I think artecol is the kind used in Europe, in the us its called artefill I think. It just is now being offered although used in Europe for over 10 yrs.You need to go to a very experienced injector or you could suffer permanent damage. Some people go to TJ where there are very experienced injectors down there,or you may contact a dr. here who was invloved in clinical trials who has the esperience. Its expensive 1500 pr vial, but hopefully permanent.

I've had many conversations with my derm about Artecoll. (It is called Artefill in the US as it was approved for use in the US recently) I live in Canada and it's been used here (and Europe) for years and years.

Everything you've read about Artecoll applies to Artefill. The ingredients are the same; collagen, PMMA and lidocaine.

It is considered permanent. It typically lasts 5/10 years but the filler material (polymethylmethacrylate) is there forever. What happens when it is injected is: Collagen immediately plumps the area, and as the collagen is metabolized, your body is forming a pseudo-scar tissue around this material (PMMA), thus raising/filling whatever you need raised/filled. They say this in a different way on their website:
http://www.artefill.com/consumer/id=4/faq_category.html
There is a gap where it looks like there is some loss of correction while this process is happening. It takes about 3 or 4 months to finally settle in.

As gung-ho as I usually am about fillers (I had acne scarring) I chose not to go ahead and get this one. It just makes me nervous. My derm said that out of the over 3000 people he's injected 4 people had problems with it because YEARS after injection they suddenly had a reaction to it and it needed to be surgically exised.

I told the derm; "Out of such a huge number of people treated and only a few having a reaction is definitely a good thing. But, if you told me that if I were to go to the mall tomorrow and out of the 3000 that went there 4 would be killed, would I still go? No, I wouldn't. I know it's not the same thing, but you get my point.

Don't get me wrong, I practically jumped on the chair and strapped myself in when I had laser resurfacing. (Something which obviously can have some permanent side effects.)
I just think the idea of injecting this material into my face...I would be using it for acne scarring. If a problem came up, I'd be trading one scar for another and I don't want to.

Hope this helps. I've had almost every filler and some other minor procedures. (mostly lasers/acids)If you have any other questions just ask. Smile I'm sure I'm forgetting some info but it will come to me later.
