I know most lotions can be kept up to 3 years. How about purfume? How can we know if it's bad?

I find that perfumed lotions don't even last 3 yrs- to me they get a wierd plasticy smell. I have had a chanel perfume for about 6 yrs now and it still smells great. But I have had cheaper perfumes that only last about 2-3 yrs.
Usually you can see a color change and a definate smell change.

Found this for you at http://www.joseibi.com/store/view_article.asp?idArticle=38

"Perfume and fragrances -- 1 year
Even if you use them once a week and keep them in a cool, dark place, the scent or fragrance will only stay intact for a year. To keep the fragrance from changing before the toss date, keep the perfume inside its own original box in a cool, dark place. "

It listed other shelf lives of cosmetics also -- I will update the prior thread I started with the full list. Here's the link:

I've heard one year after opening for perfumes. BUT, I have a bottle of Givenchy that I've had open two years and it still smells the same. I'm not even halfway through it (It's Very Irrestible, and I only use it once a week, if that-- it's very heady and not appropriate for everyday).

And I'm not throwing it away! In the summer I actually pack it away in my panty drawer because it's not a summer fragrance. Maybe that will help it keep longer, being in a dark, cooler place.

I have a bottle of Coolwater Woman Rolling Eyes from 8th grade! It's 10 years old and still smells fairly strong. Isn't there a lot of alcohol in perfume?

I think it depends on where you keep it. They last longer kept out of sunlight and in not too hot a temperature.

I typically open no more than 2 bottles at once, so going through my perfume within a year is usually not a problem.

I have several bottles are more than five years old, they still smell good. As long as they still smell good, and no discoloration in the perfume, I won't throw them away.
