I received this email this morning and wanted to share....
This is an amazing video....The beginning has no sound but music comes on a minute into it.
Did you hear about the horses that were trapped for 3 days on a tiny piece of land in wind and rain in the ? Apparently it had the nation mesmerized, watching over a 100 horses huddle against the wind and having to watch 18 of them die. First firemen, then the Dutch army, tried to rescue them - both unsuccessfully. So four women on horseback rode out to the rescue. Here's a video of it. Awesome.

This has got to be one of the most amazing, beautiful videos I've seen in a long time-the music was also effective; I was tearing (o.k. blubbering like a baby ) & jumping up & down with joy at the same time. Thanks so much-you made my day |

WOW!! What an emotional video! Leave to the women to have the 'get it done' mentality to go bring so many back to safety. |

Thanks for sharing that. I kid you not, goosebumps and tears flowing down my cheeks landing on my keyboard. I will show this to my HB tonight, we read the story in the newspaper and I am sure he will enjoy the video. |

Takes a few women to sort out the firemen and army! Why didn't they just ask women in the first place! |

Thanks so much for this link. I remember when it happened: we read in the newspapers that it had been resolved, but that's not the same as seeing the film. Very moving. |

Funny, I watched the Freestyle Competition video (recent url posted) first without sound and thought it was just weird. (Full disclosure: I do not get dresage, at all.) "Let the horse GALLOP!" I thought. It made more sense -- although I still think we humans are so damm weird to come up with this "sport" -- with the music. Which I listened to the second time around.
Here, however, is the winner of that competition.

If it doesn't come up, search "Anky" at youtube.
This horse does not look so "reined in" and controlled. I found it easier to watch.
Also interesting to note that the horse doesn't actually step to the music. The music is chosen and recorded to fit the horse's gaits.
I guess it's easier to create music than teach a horse to dance.
Final note: My cat, Scootz, was sleeping beside me as I watched these. WIth the winner, he looked up at the monitor, then watched, mesmerized.
Scootz: "Oh My Gad. I cannut bhuleeve what that horse is willing to do for a little more tuna." |

Sidda, the horse is actually performing movements (to make it easier lets call them dance steps) to music rather than just running at different speeds (gait) to it and yes riders do select music that suits the movements they (horse/rider) are performing not unlike sports such as figure skating. The combination made one mistake which probably cost them the title and judging by the number of views and comments this video has received on Youtube it has captured alot of attention and much praise. I dont compete in dressage but this video still leaves me speechless. The first video link is inspiring and as Cescue wrote very moving.
PS There are alot of sports I dont "get" too! |

Oh, I know that. I watched it again with the music and the commentary. The commentary on the winner mentioned that THAT rider had music especially composed to fit her horse's gait. She even sang on the soundtrack, herself.
I loved the spirit of the first horse more, I must say. But I found the tight reins and whipping tail to be unsettling. It was very interesting to me to see the winner -- and rider -- appear so much more relaxed. Older and more experienced together, I assume.
And sure, my favorite of all the horses was the colt in the first video who nearly went under in the final steps, then found her hoof on solid ground, then dry land. |
