
I am not an expert in this, but I will tell you what I have heard
I think the first step should be tracking your ovulation schedule, knowing when you ovulate is crucial.
Myths I heard :
- women who drink tea regularly tend to get pregnant easier, due to a substance in Tea
- drinking cough syrup can also help to thin any mucus in your body and make your body fluid go around faster, that create an easier environment to conceive.
- Do not get up and take a shower after sex, just let yourself sleep.
- try to avoid taking high dose of Vitamin C, cause it somehow interfere with the conception process.
HTH,

Thanks diderot!
I have been tracking my ovulation schedule and it ranges from 26-30 days.
I can't drink tea b/c it causes more production of my kidney stones.
I have heard of the cough syrup, but haven't tried it yet.
And I have been laying in bed for at least 30 mins after (sometimes with my legs up in the air)
So far not working
I have bought this stuff called pre-seed, which is supposed to help make a better environment for sperm.
So hopefully that will help!
I'm just trying to remain stress free and hopefully it will happen soon! |

Hi, Im an IVF scientist, I think i can give u few tips!
If u have tried for a yr already, i would suggest ur partner to go for a semen analysis, just get a request form from ur GP. There is no point of trying and waiting around if ur partner has low sperm count or other sperm related problems, which natural conception wouldnt work. Of cos, ur eggs also play very important role, such as u have regular periods and is ovulating, no block tubes, PCOS, endometriosis etc.
Next is for both of u to start taking anti-oxidant, needless to say no smoking. Because sperm that has a high DNA damage rate is proven to delay conception time, chance and also increases miscarriage rate. if u r very concern, go for a SCSA test.
U can also take folic acid.
Ur partner needs to ejaculate frequently. Alot of ppl has this misconception that the longer u leave it the better. No, thats a big mistake. It's true that more sprem will come through, but they have increase DNA damage and also very poor quality (such as more debris in semen, greatly increase dead sperm and greatly reduced sperm movement, i.e. they will swim slower than normal). So, best to ejauculate no less than every 3 days.
Lastly, the best time to have intercourse is 2 weeks before ur period.
hope that helps!! |

well it is hard to follow pickiis but my sister and I actually did the cough med. trick.
Could be old wives tale but who knows..I bought the regular Robitussin, just the expectorant.....I figured out when I ovulated and for that phase of time (5 days, didn't pinpoint it exactly) I took one teaspoon a day.
my sister had a little bit harder time getting preg. than me but she did this...I did not do this the first month I tried, the second month I did and got pregnant. This is assuming all is well with both you and partner... |

Wow, thanks for the great advice guys!
My husband and I have already been through all of the poking and prodding/testing and we are both normal.
We both don't smoke (never have) and only he drinks socially, I rarely drink.
I have been taking folic acid as well.
Pickiis thanks for the great advice, I didn't kow about the DNA damage in sperm caused by infrequent ejaculation!
The ov watch looks cool, but I am very intuned with my body as to when I ovulate- I can always feel it- slight pain on one of my sides for about 36hrs right before I ovulate.
I think I am going to try the robitussum - too bad my DH is in El salvador right now on a business trip, I'm acutally ovulating right now!!!
I think I'm a bit too stressed as well- although I have been told that there are not scientific studies that have proven the relationship between stress and infertility.
I have an OBGYN appointment today, hopefully I will get some answers or some help!!!

The cough syrup (guaifenesin) is also the same product that's in Mucinex tablets (if you prefer tablets to syrup). Just make sure you don't get anything with an antihistamine or decongestant in it - that'll dry everything up! And I've heard it helps with sperm motility too, if the man takes it as well as the woman.
If you're into herbs at all, do some research on vitex/chasteberry. I've heard a lot of women having success with this as well... |

SO I bought the robitussum today, with the guaifenesin in it, for dry cough. But it also says that it loosesns chest congestion- so I guess this won't work cuz it has a decongestant?
Thanks

