I know you tip at hair salons etc... do you tip someone who does electrolysis? What about lash curling do you tip on that too? I am not cheap I dont want to look like an idiot if its considered rude to tip.I didnt tip the laser lady because it was in a drs. office....

Hi Lucyluc:

I am in the U.S. and when I go to my salon, I tip the lady who colors my hair, the lady who washes my hair and the lady who tints my eyebrows. By the time I get out of there I already paid $30 in tips!

Lucy, I think tipping is up to you. I didn't tip the lady that tattooed my eyelids, and she didn't poke my eyes out. In the Lounge area, there was already a discussion of how much to tip, but this topic is my pet peeves. If I really follow all the tipping advice, I'd be more broke than I already am. Why don't we tip the mail man or the police, or the firefighter? Are our lives less appreciated than our beauty?

Well tipping I thought was meant for people who really depend on tips to survive, like waiters.(I work in hotel I need tips). But you would think an esthetcian who charges 150 for 15 minutes wouldnt need a tip to survive....I will play it by ear...I dont really tip in a drs. office but I would in a salon...I didnt tip for IPL teatments..that was 750 for 30 minutes!(Yeah I got ripped off)

I think that is how tipping got started, but then it got abused, or people (consumers like us) just get paranoid. In Thailand, even waiters didn't use to get much tip, but now that the western culture had spreaded due to tourists, now they're expecting more tip. I think anyone can use more money/tips, and where do you draw the line?

I am with you all on tipping. Although I do tip my nail and hair lady. Spa services and waiter/waitresses, I am sick an tired of the vibe that you have to tip everyong. You go to Starbucks and order a coffee, pay with your debit card and the receipt that spits out has a place for a tip. Even the Circle K has it now. No one tips me for taking their order on the phone. It is their job for goodness sake. I make a point to put a big "0" on the tip line. I will give them a tip, don't play in the street. They have a job and are getting paid to do the job!

I just had that same discussion with a few friends. Where do you draw the line? Most fast food restaurants don't allow tipping (MCD, etc.). How is Starbucks different from these other establishments? Tipping for what service? Handing me my coffee?

Somebody above mentioned Thailand. The same applies to most other Asian countries. Tipping is not even expected. In most European countries people will round of to the next full Euro. e.g. Your bill comes out to EUR 34.12 people will give EUR 35. Maybe EUR36 if the service was exceptional. On the other hand you go out in the US with a group of 8 people and they will automatically charge you 18% tip and then have a line on the credit card receipt for additional tip. I don't get it.

I thought in Europe they automatically put it on the check, thats why a lot of europeans dont tip here they "think" it goes on the check. I also heard that the government has started to issue government retsaurant checks so they can keep tabs on the waiters income and the owners true sales..if that dont beat all Rolling Eyes

OMG bergquis, too funny!

When I was in college, I moved apartments in the same complex but had enough furniture that I needed to call the movers for about 2 hours worth of work. They started their timing from when they got to the apartment complex, but "got lost" and took about 15 minutes to find my apartment.

Needless to say, they took their sweet time moving my furniture and I got about 1 hour of real work out of them. The reason I booked for 2 hours is because it would've taken 2 men that amount of time to move all my stuff. Well, they had another move to do, so they just left me with a partially moved apartment! I had to call one of my friends who happens to be a body builder to come move the heavier stuff for me (he's super strong and can lift heavy things, thank God!), but these jerks had the nerve to charge me $80/hour for their "services" and then handwrite in on the invoice in big writing "TIP: $______________." I wrote my check for the 2 hours total and on the tip line I wrote a big, fat "0" and included these words "If you worked harder and were honest, you might deserve a monetary tip! Until then, invest in Apple, your stock is sure to increase."

They were none too happy about that, but not nearly as ticked off at me as I was at them!

Yes, in Thailand, before the western culture had crossed over, waiters got change only as tips. So like you said, if the bill is 185 baht, then someone would give 190 baht, and leave the 5 baht as tip. It's basically whatever coins they don't want to collect in their pocket.

Yeah, I do the same. I think the tip line is there to give you a guilt-trip. Well, my boss never tipped me for handing her my wonderful reports, some of them were even self-initiated to improve the work for many in my dept. When I think of it, lots of these salon owners charge $80 for a haircut, which takes them about 20-30 mins to do. That is so much more than my hourly rate, and why am I the poorer of the two have to tip them?

I tip when getting my hair/nails done. Also I tip when at a restuarant.. I know some restaurants, most waiters/waitresses depend on tips like my fiance's brother. He gets paid only $2.50 per hour waitering. Most of the money he makes are from tips.

I think for them, yes, they should be tipped. I used to wait tables, too. However, restaurant owners who get all the profit, but if they serve the food, they still want the tips, just because they feel people "have to" tip. I think if service sucks, even those that depend on tips should not get tips. I once had a really bad waiter who would not bring any silverware, or butter. We had to get those items from the kitchen, and the busboy after we waited for 20 minutes and could not eat our salad unless we wanted to eat with our fingers.

Yes, I agree with you on that too. If the service sucks then they don't deserve any tips. Surprised

wow,I would probably tip $40. But then I wouldnt spend that much on my hair,I cant do highlights because I have greyish hair that grows super fast so I have to dye it myself every week. If you have bad service dont tip. I work for tips and it pisses me off when you give really good service and they thank you for the good service and dont leave anything! We have to pay taxes on our sales so if they dont tip us, it actually costs US money to wait on them. Remember TIP means "to insure promptness"; to some people Laughing Tipping is a city in China!

As far as I could remember is that you're supposed to tip 15% of what you paid.. Which is average I think. If you like her service then maybe more. It's all up to you.

If she's the owner, I wouldn't tip her. If she works for someone else, I would probably give her $200 even and call it a day. But then I really can't afford to pay $184 for hair services. When I went back to Thailand and paid $15 for a haircut by the best hairdresser in town, my mom said I had an expensive taste but low income. haha She would faint if she heard about a $60-$80 haircut here.

I'm glad I live in Australia where tipping is not obligatory as people get paid a decent wage.
I do still tip if the service has been very good.

Your tipping culture in the States is SO over the top IMO. Why should you tip your hairdresser when you're paying a small fortune from the beginning? It's not your "fault" she isn't getting properly paid for the job she's doing...

If salaries are so bad in service jobs (hair, food, cleaning etc) in the states that it's considered mandatory to tip 15% (OUTRAGEOUS, and I am not considered cheap) you guys need to get your acts together, get organized and get your salaries raised... (thoughts from socialistic Scandinavia Laughing )

I spent a week in NYC and was so sick and tired of all the tipping - I tip when service is ok/good and because I WANT to, not because the waitress or whatever is EXPECTING it...I couldn't care less if the waitress thinks I'm a biatch, her problem - not mine.

Some countries in Europe have service fees added on to the bill and is therefore mandatory, or they add on to the set price of the food or whatever so that a beer (fex) will cost 8 bucks instead of 7... But we tip anyway / as well - just not any mandatory 10-15%

Some places it's considered weird and rude to tip - like Japan...

edited to add: I've worked off and on as a waitress and bartender for years and LOVED my tips - but working with this gets really miserable if you are constantly hung up on the amount of tips you've gotten by the end of your shift...but then again - I've always been ok paid so wasn't dependent on tips to survive

I do tip for all of my spa services. But I have to add that I always see the same person and she does a wonderful job for me whatever the service happens to be.
