I'm not Asian but we have many Asian students here and I've had to counsel quite a few of them when they fail a uni course and basically are incredibly afraid of telling their parents. So, in some cases this is probably a very realistic scenario but I don't find it funny because I see the other side where the students sit in my office in tears telling me what their parents will do to them (or rather, what they think they will do). Having said that, I think it also applies to other cultures - it simply depends on the parents' expectations.

Gracedhy, I feel for you!

Mabsy, I hope you are able to help these kids get into a better situation... A few comments here describe parents hitting their kids when the grades aren't good enough... Well, many people would call that abuse, perhaps, at best, a relatively mild form, but it's not good and it may indicate worse conditions. I was raised in very rotten circumstances but at the time many people just wrote off my situation because they just dismissed it as part of the classic stereotype that Asian parents are hard on their kids. Now I wish someone would have helped me by calling social services or offering a way to communicate with my parents without fear... Better yet, I wish more countries could follow Sweden's example of outlawing violence against children (yup, it's illegal to hit children there... just like it's illegal to hit adults! Crazy, huh?) and creating mandatory parenting classes in high schools.

I do find the video interesting and, whatever the intention, I'm glad people are able to bring this issue to light through comedy, just as long as the stereotype doesn't speak louder than individuals!

I can definitely relate to this. I believe a lot of asian/Chinese parents value the power of education and hoping they can provide the best guidance to their kids so when they growup they can lead a easeir or better life than themselves did. Just like my parents, many of them giving up everything that they used to have in thier own homecountry and made sacrifices to bring their family to a new country. Many of them may have language or other barrier yet they work hard and they want to pass the same work ethics to the next generation. I don't think its funny and I believe once the kid grow older he can appreciate what his parents did for him a bit more.

yeah, they believe that by education, life would be a lot more easier...but sometimes thats not the case cos some kids are just not made for studying, so why force them into studying when they could do something they enjoy and make money too...therefore improving their standard of life. with the older generation, they move to a foreign country, not knowing a word of english/or whatever language is spoken in that country, and that just makes them want their kids to know more and succeed. i do agree with u iaimei, that ppl will appreciate what their parents did for them when they get older

The clip is pretty funny, that is if you can see the humor in it. I'm Chinese as well and i can definitely relate to it. My parents were never that hard on me but i knew they expected nothing less than A's. I've seen a lot of Chinese-American parents here in the U.S. (esp. in cities populated with predominantly Chinese immigrants) who have extremely high hopes for their kids not only academically, but also to excel in extra-curricular activities like playing musical instruments, ballet dancing, painting, karate, etc.. Sadly but true, you can always tell these kids didn't really have a choice in picking what interested them, but were often forced to participate in activities that their parents wanted them to. Crying or Very sad

I can relate to that video.

I am Asian-American and grew up in a very strict, traditional home where education was the top priority. My parents set very high standards for my brother and I. While I feel like I missed out on a lot of fun, I am now thankful for the opportunities that have resulted from all that hard work!

Oh, and btw, I don't think the video's funny, but I'm sure the kids had a blast making it!

I'm not asian, but dated someone who was for quite a long time. He would have thought the following:

1. It was disrespectful to ones elders.
2. It was over the top.

Now watch this.