Hi Canadian girl, I am sorry to hear that and I know exactly how it feels. I also had problems of conceiving. I think stress played a big role. I've been seeing fertility doctors last year for about 4 months, nothing happened, i was kind of give up and planned for my vacation, then it came in the 5th month. but unfortunately i miscarried after 8 weeks. that was back in June.
Starting in Dec last year, my doctor put me on ovulating drugs, clomid, and I did my first IUI in December, it failed.
i did one IUI again in Jan, today is the 7th day after the surgery so I don't know yet whether it is successful, but somehow i felt it's going to fail again because my body doesnt have any changes or symptoms.
are you taking body temperature? my problem is i ovulate very late, my cycle is about 26-28 days, and i ovulate on the 16th or 17th day, the temprature after ovulation is not that high either. If you see fertility doctor, they will do ultrasound on you during your ovulation , and tell you when is the best time to intercourse when the follicle size is big enough.
it is hard not get stressful, every month after ovulation i would be waiting anxiously, can't wait to do the pregnance test. i know it doesnt help but it is really hard not to think about it. i hope both you and i can overcome this and get lucky this year! |

CanadianGirl,
If the only ingredient in the cough syrup is guaifenesin, you should be ok. That's what guaifenesin is typically used for - to loosen mucous congestion. It just also happens to "loosen" other bodily secretions as well - which helps the spermies swim to their destination!!
gracedhy
-Sorry to hear the vitex didn't work for you. I took it for a while without luck too, but decided to quit trying different things because my DH wouldn't go get tested to see if there were any problems on his end (he couldn't POSSIBLY have a problem with HIS boys... ) |

This may be a strange question, but have you and your husband done "nooners?" If he can come home from lunch, say anywhere from 12-3 and have a little fun then? It could be a long shot, but your body temperature might be in a better place in the afternoon as opposed to early morning or evening. That's how my husband and I got pregnant (first time trying that way!). He came home for lunch and we got to work. It was def. more of a "for him" than a "for me" b/c he only had a half hour, but I have also heard that not orgasming might help the boys swim to where they need to go. Also, if you know when you are ovluating, if you haven't already, have sex with your DH three days before you ovulate. Okay, and last but not least, and this may be way too much info, but my friend who tried for nearly a year to get pregnant, swears that she got pregnant when she and her husband tried it "doggy style!"
If you and your husband are both healthy, I'm sure it's just a matter of time....try to relax if you can. I'm sure soon you'll be sharing your joyous news with all of us.

Hi,
I went to my OBGYN yesterday, good news- i'm perfectly normal, bad news- my husband only had 5% normal sperm (fertile ranges from 12% and over). Plus it is low volume.
So now..... I need to take DH to a fertility clinic and get him poked and proded some more and see if it his diet (not enought VIT C) or other underlying conditions causing this.
My OBGYN says that most likey they will have my husband give them a few samples and then they will sort out the good from the bad sperm and then artificially inseminate.
So I got a couple of weeks before my consult- hopefully everything goes well!
Thanks for all of your suggestions- PS- we did try it in all sorts of postions- but never tried the nooners!
Oh by they way has anyone heard of this problem?
Gracedhy, thanks for sharing your story, I really hope this time it works for you!

I also heard that having a too acidic body hampers conception. You can get ph testing sticks and actually test the vaginal ph.
If it's too acidic, the sperm cant survive there.
It's easy enough to make oneself more alkaline. |

Actually, a low sperm count is way more common than any man would want to believe
Back when I was still trying, my ob/gyn broke down infertility this way: 40% of the time it's the woman, 40% of the time it's the man, and 20% of the time there's no explanation. So he carries as much "responsibility" as you do. That's why I wouldn't do any heavy duty drugs until my DH had himself checked out (which he wouldn't do - insisted he wasn't the problem. I think he was afraid to find out that he might be less than perfect ). |

I've heard herbs have been used before back it the day for fertility assistance. I think one that was mentioned was chasteberry (vitex, angus cactus) |

I know this is waaay out there, but I just want to share. Our next door neighbor really wanted to conceive a child for over 5 years, but they had no luck. They went to the doctor, and they tried every single method to get the wife pregnant. But no hope so they were thinking about adopting. My parents are pretty good friends with them, so when they went back to china they asked (ask=purchased) for a "Guan Ying Po Sha". That was basically a reglious symbolic comparison to virgin mary statue. Anyhow, they wrapped it up and brought it to the couple's house. And my parents told them to put it on a shelf. And after 3 months, the lady became pregnant..its really werid but somehow it happened. And now, the couple has 2 kids! This happened to another couple as well, thats why my parents thought it woiiuld help our neighbor and turned out it did.
I'm not really a believer in these things, but i just thought it was something interesting to share. |
