Hi everyone,
I was thinking of buying some coconut oil for my hair.
I had used a mixture of jojoba and canola oil in my hair the other day and lovd it but i read recently that coconut is the best for hair.
Do you know if it matters if i use refined or unrefined in my hair? i know there's difference if i plan to use the oil for cooking.
Any answers will be appreciated, thank you!

I never tried. My guess it would be refined, easier for hair to absorb. |

Hey Kristen!
Unrefined is better in terms of more moisture and retained nutirents for the hair. I use it on mine about once every two weeks. I bought a small plastic flip top bottle and transfered some into it, that way I can just let it melt in some hot water and appy it to my hair. Ive read that its best to leave it on for an hour covered with a shower cap. I run a hair dryer over it every 15 mins. You may need to wash your hair with a NON-moisturizing shampoo a few times to get it all out. If your hair is long I would probably only do the lower half. |

Hi Rachael,
Thank you for your reply. Deep down I knew unrefined would be better but I was trying to save. Aw, oh well. I bought a gallon on unrefined based on your response and can't wait to get it and try it in my hair.
Transferring into a smaller bottle and warming it sounds like a great idea as i won't be losing any oil to a meausuring cup or another container.
While googling coconut oil, i ran across a site saying coconut oil can be used on the scalp to promote a healthier scalp. As mine is itchy and irritated, i think i might have to massage the oil into my whole head. good thing i bought a gallon .
Also, if anyone else is interested, i found the best price per ounce at mountainroseherbs, 1 gallon (128 ounces) for $28 before shipping.

Hello snowiebunny--why would you say refined is easier to absorb? is it not solid like the unrefined would be at room temperature or is there another reason?

I agree on using the unrefined one.
You may need to place a warm towel on your head to get a better absorption, especially in the colder months if you live in a cold weather climate as the coconut oil solidifies at normal room temperatures... but you probably already know this! lol! Just thought I would toss that out there, just in case you or someone else reading along could use the info.
Let us know how you like it!

Definitely, unrefined. You can also use it as a cleanser... just melt a bit on your fingertips, massage into your skin and then wipe of with a damp cloth -- it's great! |

Thats a good point! I use it on my scalp too, I suggested that b/c I wasnt sure how difficult it would be to get out of long hair(mine is very short). Heck, if your gonna do it you might as well go all the way! |

Is this ok for oily hair? I've tried using oil before but no matter how much I wash and sud my hair ends up all oily looking afterwards, weighed down and stringy. What am I doing wrong? |

after all this talk about oils and hair, i simply had to do another warm oil treatment even though my coconut hasn't arrived yet. I have to say my irritated scalp which was getting flakey too has gone away today .
i love this treatment and vonstella, i blowdried my hair while it was in the shower cap but went one step further and i ended sleeping in it so my hair is nice and soft today!
