The (ahem) older members here will know that I am very cautious about acids due to an unfortunate experience with them. I have however been happily using 10% LA in the mornings before my vit C and Ystheal in the evenings.

I have had no irritation or peeling flakies etc. My skin is looking flipping amazing, so naturally I want to do more! Rolling Eyes

I have a sample of 40% LA and I am really tempted to try it, but am I likely to totally mess my skin up given the retinadehyde in the avene?

TIA Very Happy

Hi guapagirl - I hear what you're saying about acids. The older I get, it seems the less my skin really benefits from regular or too frequent use although I've never tried 10% LA, much less daily. Your success with it makes me want to experiment though!

However, a couple of years ago I used a 55% LA product fromwww.makeupartistschoice.com on occasion. This was during a period when I was using SkinCeuticals Retinol .5% which I eventually had to abandon -- I just can't tolerate retinol. I would use LA once in a while to get rid of the crusty skin caused by it. I couldn't do this very often though -- I'd eventually peel after a few days and my skin would feel sensitive for a while. This simply wasn't a suitable regimen for my skin.

I've since switched to Avene retinaldehyde products (started out with Ystheal Emulsion and now use Retrinal .1% which is twice as strong), and I'm very pleased to finally be able to tolerate and benefit from these gentle retinoids. I haven't needed to use LA since. Instead, I occasionally use PSF Pumpkin Enzyme Peel to get rid of any dry skin.

It's my guess based on personal experience that you could tolerate using 40% LA on occasion but not as a daily substitute for 10% LA.

Good luck!

I think (and I was intending) the 40%LA is used as a strong peel. My skin doesn't get any dry patches now, though when I first started with green cream 6 i did get them. I am loving the ystheal and the 10%LA, but I fancy doing a proper peel. I think I'll give it a go when I can get a weeks downtime in just in case. Don't want a repeat of my last escapade!

Where do you get the Retrinal .1%? I wouldn't mind stepping my retinol use up a notch at some point, but I've never seen Retrinal. Is it just in the US?

Thanks, Liz Cool

I used to get 60% and 70% glycolic peels once a month at my dermatologists and the whole time I was doing this I would use Differin. My derm never said anyting about a problem with using this and getting peels. I was only told to not use the Differin for a few days or so "after" getting the peel to give my skin a chance to heal. Once in a while I would get small areas of raw skin after the peels and sometimes some areas would frost and then scab over. I could never figure out why sometimes this happened and others it didn't since my routine was consistent. Maybe this had somthing to do with using Differin but maybe there is another explanation.

I would say to try something intermediate first. Perhaps 20% then maybe 30% then try the 40%. I really don't think that the 40% will be a problem but I like the gradual approach. Also, I would recommend covering any dry or tender areas with Aquaphor before doing the peel. I know that if I start doing peels again I will do this with the area at the base of my nose because for some reason that area was the one to always get the raw spots.

Lori, I know you'd show up and bring that up!

Theresa, I think I should be ok then. I know the lactic isn't anywhere near as strong as 60-70% GA and I had done 50% GA peels without any problems (until, as Loopy has reminded me I burnt my face off Rolling Eyes ), so maybe a short 40% followed by copper peptides and emu for a few days will be the way to go. I don't want to dilute because that is even more unpredictable I think, even though gradual is probably best. I would only use this as a very occasional treatment.

Lori, the 10% LA is fab! I particularly like it because you don't have to leave it sit for half an hour like the SA. My skin is actually looking really good at the moment (especially considering the huge booze intake lack of water and exercise Laughing ).

I leave it on for about 3-4 minutes and then rinse it off and apply my C serum. I'm thinking that I could possibly leave it on under the Cs erum, but it has a gel polymer type thing and I think it may stop the C serum penetrating.

Yup guapa - Retrinal is only sold in the US. But I wonder if there aren't any internet sellers who ship to the UK? Also, I think Ystheal comes in a couple of strengths -- I'm not sure but I think when I was using the Emulsion I noticed that an Ystheal Creme formula contained more retinaldehyde.

Hmmmm, maybe I will start using it more often then. I try for about twice a week, for about 5 minutes or whatever feels right. I really like the looks of my skin afterwards, but it dosen't last until my next peel.

I realise I am not Guapa but I am being her secretary as I am awake & she is probably tucked up in bed fast asleep. Working nights messes up my sleep pattern.

Anyway back to topic it's a professional solutions formula. She got it at dianayvonne.com.

hummmm well .... you know I said I'd mix some 40% and some 10% and build up? And ya know how I got a bit drunk on saturday night? Well sunday morning, I was a bit heavy with the 40%....

And I haven't burnt my face, but hell it is tight and rough! I suspect that a full 40% will entail serious peeling, so I am going to wait til I have more copper pep serum and also till I can avoid being seen my anyone for a few days!

My skin does not look good at the moment (think return of the mummy), But I think it will be ok. I have got some serious burn bits in my nose to mouth lines ... I'm hoping that it may pad 'em out a bit.

Will update later. Unless my face falls off.

Well my face is still here! Very Happy some rough skin still, but no sores and I seem to be flaking a bit but not so as anyone has noticed.

I'm not sure I can go for a full 40% peel though!

I use MUA's 40% lactic acid weekly for about 7-10 minutes. It has helped alot with my hyperpigmentation and oily skin.

It's OK. Normally she charges Wink

OK, my face is back to normal and looking fine. The only thing I get freaked out about is that my freckles seem to really peel a lot. They go very pale or even disappear for a while. Does this happen to other acid users? When I get a window on no going out in public for a week, I'll do a proper peel. I think I like this stuff! Very Happy
