I have been using Retin A for two months now and have always applied Cerave lotion mixed with a little emu oil over it without waiting time. I have visible peeling, esp. around the mouth. So, it obvioulsy works. Are there any sources/links that support the theory that you DON'T have to waitn an hour or so for it to be absorbed completely?? I really dont like having to wait so long when getting home late, ready to go to sleep. My skin is too dry to not add moisturizer/oil. Thanks |

The way I understood it is that you should wait at least 20 min. or so before applying actives. I think emu oil or moisturizer should be ok although it would depend on what's in the moisturizer, I guess. With that said, I always wait at least 20 min before applying anything else.
I'm sure one of the more experienced posters will come along soon with advice. |

Monica, I don't use retin-A, but I use Tazorac which is similar. When I have the time/energy I wait 10 min or so before applying moisturizer, but if I'm tired and I want to go to bed I just apply my moisturizer right afterwards and it works fine, so I say if you don't want to wait you'll be fine with applying right afterwards. Ok, here is how I understand it (and I am a Tretinoin user - this is same as Retin A):
Retin A/Tretinoin are both vitamin A acids, so they do not require time to turn into the vitamin A acid on your skin. They already are in the form your skin needs. So, it is OK to apply your moisturizer shortly after you apply Retin A. I usually try to wait a few minutes, but I often don't.

Maybe you can at least compensate by using it daily for longer than a year, maybe two, to see full benefits before reducing frequency?
What do you think? |

Right - that makes sense.
Also, they say to apply it on DRY skin because DAMP skin greatly SPEEDS up absorption. So, if I apply it to moist skin, then that should also reduce possible wait time IMO. |

I have to disagree. If you apply it to your skin when it's moist, you're just asking for more peeling and irritation. Better to apply to dry skin, and then follow right up with a moisturizer. HTH! |

It just so difficult to spread evenly I saw a PS suggest the moist application on his website for his patients. I dont get any irritation from this. |

I agree with Rubby and Manslayer, except I would add that if you use emu oil as your moisturiser without waiting it will enhance penetration and make it feel much stronger and lead to more irritation and peeling. I can't put emu straight over actives or acids myself without waiting. |

Well, with acids you have to wait. If you don't you'll mess up the pH and make your acids inactive. I think there is a required 30-minute wait period after you apply acids.

I know the theory Rubby (SCB) but strangely it has an extra strong effect if I put emu straight over Mandelic - never saw peeling like it. |

Hi Monica34 - I think Renova is supposed to be more emollient than Retin-A (both are tretinoin). Maybe this could help relieve your dryness/peeling problem a bit and also eliminate the extra step of adding moisturizer. |

The Dermadoctor info was very interesting. However, I didnt see any advice on wait time AFTER Retin A application - did I over look it? Does it say to wait before applying moisturizer?
If emu pushes Retin A then I understand that this would NOT interfere with absorption if applied immediately .Just the opposite. Am I correct? This is so confusing. Which is it now? |

This is the link I found where they say its ok to put Retin A on moist skin and use with moisturizer, immediately after, even together.
http://www.renewyou.com/products/index.shtml
Retin-A (Renova) - One of the most valuable treatments for skin maintenance and rejuvenation is Retin-A. This vitamin A compound should be used at night after cleansing the skin and removing all makeup. We recommend 1/2 of a pea-size amount (0.05% Cream/Blue tube) applied to moist skin. The package insert says to apply the Retin-A to dry skin but we have obtained more even spreading by applying the cream to skin that is wet or moist. This also makes it easier to use less to cover the entire face. This process avoids over exposure and burning or irritating the skin by using too much cream.
Some patients will need to use even less than the 1/2 of a pea-size amount due to their sensitive skin. It will take some experimentation to find the best combination for your skin type. Retin-A will still work if you skip a few nights, use less than the 1/2 pea size amount, mix the Retin-A with a moisturizer before applying it to your face, or even putting moisturizer on immediately after the Retin-A. After applying Retin-A to your face, you may use other skin treatments, moisturizers, masks, or makeup on your skin. You should be gentle and cautious until you figure out how best to use Retin-A for the rejuvenation of your skin |

The emu won't interfere with the Retin A or dilute it but it does make things penetrate more strongly so if you are experiencing irritation, redness or peeling it's not a good idea.
The article you quote is just saying 'moisturiser' most of them just sit on your face. Emu oil penetrates more deeply. |

When I used Retin-A, my skin was extremely dry. To solve the problem, I used lotion mask wetting it with lavender water, and out it on my face for 15min before Retin A. |
