My daughter is only 14 months old and she had very dry skin. She has used a bunch of different baby soaps and the only one that isn't horrible is Aveeno for eczema. Even using this her face looks windburned and she had rough spots on her legs. I use Eucerin on her face and her legs but it doesn't seem to help the legs any and the face it has no lasting affects, meaning if I forget once its bad all over again. I really don't like using Eucerin since it seems like it is just overpriced vasoline but I haven't found anything that works. She doesn't do well with scented products. Any help would be appreciated. |

Try the Weleda Calendula cream and Calendula soap. It has worked wonders on my son and my neighbor's daughter. Drugstore.com usually has good prices.
How come everybody's babies these days suffer from eczema? |

I second the Weleda products, for her face I would keep a light layer of vaseline on it at all times, its the only thing that works for my 11 month old, he gets dry, chapped cheeks too. Plus you dont have to worry about stuff getting into their eyes and stinging. |

Weleda has very nice baby products. But I also think you should consider wether you need to wash her with soap? Or wash with soap only 1-2 times a week. |

What about Dove soap or Cetaphil?
You may also want to consider a filter for your shower/bath water as the impurities in the water can be extremely drying to some, especially if you are in an area where you can smell the chlorine when you turn on the tap.
Please let us know how you make out.

I would definitely test your water--I've had normal nearly perfect skin for years, and when I moved to a place with hard water, my hair turned dry and brittle, and I am developing rosacea now. Apparently, even mild detergents can bind to the skin and hair, making it impossible for any moisturizer to be effective. I would test your water, do some research, and ask your doctor which products will not react chemically with the minerals in your water. if it's chlorine, a simple vitamin c filter will work!
And I third weleda, since it is all natural. I've finally realized that some of our problems stem from the chemical composition of even the most mild cleansing agents and other ingredients with the chemical composition of the water, so you may want to avoid sulfates, detergents, and mineral compounds until you figure out what is causing it. Cetaphil would be a big no-no if that is the case. How about some apricot oil on the dry patches? that is supposed to help, and if I remember correctly, it is used in a lot of baby formulations. Epicuren also has a baby line that is supposed to be absolutely the best for normalizing baby's skins...
And Dr. Bronners has an extra mild version of their castile soap for "Baby" that is all-natural and multi-purpose.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I have 3 kids so I have a little bit of experience w/ kids and dry skin! First, you don't need to wash her face w/ soap, just a wet washcloth. Second, I found in the last couple of mos 2 gentle liquid soaps: Aveeno and Aquaphor. You really just need to wash what gets dirty: feet, privates, hands and underarms. The KEY is to put AQUAPHOR HEALING OINTMENT on them daily. It's like vaseline and is amazing at protecting their skin. I put it on my kids faces everyday b4 school and at bedtime. HTH. |

There was a great thread started on baby skin care a while back:

You may also want to try some Rosehip Oil and some Calendula oil to help soothe and moisturize the dry skin. The both work wonders and are gentle enough for babies. |

I would suggest a cleanser that doesn't contain harsh detergents, and is not high in ph.
skin biology's gentle clean may be a good option.
diana yvonnes has two non-detergent cleansers - rosehip seed cleanser, and wheatgerm cleanser (both ph 5.5).
you could also try some doctor bonners liquid soaps -these are not great in terms of ph- I think they're ph 8, but there are no harsh detergents, and it's pretty easy to find.
also - emu oil would help heal and add moisture. |

When my son was born, my midwife recommended olive oil for moisturization if his skin became too dry, probably the extra virgin would be the best, I never had to use it though because he didn't get dry skin as a newborn, now that he's 9 months old and its wintertime he does have abit of dryness on his cheeks (mostly from drooling) and a few dry spots on the back of his legs. I use the aveeno baby line of moisturizers, that seems to help somewhat, but now I'm going to try Vonstella's idea with the vaseline. I'm always paranoid he will end up with eczema like his mama I pray he doesn't!
I also only use a wet washcloth (no soap) to wipe his face and use johnsons head to toe babywash sparingly on his "stinky" parts! |
