Moosette--i know your scalp has calmed down now, but have you ever thought of henna? It kills everything bad (nits, dandruff) on your scalp and has great benefits from everything to glossy hair to a nice color to promoting hair growth. Of course, i think you would turn into a redhead from what i remember of your hair color from the pictures. If you want to keep your current color, i would try neutral henna (colorless).
For more information and tons of before and after pictures:

Hi catski!
Oh no, it was meant for everybody .
I have been henna-ing for 3 years and love it very much even though it's very messy and not as convenient as commercial dyes, i advocate henna for hair over chemical dyes any day.
If you try it, and have any questions, please do let me know.
It really is the best thing for your hair and scalp.
Kristen
p.s. this is actually me:

WOW skincareaddicted... your hair colour, and your hair, its so beautiful!!!It seems like there is alot of work involved to do a henna treatment. Is it complicated at all to use? Does it turn everyone's hair red, or a reddish tint? Please fill us in!!! |

how kind of you moosette .
It actually isn't all that hard actually. I don't do fancy things like adding essential oils or squeezing my own lemons anymore. I just buy the ready to use lemon or lime juice from the 99 cent store and I find I get the exact same results.
the color you get will depend almost entirely on your base hair color. Blondes will turn very red, lighter brunettes can get an auburn color, and really dark like mine will get an awesome red highlight in the sun, but appear about the same in the shade. Adding indigo powder to the henna (the same plant powder used to dye jeans) will give variations from black to a more dark auburn. I love this color that was achieved with henna plus indigo from Elektra
Here is another example:
blonde to red (Michelle A's mix):
There are so many more before and afters on the site, but for some reason, I wasn't able to post the pictures on here. I had 4 pictures set up too, they just came up as red x's. you can check them out here, scroll to the middle of the page and there's swatches of people's hennaed hair. http://www.hennaforhair.com/mixes/index.html
Moosette--I really hope you try the henna. I usually buy mine from indian/middle stores for about $2-3 a box, very cheap. The henna on the site is more expensive, but I still think it's worth it for healthy scalp and hair.

Kristen your hair is completely stunning!
Wow!
My hair is mid warm brown underneath ( uncoloured) and has blonde highlights on top.
I'd like to henna the brown layer a different colour than the blonde.. would it be impossible do you think? |

have you been to a dermatologist? you really might want to get a professional opinion esp given the bumps . . . |
I agree with sark, I'd go to a dermatologist. |

Hi catski,
You are so sweet!
I don't see why you couldn't henna that way. The hair underneath is undyed so should be A-OK. But please be careful when using henna and hair that is chemically dyed, sometimes it turns a green color and messes hair up because henna over chemicals is a bad combination.
Saying that, I have applied henna over chemically dyed hair on my mom, aunts, and friends with awesome results. I always make sure to do a strand test first though. (I think it's ok as long as it's not a "new" dye job).
Make sure to wrap up your blonde highlights to prevent them from turning red too. Maybe one of those highlight caps would help?
I am guessing your results would be beautiful. A friend of mine just recently dyed her hair red and got blonde streaks. I think it looks great!
I am thinking your results will be the opposite of Teemu's who used henna to streak her hair:

for some reason, the picture won't show up, so scroll down if you use that link, it is the second hair picture .

I love henna!
Am originally from India and I cart back tons of boxes every year. I mix mine with yogurt, lemon juice, and a some strong black tea (to avoid getting the overly brassy highlights). And now, thanks to you gals, I have started adding a spoonful of seakelp bioferment to this mixture |

Thanks for the encouragement Kristen. I love a creative project, so I'm going to read the henna site in depth and be brave and try a New Hair Thing!! |

I get bumps on my head after every visit to the salon for my hair color. I have tons of grey hair so I go every month...usually right when they are healing I'm due for another dye job. I have noticed that there are certain shampoos that I can NOT use or it makes it much worse. Pureology is on that list. Within a day of using any of those products my head is a mess.
I just went this past weekend to get my hair dyed and my stylist used Pureology on my hair (shampoo/cond/products)....she told me as I was leaving and I was not able to wash my hair until late that night. Needless to say I had bumps like crazy. Well I had purchased Ojon Rejuv Conditoner and have used it a couple of times since and my bumps were gone in 1 day. Normally they take about 2 weeks. I am not crazy about the results on my hair but my scalp feels fantastic. It may be worth a look. The small jar is $20 and a little goes a long way. I have slept in it 2 times now.
Good luck.
I think it is always a good idea to see a derm if you are not sure. |
