I don't know why but my skin around the neck and shoulder area keeps itching. I scratched until I scarred myself. I saw a dermatologist, and he gave me some strong steroidal cream for it. But I don't want to keep using this as it thins out my skin. Any other options out there? Help please...pretty desperate. TIA. |

I went through that recently and what helped was slapping honey on the itchy areas (honey seems to be a staple on my bathroom shelf these days; it seems to be helping with every skin problem I've had). I didn't care that it was kind of sticky, what mattered was that I itched no more.
Maybe it would help you, too? HTH some. |

bkkgirl, I get itchy on the back of my neck when I use anything but the simplest of hair products.
Even organic hair conditioners make my neck itch.
Do you still get an itchy neck if you tie your hair up? |

Do you wear anything around that area which feels hasky and rough, and which might be causing irritation? I know I often have to cut labels out of my clothes for this reason. Also, are you using any new washing detergent as that could be causing the problem?
But catski may well be correct with her suggestion about hair products.
If I were you, I'd definitely work on finding the culprit rather than just using something to soothe the area. |

I think this problem might have started when I bought a cheapo necklace which I loved the design and was wearing it constantly both in and out of shower. However, I since took it off (and shed some tears for not wearing it any more...but I got over it now...hehe), and it's been many months, and the itchiness keeps coming back. It goes away if I use the steroid, but I don't want to keep on using it.
I was wondering about the shampoo, too. I have to see if I put my hair up, will the itchiness stay on?
I see my boyfriend scratch his neck a lot, too. I wonder if I caught it from him. So we look like a pair of monkeys when we're together. |

The problem with steriod creams, even the low potency drugstore kind is that your skin deveops a tolerance and when you stop or even cut down the usage, the original problem comes back, sometimes worse than before. You must slowly wean yourself off them, if you use it 3 times a day, try 2 for a week, then go to once a day. Also the honey is an excellent idea, try mixing it with a little extra virgin olive oil, this works wonders. Now for my rashes etc I use this mixture or try Bonds medicated powder. |

You might want to try a calendula cream or oil or even rosehip oil as they are often recommended to people who suffer from psoriasis, or eczema and other skin disorders and irritations. Weleda makes a great and affordable calendula cream and so does Jurlique which is a little more pricey. |

Are you using any product on your neck? I get the itchys from using glycolic products on my neck but can use them fine on my face.
Also if you can get hold of Elemis products they do an amazing SOS cream which will take away the itch. Stop taking steroid cream, it only works whilst you're using it. |

Hello all, no, I am not using any product on my neck. The area where it itches is at the base of my neck where the choke necklace would lie, on my shoulders, and behind my left ear which is close to where I have my mole. I have my doctor look at the mole already to see if it's cancerous, and he said it's not.
I will try the different methods you all suggested. Thank you.
PS: Does lavendar EO work on skin problem? |

The neck seems to be a very sensitive area for most people. I've had success with shea butter; that seems to help it.
Also read somewhere it could be a perimenopausal symptom. |

If you've been wearing inexpensive jewelry you could be reacting to the metal used which is frequently nickel. Stop wearing the necklace and see what happens. |

I stopped wearing it for months now, but the itchiness stays on. |

bkkgirl, have you tried liquid oat beta glucans? If you have some handy give it a try for a day or so. |

I wish I knew where to buy the liquid oat beta glucans. Can you direct me to where I can find this? Thanks in advance, Salli. You've been so helpful. |

Garden of Wisdom has the liquid oat beta glucans, but I think you need to go back to the doctor personally. Maybe some neosporin in the meantime so that it doesn't get infected. |

Salli, thank you! I see they got 2 sizes available in 2 oz or 8 oz. Do you use a lot? I was just wondering if I should first try 2 oz or go ahead and get the 8 oz since it seems so difficult to come by this product. But if 2 oz will last a long time, I don't want to buy too big a size that will sit there and go bad before I get to finish it up. |

From what I understand it has a shelf life of about 18 months if it isn't contaminated (dirty fingers and such). Personally, I would try the 2 oz and see if you like it. From looking at your pics though I would go to the dr. again. Definitely put some kind of antibiotic cream on those spots. |
