I'm feeling un-inspired by my local rental store collection. Does anybody have a cool movie recommendation? I'm looking for
1. Something sweet but not too sweet (legally blonde, yes; March of Penguin, no)
2. Nothing too intense/sad/thought-provoking (no documentary, scary movie, deep reflection on life)
3. Preferably with some action but without too much blood (like Mission Impossible)
4. Possibly something clever (like the usual suspects)
5. Must absolutely not be boring (like Pirates of Carribean II), story should hang together as much as possible- even if far-fetched (inconsistency drives me crazy), shouldn't be too long (The good shephard was toooo long).

Whenever I want to escape I pop in an old Audrey Hepburn movie. My favorite is Roman Holiday. |

Sabrina isn't one of my favorites. There's something about the chemistry between Bogart and Hepburn, as in there is none. I guess during filming, Bogart was nasty to everyone, and was open about his dislike for Audrey. He wanted Lauren Bacall to play Sabrina and was put off that they gave the roll to Audrey instead. Meanwhile, Audrey and William Holden were having an affair.
(I read a biography of Audrey.  )
I second Little Miss Sunshine. The Devil Wears Prada is all right; Meryl Streep is the best part. Other wise, it'd stink. |

It's far from recent, but my favourite curl up on the sofa film is "Blithe Spirit" with Rex Harrison.
It's a Noel Coward script, with Margaret Rutherford as an eccentric psychic.
The clothes and location, and of course, the script, are fantastic.
Second favourite is ( also very not recent!) Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby in "High Society". So swellegant!
I sound like Rip Van Winkle here - will try to think of something more recent!! |

Oh thanks guys, I like your suggestions, specially Catski's. Love Noel Coward. Saw Devil wears Prada and I agree that w/o Meryl Streep, it'd stink. I saw Little Miss Sunshine on the plane and do like it - though it has the potential of being disturbing.
For the record, I didn't like Mr and Mrs Smith either. I found the physical fights between the two disturbing! |

Ok, I got some for you!:
Labyrinth:
This is a Jim Henson movie with a mix of puppets and people. It's cute, and David Bowie sings a bunch of songs in it and looks soooooo sexy in his costume and glam-rock wig!! (swoon!!!)
Girls Just Want to Have Fun:
This is an old Sarah Jessica Parker/Helen Hunt/Shannon Doherty movie. It's a little cheesy (hey, it was made in the 80s), but it's very funny and has lots of great 80s music.
Some Like it Hot:
Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. Lots of people consider this to be MM's best movie ever. I think it is, and it's also the funniest movie I've ever seen. Just hysterical. Story of two male musicians who hide out from the mob by dressing in drag and joining a girl's band.
Along Came Polly:
Jennifer Anniston and Ben Stiller. Very funny and cute, IMO.
Playing By Heart:
Angelina Jolie, Gillian Anderson, Sean Connery, Ryan Phillipe, etc etc. HUGE all-star cast, funny, very engaging movie. This is the movie that made me fall in love with Angelina Jolie--- she's great in it. It's a bunch of separate stories about couples, and little by little you can see how they are all connected in some way.
Some of these movies are harder to find, but they're totally worth it, IMO! |

Actually, the Break Up just depressed me. I've been in relationships with long, protracted break-up periods with a lot of the same fights that were in the movie, and I don't like being reminded of them, lol. |

Not on DVD yet but "THE HOLIDAY" w/ Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet was the best light, feel good movie I've seen in a LONG time. Funny w/ some different and interesting relationships between young and old. I left that movie in the BEST mood (My DH even liked it)  |

Oooh Ooooh Ooooh! I second this suggestion. I was going to suggest it myself. Excellent fantasty movie with Jennifer Connelly in her much younger days. The script is great. Not only does it include the genius of Jim Henson but the Frouds as well (who are better known for their art on fairies as well as creating Yoda in Star Wars among other puppets and characters.www.worldoffroud.com). This is one of my favourite movies. If you like fantasy movies I would highly recommend it. http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/posting.php
Other great fantasy movies (just to stick with this genre) are Legend (see Tom Cruise in his early days along with a fiendish Tim Curry), and of course The Lord of the Rings trilogy which in my opinion are probably the best works of fantasy in film out there.
Other movies you may want to consider: Indian Jones, Lara Croft, Superman, Star Wars.

Love Actually...very cute...so was Holiday...it was along the same lines.
I have some comedy suggestions...these are tough because everyone has a different kind of humor. These are a few of my favs...
1. Bad News Bears (2001 version w/Billy Bob...freakin funny!)
2. Waiting
3. Office Space
Best love story movies....

Wildflower, isn't Labyrinth just the best movie ever? Jennier Connelly is sooo beautiful in it, and David Bowie... oh my! Do you like the Dark Crystal too?
Olivia, I like What Dreams May Come too--- what a gorgeous movie! I also loved the Notebook--- DH and I both cried when we watched it.
Agent Cat, I thought of some more feel good movies for you. One is The Lake House--- wonderful love story! The other is Sixteen Candles--- it's a John Hughes movie from the 80s and it's guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. |

Okay Agent - These may meet your criteria:
"Master and Commander", a great yarn and action film. Not boring!
"Talk To Her" (by Pedro Almodovar -- the Spanish genius) but it's subtitled. Quirky foreign film that's funny and sad but ends on an upbeat note. Brilliant!!! I also loved his "All About My Mother".
For suspense, what about "The Talented Mr. Ripley"??? Jude Law never looked so good! Or "Malice" with Nicole Kidman and Alex Baldwin.
I also loved "Sexy Beast" with Ray Winstone and Ben Kingsley but it's an edgy crime drama and has some violence. Bowled me over.
For oldies, one of my favorites is a David Lean film called "Summertime" with Katherine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi. It's beautiful to look at and very romantic. "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" with William Holden and Jennifer Jones is very romantic too. Tear jerker though.
Another oldie I've always loved is "The Big Country" with Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, and Charleton Heston. It's an American western tale with a great ensemble cast. Yet another old Gregory Peck film I love is "Twelve O'Clock High" -- WWII flick.
And one of my favorite musicals is "GiGi". Love it!!! |

It is definitely one of my favourite movies. I could watch it over and over again. I don't really care for David Bowie much but he was so perfect for that role. Just excellent! Well he may have not had any power over her but he held me pretty captivated. LOL  I haven't seen Dark Crystal yet, oddly enough as that is another great Froud masterpiece and I just love the Frouds, but I so would like to. I really need to rent that one day.
What Dreams May Come is a beautiful movie as well. I was just talking about the concept of "soul mates" with a friend last night and I mentioned that movie. It was so well done.
As for the notebook, man I could just not stop crying. I was crying throughout the whole movie! It was such a tear jerker. So if you are looking for a feel good movie, it's definitely not the one to go for. Save it for a time you want to feel all romantic and depressed. LOL |

Oh, I love this movie too.  When I'm in a bad mood, I watch it, and it makes me feel better. Also, I love "Lost in translation", but it's a little bit specific, so not everybody like it.
I second m.april in "Talk to her" recommendation. Incredible movie! |

And I loved hearing Rachel Roberts recite Goethe to Wendy Hiller. What a voice! It made me, for the first time ever, love hearing the sound of spoken German. |
