HI Everyone:
I recently tried MAC Cleanse Off Oil and it left my face a complete mess. I was rather surprised because I haven't heard one negative thing about MAC's Cleanse Off. It left me seriously dehydrated, peely, and bumpy. I really wanted to try an oil cleanser because it's so good at removing makeup (and MAC's Cleanse Off did do this successfully) but I don't want to deal with the other craziness that came along with it.
I have also heard great things about Alpha Hydrox Cleanser. I have highly sensitive, oily, but dehydrated skin. My cheeks get really dry and flakey if I don't put lotion on but I do need to blot once in the afternoon and once late at night (if I haven't washed my face by 8PM). I also suffer from mild acne. I currently use Marecelle (Canadian brand) Gentle Foaming Cleanser; I've used this cleanser for 10 years now and it's been ok (obviously, or I wouldn't use it for 10 years) but a lot of the reason is because I'm scared to try anything else. When I finally took the plunge with MAC Cleanse Off, my face became a nightmare.
Would Alpha Hydrox Cleanser be a good option? If it's not, can anyone suggest a better option? Although I've heard great things about several "organic / natural" skincare lines, I'm a little reluctant to try anything that has too many herbal or essential oils because they can also be irritating on highly sensitive skin like mine. I'm also allergic to most chemical sunscreens and perfumes. Phew~anyone? |

Hi LL - I received the Alpha Hydrox Cleanser as a freebie with a drugstore.com order. It contains glycolic acid. While I wouldn't use this regularly because it would be too drying for me, it's not bad for the occasional times when my pores are clogged. Since I'm 55, I've backed away from using leave-on AHA products, so at least a cleanser gets washed off immediately but still offers some benefit. But when I was younger, glycolic acid products really helped my skin by exfoliating the dry, crusty layer and clearing up any acne. I just can't use glycolics too often now that I'm older.
I'm not in a position to recommend any special alternative, as I use and really like Cetaphil (the regular formula in winter and the one for normal to oily skin the rest of the year)! I wear makeup and oily SS, yet even when I've used a non-alcohol toner after cleansing, I've seen no residue on the cotton ball which confirms to me that Cetaphil is doing the job.
I agree with you about products that contain a lot of botanicals, etc., since these can irritate sensitive skin. Alpha Hydrox is relatively inexpensive -- why not just give it a try a couple of days a week to start out, since cleansing oil made a mess of your skin? |

LL,
I use this every other day and am very happy with it. Make sure you try the newest cleanser. It comes in a large clear tube and you can see some microbeads in it. I tend to get some thicker patches of skin next to my nose on my cheeks and this worked wonders in keeping those patches away. On the other days I use NIA 24 physical scrub. By the way, the AH has a ph of 5.5 which is nice.
