Serendipity, thanks for the footshopping tip. I have quite a few pairs of Birkenstocks (maybe 20) and I'm always on the prowl for a good source! |

Hi, my name is Bee, and I am a recovering Birkenstock addict. . .
I grew up in Oregon, where, like Colorado, you were not allowed to reside unless you owned at least two pair of Birkenstocks -- a "dress" pair for formal events, and a "hammered" pair to wear at outdoor Dead shows. (Now, many years later, I live in South Florida, where you are swiftly escorted to the border if caught with Birks on.)
I always exclusively wore Birkenstocks back when I was younger, as it was an integral part of the wanna-be-hippie uniform. Plus, even though I have huge wide feet and they looked terrible on me, I was so cute in my 20's that the Birks didn't really interfere with my ability to get laid .
Well, as I got a little older, I found myself doing things like buying make-up, and bras. . .stuff like that. One day, I looked down at my boats and realized something must be done. But I wanted to stay comfortable and keep the granola style going. What was I to do??
One day I found my answer:
Romika brand, 'Marylin' style sandal. The upper looks like the Birkenstock 'Florida,' but the sole was not that cork 'vague outline of a foot.' They made my feet look two sizes smaller. Plus, they were way more comfortable!. My Romikas lasted for years, but after going through two pairs (and nearing age 40), I realized it was once again time for some more upgrading. So, I bought more make-up, and some 'specially engineered' bras, and went out in search of some more feminine sandals.
These days I am crazy about my Clarks 'Anita' flat sandals. They are cute, tough, comfortable, and Miami approved. (Plus, I got them at Famous Footwear for only $45 ).
Anyway, enough of my silly story. I just wanted to say that I think anyone who likes Birkenstocks might like some of these brands too (and find them more comfortable and easier to wear).
Romika and Clarks are the two brands I know and like the best. The type of Romika's I had were soooo comfy! Plus the insoles were removable, so you could replace them when they wore down (even put orthotics in). I really like my Clarks now, because all you really need in Florida is one pair of flat sandals that you can dress up or down, and they are really indestructible. Plus I think that they are kind of hippie-girlie. I wear them every day.
Check out walkingonacloud.com. They are a Canadian site, and the prices are not the cheapest, but they have the most complete selection of high quality, good for your feet sandals. I've been looking at the Naoc brand and they look really good, but I won't need any new sandals for a while.
Anyway, I'm hear to tell you that you can kick the Birkenstock habit, and when you do -- trust me -- your husbands will thank you for it!

Thanks for the advice, Bee, on alternatives! My family rolls their eyes at my Birkies. I just bought a white pair from QVC that will be my summer staple! Oh,and I love my orange Crocs flipflops!
A friend of mine got married in silver Birkies with rhinestones...with her formal wedding gown! |

My husband, on the other hand, LOVES the look of me in Birkenstocks. He much prefers to see me in my Birkenstock Gizehs than my Christian Lacroix slingbacks. (But I love both equally!) |

You probably have lovely feet, Shanno (or a husband with a ponytail ). I have Shrek feet. My husband had a ponytail back when I 'got with him,' and always liked my 'Earth Mother' ways. A few years later, however, it became clear that (although he loves me dearly), he really likes stripper shoes on a woman. Oh, and thongs (but not the kind you put on your feet )

Oh, I Love her! Formal Birks -- what a rebel!
You know, I miss the old days, when my biggest expenses were a new pair of Birks and a quarter-ounce. These days I am saving up for a boob-lift (guess I shoulda worn a bra more often! )

I have a pair of taupe suede Berk "Gizah" (hope I spelled it right) sandals and I have actually had strangers comment on how pretty they are!
I'm so happy that the weather is getting warmer because I'll be able to wear them again ... |

I love my Birkenstocks. My theory about them is "if everyone started wearing them at an early age the words BACK PROBLEMS would be nonexistant". |

Cathy_Jean, the Gizehs are great, aren't they? Have you tried the Spartas? I snarfed up three pairs last year at Zappos. They are these lovely metallics--bronze, copper, and silver. They look fantastic and are almost ast comfortable as my trusty Gizehs.
Bee, your post made me chuckle! I'm not so sure about lovely feet, but mine are pretty small (size 4.5/5) so husband thinks they're cute. |

I'm going to have to check out the Spartas!
(One thing about these is that for me, the sizing is very strange. I normally wear a size 5-1/2 or 6 but in Birkenstocks I take a size 35 or L4. If I move up to a larger size, the molded footbed feels very uncomfortable under my foot. I just mention this because if anyone reading this is tempted to buy some online, it might be worth their while to go to a Birkenstock store and check the fit there.) |

Since my foot surgery Oct. 06 I have not been able to wear anything but running shoes if on my feet for long.
Several weeks ago I purchased a pair of Birkenstock's Florida. This particular pair have the soft foot bed. My feet absolutely LOVE these sandals. I actually feel more arch support in these Birks than $100.00 running shoes. My foot surgeon told me that Birks have an idea orthodic.
I wish Birkenstock had more attractive clogs for the winter. I have "big" feet, size 9. Clogs draw too much attention to them. BTW: I had a size 7.5 when I got married. After babies and years on my feet they grew. Beware ladies. |

I have a pair of silver Gizeh style which I love (am wearing them now). It is sort of a flip flop style not clunky looking at all. My dd bought a Camo print pair that are not too small for her but they seem to be discontinued. I wish I could find these again. |
