My parents are from Poland and named me Wanda (pronounced VAHN-dah). In my family when Polish is being used, I am called Wandzia (pronounced VAHN-jah). (Otherwise I am called Wendy.) I have a baby brother 27 years younger than me from my father's second marriage. When he was two he one day called me Vava (which we would spell Wawa). I had earlier read several books about Isabelle Eberhardt, a minor, obscure historical figure who briefly fascinated and obsessed me (I later named my firsy cat Isabelle), and she was born in Russia and had three siblings, including a brother (probably Vassily) whom she called Vava. So when my brother called me that, I seized on it and encouraged its further use. I loved being called Vava! So that's where it came from.
