This will be my second year hosting a pretty elaborate Oscars-viewing party (it's turned into an annual event by popular demand!). Last year, I served dinner before the show during the red-carpet arrivals, and then had cocktails and typical movie snacks during the show. I also did contests for trivia, picking winners, etc. Last year, I got pretty creative with the menu, which I based off of the nominated movies, but I'm having a little trouble this year and am hoping people will chime in with suggestions... : D As an example, last year the menu was:
Capote
Kansas BBQ Chicken Sandwiches
Brokeback Mountain
Vegetarian Cowboy Chili & Cornbread
Munich
German Potato Salad
The Constant Gardener
Green Salad
with
Syriana
Oil & Vinegar Dressing
Crash
Black & White Cheesecake
Good Night & Good Luck
Red Scare Cupcakes (red velvet w/cream cheese frosting)
This year's nominees were announced today. The best picture nominees are:
The Queen
The Departed
Babel
Little Miss Sunshine, and
Letters from Iwo Jima
The entire list of nominees can be found at: http://www.oscar.com/nominees/?pn=list All creative suggestions welcomed!!! |

What a great idea for an Oscar party! I love it!!
I don't have any suggestions off the top of my head, but I'll give it some thought. Sounds like fun! |

Oh my, this sounds good, can I come? I wont take up much space and I'll be very quiet!
Maybe for Letters from Iwo Jima, you could do some sort of dessert with little green army men on top? Or an asian dish? |

Green army men - I hadn't thought of that! I could do a battlefield cake... Hmm. I'm sure there are lots of dishes that could benefit from the strategic placement of a few little army men.
My ideas so far are:
An appetizer plate for Babel with Moroccan, Mexican, and Japanese food - maybe empanadas, these Moroccan phyllo rolls I found on epicurious, and shrimp cocktail with an asian-inspired dipping sauce?
The Queen - I did want to do something with tea, but not sure what. I found a recipe for a green tea cheesecake that I thought could be a possibility.
Little Miss Sunshine I'm having a hard time with. All I can think of are "Grandpa's F***ing Fried Chicken" or ice cream.
I think one dessert may have to be based on The Devil Wears Prada, even though it's not a best picture nominee. I was thinking devil's food cupcakes with coffee butter cream frosting, and then dusting red sugar over the tops in the shape of a pitchfork. |

For Letters to Iwo Jima my vote would be for something very Japanese, like hot green tea, hot sake, green tea ice cream, etc. Or if you'd like an actual dish, something like miso eggplant, goma ae (which is spinach with a sesame sauce), slow-cooked shiitake, etc. (If you are interested in making any of the dishes I'll be happy to give you the recipe--- Japanese cooking is a hobby of mine.) |

Although Grandpa's F***ing Fried Chicken would be the funniest for Little Miss Sunshine (I assume you would do chicken fingers), you could also do something with Olives, like marinated olives, blue cheese stuffed olives, olive tapenade with pita chips or something like that. Or a cake shaped like a yellow VW bus. Or Madeleines for the world's number 2 Proust scholar. If you decorate the table you can write the sign for Little Miss Sunshine on a notepad that says 'Welcome to Hell'. |

Oh my god - great suggestions! I can't believe I didn't think of something with olives!! Hmm...I guess I could do heavy appetizers instead of a traditional dinner this year - that could be interesting. The madelines cracked me up too. |

Manslayerliz, I may take you up on that - those all sound so yummy! I love Japanese food. I spent two weeks in Japan over the summer, and the friend's family I stayed with for part of the time was shocked that I was willing to eat pretty much anything that was put in front of me! |

I had a suggestion for cocktail/tea sandwiches involving ham until I realized each course was film-based. But, here goes, anyway.
These are delightful little sandwiches:
bread of your choice (I prefer whole wheat.)
thin (deli-sliced) Blackforest Ham
Cream cheese
Apricot jam

I would do "Dreamgirls puffs" My version of creampuffs but u can stuff them with anything (creamed chicken breast or legs?). You can also fashion them so when they bake they'll have two little peaks.
I'll post my recipe if u are interested. |

For An Inconvenient Truth - Large plate wrapped in blue paper, with a chocolate cake covered in white icing. Break a few chunks off the sides of the cake and lay them on the blue paper. |

Um, no - guests are both women and men. Those who aren't as interested in the show tend to congregate and chat in the kitchen or dining room, where the food is, with the rest in the living room. People tend to talk over a lot of the "lesser" awards anyway - we pay attention mostly to the biggies. I had about 15 people last year and this year am probably looking at about 20, so the hardest part is making sure I have seating for everyone!
I was going to have a super bowl party, but then the Chargers lost and I figured there's no point. |

So what did your menu look like?? |

Thanks for asking! Unlike last year I wasn't coming up with a cohesive dinner menu, so I decided to do a bunch of appetizers instead. I sort of got inspired as I went along and indulged my Martha Stewart tendencies! The final menu was:
BABEL Global Tower of Hors d'Oeuvres:
Moroccan Chicken Phyllo Rolls w/Spiced Tomato Sauce
Shrimp with Asian Dipping Sauce
Mini Plantain & Black Bean Empanadas
THE DEPARTED Guinness Mac 'n Cheese
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE Olive's Little Miss Sun-Dried Tomato Spread (I cheated a little on this one as this dish is my go-to appetizer - just layered olive oil, crumbled goat cheese, garlic, olives, sundried tomatoes, italian parsley, basil, rosemary, and crushed red pepper)
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA Asian Greens with Ginger Miso Dressing
THE DEPARTED "Fish & Chips" (Lime-Marinated Salmon on Pita Chips with Meyer Lemon Confit)
BABEL Mexican Wedding Cakes
LITLLE MISS SUNSHINE Petites Madeleines a la Marcel Proust
THE QUEEN Tea-Infused Cheesecake with Raspberries and Raspberry-Mint Tisane
My signature drink was a "Celebritini", - vodka, lemonade, peach nectar and mango nectar, garnished with a slice of starfruit. I came up with this myself, so there was lots of testing in advance to get the proportions of the juices/alcohol right. I also had popcorn and movie theater candy for during the show.
I had 20+ people rsvp for the party, but unfortunately it started snowing heavily (for DC) on Sunday morning, then switched over to a wintry, sleety/rainy mix. In the end, only about 8 people were able to make it, since the roads were still pretty messy on Sunday night. Kind of a bummer and I have a LOT of food left over, but we still had fun! One of my friends who was able to make it is a photographer and took pictures of the buffet table - I'll post them as soon as she emails them to me! |
