Hi Everyone
Ever since reading Dr. Huber's information about acids, I have halted using Retin-A, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), and Glycolics since 2 weeks ago. I don't know if you consider retinol to be an acid but I use the Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle Skin Cream with Retinol at night and use Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum in the morning below my sunscreen.
I see that my skin is not as dry and crinkly anymore and I haven't seen anything deteriorating (wrinkles) yet. Everyday I want to reach for my Retin-A but I keep telling myself to wait another week or two. Maybe I was addicted !
Ladies and Gents, give me some hope. Let me know how you are faring off the acids. |

I had to stop because my skin was getting really dehydrated. So far, my skin is looking better than when I was using tons of acids. Calmer and less flakey, ironically. |

Hi Librarygirl
I would consider Retinol an acid so you're totally cheating
I've already documented the state of my skin without all those things; in summary slightly rougher surface, a bit more wrinkly but extremely calm and comfortable.
Just to add since I started using the same topicals daily and nightly I am experiencing a bit of smoothing and wrinkle lifting. So I really don't buy the only 2 days a week part of the Huber regime. |

Molly,
Yikes. I am cheating. I'm waiting for my Olay Regenerist to arrive in the mail from an MUA swapper. That way, I'll use Olay instead of Neutrogena Anti-Wrinkle at night.
Do you think you will go back to the acids? |

Can someone point me to the source of this info? Where do I read about this?
I've recently (3 days ago) stopped using ALL my topicals , because they were mostly acidic (Vit. C serum, HA serum, Retin A, DMAE, BHA's . . .). I've done that on the suggestion of James B. of AdvanThera (they make and sell Quasar and Baby Quasar). Namely, I have acne prone skin and have been using Baby Quasar for over 4 weeks now with the sole purpose (at this stage, anyway) to get rid of my acne. Since I started with the BQ - my acne got worse, so James said to stop using all my topicals for a week because acids are supposedly not good for acne-prone skin (??!! not sure where he is getting this from ??!!). At this point I am quite desperate (I'm 41 and covered in acne ), so I agreed to take a week-long break from all my topicals while continuing with a daily light therapy.
I'd like to read more about all this stuff.
Thanks, Rubby |

Hi,
I tried to post the link to a thread about Dr. Huber and his views, but since I'm so new it won't let me. But if you do a search by putting the words "Dr. Huber" and "acids" into the search box, then make sure you choose the option to search for "all terms" you will find the thread. The thread title is something about 302 skincare and using 2-3 cleansers and moisturizers. Within that thread there is a post by 302 - that is Dr. Huber.
LOL - by the time I get this posted someone will have been able to link you directly to the thread! |

By acids do you lot mean the pH or the fact it maybe derived from acid or have it in its name?
my HA may be CALLED hyaluronic acid, but it is pretty much pH neutral and my ystheal is also pretty pH neutral too. |

I myself tried the acid-free way. I use Mama Lotion, which is 20% acid (mandelic and malic?), something like that. I decided to stop because I was afraid that later on in life, it may wear my skin thin? Wanted to go a more gentle route at any rate. Stopped using the Mama Lotion, and my face was crystal clear for about a week.......then WHAMMO!!! Cystic acne city! ACK!!! I had about 11 huge cysts. I went back to using the Mama lotion, and within 2 days, my skin is completely clear again.
I guess I'm hooked. It has never irritated me or dried my skin out though, hopefully a good sign. If anything, my skin seems happier and more moisturized when I use it. Keeping my fingers crossed about the future though..... |

Yes, I think I'll be returning to the L-ascorbic regularly and a gentle resurfacing AHA occasionally, but not a high percentage, regular usage, damage-repair, collagen stimulating one. I just don't believe my skin type appreciates that level of stripping of the corneal layer. I was always afraid I was going to turn into my mother; she's got majorly leathery skin, but it turns out, although my face follows her wrinkle pattern, I'm now observing my father's face more closely and seeing a lot of similarities with the easy tan, thin pigmented skin. On the other hand I do think my skin is superior in terms of surface texture to the majority of my peer group so I'll use it but less so.
But not yet. I'm enjoying seeing what works and doesn't work (without the acids you can really see what you are getting results from).
Guapa - we do mean exfoliating acids, PH not name. I agree the retinaldehyde appears to be non-acidic, but I'm off the retinoids too.
I can never understand why HA is called an acid anyhow.
ALA hardly seems acidic either, though I read it is slightly, but diluted in oil it's pretty neutral. |
